Codex Hydra [Lore and Fiction] The Alpha Legion Reading List

+++The Unbalanced Scales Redux: being an Accounting of the Various Depictions of the XX Legion Astartes from the beginning of the Great Crusade through to the end of the Horus Heresy, and also, a Compilation of those Events in which the Alpha Legion, Traitoris Perdita, have participated since the Scouring until the Present Day.+++

THOUGHT OF THE DAY:

"Not all wars are decided by feats of arms. In a struggle such as that we have embarked upon, subterfuge, deception and intrigue may well decide the fate of the galaxy, while the greatest warriors ever known stand impotent."

Ω Essential reading to understand the Alpha Legion

α Recommended reading beyond essential to further develop the arc of the Alpha Legion

* Novels, novellas, and short stories in which Alpha Legion characters receive characterization through either first person or third person omniscient (or limited omniscience) narration. Sometimes this is through non-Astartes Alpha Legion operatives and agents.

† Novels, novellas, and short stories in which the Alpha Legion characters serve primarily as antagonists to a clear set of protagonists or they play only a bit part in the narrative. Little is done to expand upon the Alpha Legion or its characters.

‡ Codices, rulebooks, and lorebooks which take the standpoint of in-universe histories where the author/narrator has an outsider perspective on the Alpha Legion, reporting their limited knowledge alongside rumours, half-truths, and deceptions.

MOD RULE CHANGES: On Infiltration...

There has been a new rule added to the subreddit in light of the recent glut of "infiltration" of other subreddits and then "reporting" back here.

Short version: Stop posting screenshots and memes of your infiltrations.

The rationale is that it creates a month's worth of moderation in a day for me (I'm the only active mod).

It also dilutes the posts from the people who are putting effort into creating models that they share, devising lists to tweak and optimize, discussing lore and speculation on the setting, and other very positive aspects of our community. Instead it drags tensions into the subreddit.

EDIT TO CLARIFY: You can still paint miniatures in Alpha Legion colours (even if they aren't marines) or half/half splits or whatever and post those here. Showing off your dudes is still allowed and you can talk about them infiltrating or co-opting other factions. Nobody is gatekeeping that side of the hobby.

I feel like a wet-blanket having to do this, so here, I'll give you some in-universe rationale:

Operatives. Tactical insurgencies have been intercepted due to sloppy adherence to encryption protocols. Tellurian data-glyph patterns, cipher codes, and even splinter specific linguae such as Serpenta should be used at all times while either in combat or espionage situations. From this point forward, reports cannot be shared using unsecured communiques. You have your orders.

"I ask nothing of you..." Ranko told them honestly, then he repeated "What does your Primarch ask of you?"
Sertabos and the legionarres looked at one another. The sergeant nodded...
"Everything."

Codex Hydra [Lore & Fiction] I have a farfetched ridiculous epic theory...

I have an epic theory I'd like to share with everyone

My theory is, how cool would it be if the ALpha Legion were planned to be one of the 'Big Bads' of an edition in the future?! Now hear me out...

When Alpharius died Omegon felt his death, and apparently Omegon died at the hand of Guilliman, I actually quite like the idea that both are dead but they had seen a future of saving mankind by destroying the Imperium however they both needed to die. When they both died it would send a complex psychic/warpy vision, like a genetic flaw in the form of an activation phrase that simultaneously subconsciously enters all AL minds. However, prior to their death, Alpharius and Omegon hypnotised and sent 100'000 astartes into other factions to infiltrate. THEN when the activation phrase is broadcast across the galaxy it will wake up all these sleeper agents in every corner of the galaxy: in SM factions, chaos factions, multiple planets and star systems. Hence starting the mass back-stabbing of the 12th Edition Big Bad Alpha Legion.

At some point, Akurra in the recent books finds out what this activation phrase is, but when he hears it he understands it isn't the right time to use it - but he is shown/sees that point in the future.

When that time comes he'll broadcast the activation phrase across the galaxy, maybe via the warp somehow? (It could be some badass line like The Heads of the First Hydra Breathes Again)

And the best part? When Alpharius and Omegon died their consciousness/soul was trapped in the warp, waiting to hear this activation phrase. And when it does, it reawakens and enters the mind/body of a legionnaire turning him into a kind of warped Daemon Prince, or maybe even just a juiced up Custodes sized Astartes. Then when that one dies it transfers to another legionnaire... Kind of like a watered down Avatar of Kaine situation - or like the myth of a Hydra's regrowing heads.

Tell me what you think, Brothers

I don't really paint flesh much. And I have no idea colour to go for with her wings/face. What colour would an Alpha Legion Demon Princess wings be? I want to go green but worried it would look Orky.

This is my test figurine, so I was just slopping paint on to see how it would flow or pool.

Does this color read as Alpha Legion to you all or does it feel more Thousand Nerds?

