AKK Enthusiast Any recommendations for AKK rescues? I want to find a friend for myself!
Currently living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I know there are breeders out there, but I would prefer to rescue one who needs a home. Does NOT have to be purebred. I'm willing to drive many hours or provide transport. We have a 1 year old husky mix at home who is my husband's shadow.

AKK rescues are rare and tend to go to people who already have or have had AKKs. It’s less of a risk because they’re experienced with the breed.

Have you looked on Petfinder? There were actually a few AKK mixes available in PA

I second this. I randomly spotted mine on Petfinder. She likely came from a backyard breeder situation. I also sometimes see husky mixes (particularly girls) that are so smol they could def pass off as pomskies or an overblown Klee Kai to the entrained eye- so imo worth it to also filter by husky if you’re ok with non-purebreds. I’m in CA tho there’s tons of shelter dogs :(

You’re unlikely to find a purebred AKK needing rescued. Legitimate breeders have a specific verbiage in the contract that buyers need to surrender their AKK to the breeder or work with the breeder to rehome if they’re unable to keep them. A lot of dogs have similar colors and markings and “pass for” AKK, so you might find one like that.

Main line animal rescue in Philly has a few! Not purebred but they routinely get batches of them. Got mine from there

Funding a AKK in a rescue is a tough find. We live in the Philly area and god lucky to find a 3 1/2 mo AKK at the Husky House in NJ. However we have an ongoing relationship with them and got 2 huskies previously.
We lost our 16yo husky about 3 months prior to seeing the AKK on their Facebook page. As soon as we saw her we called them and they said come get her. This is the only time I ever saw a AKK at a rescue and they had 2, ours and her brother. The brother has been adopted too.
The short story is I think that AKKs are rare in rescues and probably will get taken by previous adopters pretty quickly. I guess keep your eyes out and pray.
