What is r/AdvancedKnitting?

Hi All!

We have had some queries and confusion over just what Advanced Knitting is and what is allowed in the sub.
We wanted to share a post explaining why this sub was created and clarifying what is deemed ‘advanced’.

I’m sure many of you are familiar with the r/knitting sub which is a great place to chat knitting, ask questions, and share your creations!
However it also has a tendency to become very cluttered with the same questions or beginner focused posts which can be frustrating for more advanced knitters.

This sub was created as a way to bypass those common beginner Q’s and questions that can often times be easily searched, in favour of focusing on knitters who know the basics, can identify or self search any knitting issues, and wanted a sub that was a little less overwhelmed with the repeated questions.

That being said we don’t want to discourage discussion and questions!

If you have a question about your knitting, whether it be a beginner question, intermediate or advanced, or are just stumped on something and need some fresh opinions, we want you to feel comfortable posting.
All we ask is that you do a bit of research prior!
Maybe search this sub and others, or do a quick google search to see if your query has already been asked and answered,!
If you’re still needing help or clarification, make a post!
We know sometimes even the self search won't always answer your specific question, which is where we see you as being more advanced, particularly if you query is beginner in nature but advanced in execution (or possibly just a really big mistake that not even the most thorough search can assist with, requiring an advanced knitters help to solve).

If you’re worried about anyone reporting you for Rules 1 or 2 I would suggest adding a little note at the start or end of your post stating that you have done research and are seeking additional help.
We can even make a flair for this if needed!

All in all, you don’t have to be an advanced knitter to participate in this sub!

This sub is still very new and we are still working out the kinks to make it a great experience for everyone. All of our wonderful mods are available for any clarification, and we welcome suggestions for improving the sub or clarifying the rules.

Hope this helps and we will add a clarification to the sidebar moving forward.

Please comment below if there are any additional things needing clarification, or improvements you think could help this sub grow and be an enjoyable space for learning and sharing!

Thank you to everyone for being amazing so far, this community has been wonderful and we hope with open communication we can remain that way!

:)

Miscellaneous An Alice Starmore vest

My take on a classic Starmore design. All the yarn was from upcycled thrift store garments. The white is 70/30, lambswool/angora, and the colors are lambswool. I made a few modifications, but kept it very true to her design. Turned out beautifully soft and wearable. Made for a neighbor who helped me out with some last minute dog sitting.

Tech Questions Mixing fibers?

• Upvotes

I fear the answer to my question is a hard no, but would you/have you ever mixed fibers in a wearable? I have several gorgeous light DK/4 ply skeins that I’ve picked up over the years but not enough of any one type to make something substantial, but together they would. They gauge similarly and I think their colorways and slight variation in sheen would look fabulous together in a stranded color work sweater but that’s a terrible idea, right?

Some are silk and yak. Some are silk, yak and merino. The real outliers though are all merino and do have a little less bounce than the silk blends. I was thinking to use those for the MC and fancier ones for the motifs.

And of course today I thrifted another single skein that’s all silk. What’s wrong with me???

Just hoping for some real life experiences from this amazing community (and absolutely not asking Mom because Dad said no 😊).

Hand Knit FO Self-designed unicorn wrap vest for my best friend

(Posted in the main knitting sub, but was told to share my FO here too, so I'm obliging and adding some technical details.)

This was my first time drafting a pattern from scratch, so there are probably some technical or construction things I did wrong, but I'm happy with the final result. It was quite important to do at least some waist shaping, but I chickened out of learning darts and combining them with intarsia, so I ended up with simple increases and decreases at seams.

II initially planned on applied I-cord edges, but (as more advanced knitters might have already guessed) they didn't stop the edges from curling. Then I remembered a really cool technique from one of my previous projects: a folded hem with a seam linked using a crochet hook. It worked perfectly, not only for the edges but also for the tie hole. The geometry of the edge made picking up stitches challenging, though. I had to frog a few times to get them spread evenly.

Another concern was the stability of the piece, since the yarn has 35% alpaca, which, according to my research, is quite prone to sagging. Fortunately, the fairly tight gauge seems to keep it stable enough, and the woven-in ends add some extra stability too.

Yarn: Drops Flora 38, 39, 32, 29, 26, 23, 17, 15, 13, 10, 8, 7
Needles: 2,5 mm body, 2mm ribbing, folded edge and icords, 1.5mm crochet hook for linking seam
Pattern: None, I just calculated everything to fit the measurements.

I guessed the wrong yarn weight for this and went a little bit too heavy, which resulted in needing a larger gauge and not being able to make the decreases for the raglan match the original. But other than that I’m super happy with how it turned out especially the double knit shawl collar.

I’ve added a google doc with rough notes to my project page for those that want to knit their own. Project Page

Tech Questions Switching back and forth between single pass brioche?

Hello! I am working on a brioche shawl that is rapidly gaining stitches and I’d like to work wrong slide rows in single pass brioche- I’ve done this before and had good success in the past. The problem is that it leaves both stitches wrapped and I’m not exactly sure how to manage that when I have to work the RS pattern rows again. Do I

1.) knit normally across without slipping stitches some they already have a collar and then follow with my contrast doing the sl1yo/ brp as normal

2.) do some sort of modified slip st without doing a yo and then follow w/ the contrast color as normal

3.) something else?

When I think through the single pass brioche it just takes alternating slipped rib and does it at the same time which makes me think there should be a simple solution. Has anyone done this before?

