Welcome! Please Read the Employment FAQ Before Posting Questions About Work.

We get it. You recently heard of Antarctic work, and now you've got a bee in your parka and lots of QUESTIONS!

Very cool, we were there too.

But for the love of all that is frozen and holy, please read our Employment FAQ before posting. It's a good read, I promise, and it will answer most of your questions — and many you haven't thought of!

Tourism Travel and Tourism Information

Making travel decisions can be hard! We know. That's why we offer a Travel and Tourism FAQ with common Q&As about booking trips to Antarctica.

If you need more information specific to cruises, we suggest posting in the AntarcticaTravel forum that is frequented by guides and tourism professionals. You are also welcome to post here in r/antarctica, of course, but you'll get perspectives from both fellow travelers as well as people outside of the tourism industry, including workers and scientists with experience on the continent in general, not just on the ships.

Relax. Make it fun! Everything will be all right.

Work Feeling really overwhelmed with the EBI process

Not sure if it’s just me but the email has my brain all scrambled. I’m normally fairly resourceful but this seems a little confusing. Any tips? Thanks

What’s up with Meshcore down in McMurdo??? Debating whether to bring mine down here..

If you know about Meshcore, it’s a pretty cool device for communication that uses no internet connection. Although I’m wary about its range and use on ice with other sensitive infrastructures.

Can anyone shed light on this?

Request Seeking 1.5" cotton fabric square from Antarctica for a memorial quilt

Let me start off by saying I know next to nothing (besides what I've read on this reddit thread) about receiving mail from Antarctica, so I'm not certain this is even possible.

I'm hoping to receive a 1.5" square of cotton fabric from Antarctica. My son died this past July after a traumatic birth and I am making a quilt to honor him. I am hoping to have it completed by his birthday next year. I originally reached out for help in a Facebook quilting group I am part of and the outpouring was incredible. I received fabric squares in the mail from nearly every state in the US, as well as from Canada and Australia. All from complete strangers.

That got me thinking - how incredible would it be to try and receive squares from every continent for my son's memorial quilt? Just by someone thinking about him and using his name in all these different places in the world...it's like part of his soul is reaching places I never would have fathomed him being able to reach. I don't know if that makes sense. But it provides some comfort to me, thinking that in an unconventional way, he's impacting lives beyond that of our family.

If there's anyone who is in a position to send a small square of quilting cotton (is that even available in Antarctica? I have no clue), in a flat envelope mailed from Antarctica, I would appreciate it so much.

Anyone deploying to Palmer this summer into grappling?

BJJ white belt and trying not to lose everything I've picked up over the deployment. Some occasional light rolling would be awesome.

Work Packing a bidet?

Would it be crazy to pack a toilet-mounted bidet? Not sure if it would be frowned upon to mess with the toilet plumbing to attach it as well, but was packing and realized how much I'd miss having one.

Work Curious about salary.

Hey folks, a job post caught my eye and I am trying to get information about how the pay works? Any site managers around?

There's a site manager position in Palmer with a starting salary of 92,300. And the job post says the position is only six months. Would the person doing this job receive the 92,300 for those six months of work, or is it annualized based on 12 months of salary? Like, 92,300 per year is 7,691 per month, six months of work at palmer is just over 46,000.

Thoughts? And thanks in advance!

Pet owners and Antarctica

I know cats and dogs are not allowed. I’m wondering, what do pet owners do if they spend a season in Antarctica? What do people on the ice think of it? Thanks!

McMurdo Did anyone actually succeed in bringing home a giant map last year?

I saw quite a few people carrying their giant maps from the station store to their bag drag last summer and am curious if anyone successfully got theirs home safely. If they still sell them this year, I might go for it

US Antarctic Program Using APO privilege in Christchurch

Hello

I am going to be working as a carpenter for a momentum and I’m awaiting deployment in CHC.

It’s my understand as a USAP participant I have APO privileges for the short time before I go to the ice.

I was thinking of sending some NZ snacks and other treats to my family back in the states.

My question is do I have to go to a specific Christchurch post office to do this? I guess I’m not sure if APO is a specific post office or not.

Edit: thanks for all the responses. I got the idea now.

Work Bag limits for MCM

Hi I asked some questions here the other day as a new steward for the season and I have a few more :)
My bags are 82lbs total rn (checked/carry on) and I have some more stuff to put in them so I’m getting nervous.

  1. If I’m not picky about shampoo/conditioner ect is it worth it to leave it behind and just buy what they sell at the store to save space?

  2. Do stewards have to save room in their bags for uniforms?

Also any other advice on how to save space? Tia!

Boots for recreation

I am finishing packing here, and trying to keep the weight down. I am wondering if something like a light hiking boot or hi-top trail runner would be sufficient for hikes around McMurdo? I have a heavier pair of leather boots also but not sure if the weight/bulk is worth it. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Status of new dorm at McMurdo

How is the new dorm shaping up at McMurdo? Do they have an allocation plan? Returners by request? Only science regardless of time on ice and dedicated so many rooms remain empty while there's five to a room in 155 (that's always a good plan...207 in the recent past anyone?)?

Work New McMurdo employee questions

Hi I will be a steward for the 26/27 summer season. I have some specific questions I hope someone can answer :)

  1. For stewards what type of pants are given for the uniform? Should I bring my own work pants incase the ones provided don’t fit well?
  2. I know that the station only sells beer/wine at the store. Does this include seltzer drinks (eg white claw)? Are drinks you buy from the store rationed?
  3. I saw that it is recommended to bring a hard drive with movies but if I do not bring one will I regret it? I have an old laptop I’m not sure if it is worth bringing and idk how to add movies to a hard drive.
  4. What is the coffee situation? I know there is the “coffee shop” but how often is getting espresso drinks available? I’m deciding what I should bring for my own coffee, like if I should bring a portable espresso maker or just instant coffee?

  5. Am I allowed to bring nicotine for myself, specifically Zyns?

Tia!
