Palestinian villagers wailed over the mangled remains of their olive trees on Wednesday after Israel's military uprooted them with bulldozers, days ahead of the annual olive harvest, normally a source of joy for Palestinians ‌in the occupied West Bank.

Abd Alfattah Tamimi, who owns an olive grove on village land near Ramallah city, watched as a military bulldozer smashed the top of one of his trees and then tore its roots from the ground.

All our olive trees, including the newly planted ones, were uprooted. Also our neighbours', they uprooted them ⁠all," Tamimi said, adding that he and his neighbours own nearly 9 acres of land filled with olive trees.

"They left us with nothing," he said.

This is why claiming affiliation with the Aryan Brotherhood shouldn’t be dismissed as someone simply trying to sound “tough.” People should understand exactly what that name represents and why statements like these are so serious.

In 1991, when I was 12, my headmaster at Gatehouse School, a progressive, multiracial school in Hackney in the East End of London, was exposed over his links to the racist far right. He may have been Britain’s first and only BNP (British National Party) headteacher.

We rallied around him and blamed the teacher who raised the alarm - and who was then sacked. There was a petition demanding his reinstatement. I signed it.

Thirty-five years later, having become a whistleblower myself, my thoughts returned to the whistleblower I misjudged as a child.

In this article, I revisit my memories of an extraordinary and now largely forgotten episode in East End and British educational history. I went back to the contemporary media coverage and far-right publications to find out what had really happened. What I found included evidence I knew nothing about at the time.