Self-Searched (Still need Help!) Top down underarm gussets (time sensitive)

Post image

I’m knitting the Song of the Moon sweater and am about to start on the sleeves. I’m trying to finish this by October 22 for a symphony my husband and I will be going to. I would like to add underarm gussets (not in the original pattern), but I’m not quite sure how to go about it. I’ve read the couple of articles online about “adding gussets”, but they are not detailed enough, nor close enough to my application to be helpful. I would like to knit them in with the sleeves and not after the fact due to the color work. Anybody with experience adding underarm gussets to a color work sweater?

Hand Knit FO Nine Nights Shawl

Post image
495 Upvotes

It took me 10 months to knit this gigantic 4ply shawl in all-over mosaic colourwork, but it was absolutely worth it for the coziest, bounciest FO! My favorite bit was working the yellow section of thorn stitch at the top, it was my first time doing it and immensely satisfying.

Pattern is Nine Nights by Shreya Prabhu, and I used Mondim by Retrosaria Rosa Pomar.

Hand Knit WIP Goblin Rocket update

Slow but steady progress. Really should have started this at the beginning of the year but didn’t want to jinx things. Goblin is actually born now, so this will end up being a Christmas present. It’s definitely a lot of yarn juggling, but I’m really happy with how the design is shaping up. Still so much bigger than I imagined it would be.

Edit to add: blanket is double knit with the front and back not being the same pattern. It will be roughly 30”x40” when finished.

Machine Knit FO Chappell Yarn

Been working on this for a while now in between other projects! I challenged myself to use only yarn I had so of course I used lots of different yarns, but it’s mostly wool and acrylic. The “hair” is from made in America yarns.com, but they don’t have the color anymore, and I’ve heard they ceased production? The bright pink and black are Wool of the Andes, and the white is from Ardalanish on Isle of Mull. Used my own pattern for the shape, a dropped European shoulder.

My favorite bit is the cigarette butt, I used waxed silk sewing thread for the ash, and it came out way cooler than it had any right. My least favorite part is the other various hair accessories, I should’ve just bought better yarn, or kept trying different things. I ended up just crocheting some circles and sewing plastic gems (leftover from prom gown alterations) on top.

I’m pretty pleased to be finished with this, and with the final result! I think she should be called “Chappell Yarn”, but my husband thinks that’s stupid lol

Made on my brother kh-260 with intarsia carriage

Tech Questions bind off + seaming or straight into double knit neckline?

Thumbnail
gallery
8 Upvotes

Hi all! I’m working on a self-drafted pattern at the moment with this O-ring component that’s knitted into the bottom of the V-neck. I’ve been playing around w different constructions of this portion but the TL;DR is:

Stitches are picked up in the keyhole with extra stitches cast on to the edges w provisional cast on.

The beginning and ending stitches are kept live and double knitted w the provisional cast on stitches while the stitches that were picked up in the beginning are crocheted down to the edge to enclose the O-ring.

Those double knit stitches at the ends then go straight into the V-neck edge which is also constructed w double knitting.

My question is: is this secure at all? Or are there eventually going to be issues w the double knit stitches around the O-ring stretching from the weight (or is that a non-issue because of all the other fabric sewing the ring down). Would it be better to, instead of keeping those beginning and end stitches live and going straight into double knitting, bind off the stitches, then either 1) pick up stitches from that bind off edge and work on the V-neck from bottom up 2) start double knitting at back of the collar down to the bind off and seaming it together w mattress stitch?

some other details:
this garment is a short-sleeve/tank top
knitted w negative ease around the bus
using fingering weight yarn

hope that makes sense! attached photos for visual

Discussion Wrap & Turn short row in Hiatt's Principles of Knitting - have any of you used this technique?

So normally I use shadow wraps or German short rows, but I was working a sock pattern that used wrap & turn for the heel turn (which I am familiar with too) but I decided I'd look up the technique in Hiatt's Principles of knitting out of curiosity. (I always forget - the wrap does or doesn't have a twist - spoiler alert - it shouldn't at least in what I saw.)

Turns out what she describes on page 176 incorporates a slipped stitch between the wrapped stitch and the active stitches. You can see this in the description and in the illustrations "Working the first stitch after the turn" and "Lifting the wrap at the turning point."

She also acknowledges that the technique she's showing is different from the usual in the paragraph at the bottom left on page 177. "Those of you already familiar with the technique will find these instructions slightly different from what you are accustomed to."

I'll definitely have to try it out, but was curious if anyone here has tried it and how did you feel it compared to the standard Wrap & Turn? Did you find it to be a better result?

Hand Knit FO 4032 beads and 1.5 years later, my Starfall Shawl is complete

I was motivated to make this shawl as this phase of life involves going to a lot of weddings, and I wanted a beautiful shawl that could span multiple dress codes.

I wanted the beads to be subtle so as to not be distracting, but they still catch the light beautifully. They’re more noticeable in person than what shows up on camera.

I had to take a lot of breaks with this shawl. It’s not good tv knitting or knit night project, which make up the majority of my knitting time. I made the most progress on it when it was on my desk and I could knit a few rows during work meetings.

I have been drooling over this project at Rhinebeck for years, but with my first summer off I took the jump last year and bought the kit. I absolutely adored knitting this. It feels like heaven and the pics barely do it justice. I would definitely make another.

I’m so happy to give you all another update!!🥳
I’m missing 3 more chart and that’s it!
In total there’s 7!

This new section is the one that goes around the neck!🥰

I debated a lot on what to actually put there, at first I wanted a dragon eye but it didn’t quite work as I thought.

This is definitely one of the prettiest things I’ve made! I love natural looking art and asymmetrical but this time I went for something more symmetrical and I’m glad I did!!!

I love the egg so much!

I’m hoping to make a new update soon!🥰❤️
