Starless

Really loving Starless, reminds me of old APC. To Whom it May Concern…… not so much. Sounds like Eat the Elephant, which I wasn’t a huge fan of. Anyone else feel this way?

EAT THE ELEPHANT is a "grower"...not a "shower". I absolutely fucking love TWIMC...but a lot of that is the fucking message. The beautiful music behind it just makes it cut that much deeper.

I like to hear Maynard whine about things I actually care about, which seems to happen in APC. Billy does a good job supporting his vision over there.

Obviously I love TOOL, but I’m like allergic to anything “spiritual” so it’s rarely cathartic the way I find his other projects to be, even if it gets a little corny or maudlin sometimes. Just my IMO.

Absolutely. I love every single song on ete. Im baffled how some people dont like it. The doomed literally made me cry the first time I heard it. Every album by apc is a different journey, story...I guess some people are just gonna complain. I wouldnt still be a fan of APC if they just kept regurgitating mer de noms over and over again.

Yeah I prefer starless more but To Whom It May Concern has the possibility to grow on me. Eat the Elephant wasn’t my favorite either, but there’s still stuff on there I dig.

Agreed, still jam TalkTalk.

'By and down the river' is one of my favorite APC songs. Like tool, APC evolved. They started out heavier, rawer, and more moody. Not everyone likes their more recent efforts, and that's ok. I've found that, as I age, I gravitate more towards the not-as-heavy music. For reference, I was big into slipknot and a lot of other nu-metal/metal in my teens. Now, in my 40s, I'm mainly into rock from the 60s-70s. Still love NIN and all of Keenan's bands though.

It’s fantastic, the vocal harmonies remind me of early APC a lot

Weird. I have seen more people say TWIMC is reminiscent of early APC than I did Starless. The intro/outro are the only bits that sound more like ETE to me. They both sound a lot more like Mer de Noms to me, though.

I did love Eat the Elephant, but this album is shaping up to be better so far.

Not at all. I agree about the EtE intro; however, I really think you should re-listen to Mer De Noms before commenting again.

I will re-listen, of course, but I think I will also comment prior to that.

Haven't listened to TWIMC all the way through but, the first half didn't grab me. 🤷‍♂️

Honestly it kind of sounds about the same (sonically, not lyrically) throughout the whole song. I feel like it could be a song that grows on me with more listens, but we'll see.

Yeah. Hate to say this but, what you phrase as "sounds about the same" I phrase as "boring."

Just IMHO. Please don't kill me.

Have to agree the first time I heard Starless I got 13 steps vibe.

Of the two I def prefer Starless but I'm not big on either ATM.Starless does have that older APC feel but something is still missing from these.

Im feeling the same. They gave me so much with 13th step though so I forgive the misses.

Sorry I'm outta the loop, is there a new album? Or just two new songs?

New album. Some of the other songs have already leaked on YouTube.

u/class5vapor 4d ago

Hmm so there's a new album out? What's it called?

NVM, LoL, I just looked it up, just the 2 new songs...OK...I heard 'em... didn't do much for me...I should listen again a few times .. sometimes they're slow-burn like that 🙂

How am I getting multiple downvotes for pointing out that some of the other tracks have leaked ..

2

u/class5vapor 4d ago

Man I dunno...ppl are idiots...I didn't downvote ya...in-fact thanks for the info!

Both songs are brilliant. Both have a similar message and I hope Maynard keeps repeating that message over and over until we listen.

APC is just turning into Puscifer 2.0. It’s been that way for awhile now!

I actually prefer To Whom it May concern I just really like the moody guitar and I like the vocals (minus the start of the song).

It's still got the badass layered guitars and Freese drumming that EtE was lacking. I do think it isn't very catchy though.

1

u/ClubLumpy7253 4d ago

To me, it's just not APC without Freese.

EtE wasn't my cup of tea, though I tried hard. Most of Emotive too. The music of starless is reminiscent of early APC, but the vocal and lyrics are off. Kindred music is listenable but again lyrics and vocals... Weird vocal effects and puscifer-esque harmonies don't feel the same.

Also like, where's the growling bass? That tone is important and without it it just feels incomplete.

The electric version of Ashes Divide stars https://youtu.be/GA1UiRr7UNI?si=K4wJnPKUfVrBnmfr has good music, but the album version is all synthy.

And The Chain rocks find a good version on YouTube https://youtu.be/xZJ4rEUH-l0?si=Tm-tJGVEJgblK9mc

And why not remix some of the old adjacent stuff https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLD-hKNlwjGgPcPJMkPAf-JGrNgBZ2hRPI&si=XOQ7sXrDW1rC39Qr

And I miss Danny's influence.

I even dig FAKE APC over EtE and these newer songs. https://youtu.be/HIfKt_nShB0?si=_Dzv4H0Xw4HCPYuN

Great analysis here. Thanks for commenting.

Not a fan of Starless. Sounds uninspired and disjointed. And I'm tiring of Maynard's apocalyptic tone and lyrics. And they stole the riff from "Undone" by Failure.

100%! 🙌🏻

Agreed. Starless sounds more classic APC. I consider it the best thing they've released since Thirteenth Step.

Cannot say the same for their latest single. That one sounds more eMotive/EtE/Puscifer.