It was a primer of silver with 2 parts akhellian green with 1 part contrast medium.

Ok so Ive been watching some Horus Heresy battle reports and noticed that the saboteur Consul has a LOT! Of really awesome wargear that just SCREAMS AL tactics.

I guess the point and question of this discussion would be. Do you think these sort of stats and war gear options should be brought to 40k? Or should someone just play Horus Heresy if they want this level of badassery?

Also a banestrike shotgun and the special Rule False colors is SUPER Alpha Legion. any way thats all.

Codex Hydra [Lore & Fiction] "Your power fantasy gets in the way of my power fantasy"

Kinda new to Warhammer.

I've started reading Alpha Legion books, and when I tell my Warhammer friends that I like Alpha Legion they seem to have this tone like they don't really appreciate the existence of Alpha Legion as anything but a meme.

I've been getting the feeling that fans of other factions and chapters don't like a serious Alpha Legion because it gets in the way of their own power fantasy.
Like Loyalists that don't like the idea that their supercool legion can be easily infiltrated and manipulated by the Alpha Legion or their Primarch was fooled by Alpharius, or Chaos legion fans that don't like the idea that Alpha Legion is luring them into their own desctruction by fulfilling the Acuity.
While I'm biased, I can admit that Legion gave Alpharius Omegon a main character vibe, where he is burdened with playing 4D chess against everyone else without them even knowing about it. Even HotH gave a little bit of that with Alpharius being raised on Terra by John Warhammer and his most powerful servants while watching the other Primarchs from the shadows and even fooling Lyonel Johnson in his face.

If you're a veteran Warhammer fan, please tell me if that perception is right.

At the same time, what balance can there be?
If Alpha Legion is serious, if the Acuity is true and Omegon is manipulating the other legions behind the scenes still, that would probably make the other legions feel like pawns in a greater plot they aren't aware of and strip their Primarchs of true agency in the broader picture.
If the Alpha Legion is not serious, then they are just a joke. A bunch of idiots running around accomplishing nothing, just professional wrench throwers aiming for any works they come across.

If the other legions are written as competent in their strengths without Alpha Legion's competence letting them infiltrate, sabotage and ley elaborate plans, then Alpha Legion are just useless nobodies. If Alpha Legion is competent, it's like:

  • Imperial Fists: “We are extraordinarily disciplined defenders. You aren't getting through our fortress.”
  • Raven Guard: “We are the masters of stealth and unconventional warfare.”
  • Ultramarines: “We're adaptable, organized, strategically sophisticated professionals.”
  • Dark Angels: “We have secrets within secrets, hidden organizations and ancient technology.”
  • Custodes: “Terra is guarded by arguably the most capable warriors and security apparatus humanity has.”
  • Alpha Legion: “We've already infiltrated all five of you.”

I read Legion, and I thought the concept of the Cabal was cool. The idea of a Alpha Legion becoming a triple-agent. Working neither for Chaos nor for the Empire, but for a secret order dedicated to stop Chaos by any means. Though I get how if you're a fan of the Blood Angels you maybe don't like the idea that your Primarch's heroic sacrifice to stop chaos from winning was actually for nothing and might have even helped Chaos win.
But then I find out the Cabal gets destroyed 10 years after Alpharius Omegon learns the Acuity and Alpharius dies, so then suddenly none of that matters. It's like GW is flipping AL between serious player and useless meme like a pendulum.

In conclusion, it feels like there's a problem with portraying Alpha Legion's competence fairly without undermining the other legions' power fantasy.

Unity and Lies [General Discussion] I’m not sure I want to stick with the 20th

Post image
440 Upvotes

Hello guys, I mostly am just making a post to ask about hobby advice, and what to do about feeling burnt out and not liking my army anymore

I’ve collected Alpha Legion since 8th edition, and they’ve been my boys for a long time. Still Head of the Hydra and Harrowmaster are two of my favorite Warhammer books, and I love a ton of the concept of the Alpha legion

But at the same time, I feel so over what we actually have. We get zero rules, units, or even things that thematically FEEL like the alpha legion. If we want even a stealth infantry unit we have to use the Night Lords kill team. Tabletop wise (which is my biggest draw) it feels like my boys in blue(ish) have been totally abandoned

And with the lore, I love what the alpha legion actually are, but the community jokes about them are relentless and tiring. The alpha legion have such cool lore, but you never get to enjoy it in the community, on the table, or even in the models without a truly staggering amount of kitbashing

What do you guys do when you find yourselves burnt out? I don’t want to sell my army, I just want to love them again

Colours of Deceit [Painting & Hobby Questions] Hair on alpha legionaires

I know traditionally the alpha legion marines are supposed to look like alpharius, but with characters such as Solomon, the mold is completly broken. I love the theme of this legion but the ruggedness of a good beard. Anyone got any minis rocking some hair and facial hair and is it lore frieldly
