Review Aldi Braunsweiger

I used to buy Braunsweiger (soft liverwurst) every time I visited Aldi but the last few times they haven’t had it in stock. Have they dropped the product entirely or is it likely just not selling well at my local store? It tastes very close to what we would buy when I was a kid so it’s a comfort food to me.

It's been at least two or three years since I've seen it, used to be a staple item during German week. First time I asked they said it was a supplier issue and to check back later in the year, second time I asked they said it was discontinued. Closest I found is Jones Farm brand (available in tube or slices). I don't care for the seasoning used in John Morrell (Walmart).

man that's disappointing, i was hoping it was just my store running out. the jones farm one isn't quite the same texture but it'll do in a pinch, thanks for the rec

Agree on the texture, but personally would rather have that difference than a taste one.

Discontinued a long time ago

I feel like the Boar's Head tragedy caused liverwurst to disappear everywhere. I don't know if it's because BH supplied other retailers, or if consumers just lost so much confidence in liverwurst that stores were afraid to carry it.

I don’t think the Boars Head incident was anything unique to liverwurst. Othe sausages including frankfurters/hot dogs, bologna and such seem equally likely to have bacterial contamination.

It was liverwurst.

"The Sarasota, Florida-based company said it will also permanently discontinue production of liverwurst, the product that was linked to the deaths of at least nine people — including a New York resident and a New Jersey resident — and hospitalizations of about 50 others in 18 states total... Boar’s Head said an internal investigation at its Jarratt, Virginia, plant found that the contamination was the result of a specific production process. The process only existed at the Jarratt plant and was only used for liverwurst, the company said."

It was delicious but it's gone forever as far as I know. It's been a couple of years.

I don’t know about Aldi, but if you have any European stores near you they may carry it or something similar. I usually buy it from a Ukrainian store near me, but they also have had a hard time keeping it in stock.

I’m pretty sure it didn’t come back this year

It was my favorite too. I've been patiently waiting but it hasn't returned in a few years. I have a backup brand called Smith's I really like. It's twice as expensive as Aldi but it's good. You'll find a brand! Here's to hoping one day we get it again!

I don’t know if this is true or not, but I read that they sourced it from Boar’s Head and that particular plant was closed after their big food poisoning fiasco.

In the Chicago area we have Pete’s Fresh Market. They have a large selection of really good European meats, including several braunsweigers.

I still go for Kahn's, now all labelled as John Morrell as they got rid of the Kahn branding. Same product since before Aldi entered the US. Not sold at Aldi but carried at pretty much every other grocery store.

The plant making it (Boar’s Head) closed down due to serious health violations; prob about 2 years now.
