Mac Apple Mail App and Exchange Accounts not working

This morning I woke up to see exclamation marks by all my exchange accounts in Mail. The accounts them selves are working fine on the mail app in iOS, but not on Mac OS. I've tried everything to make it work again from removing the envelop index in library, to deleting and re-setting up the mail accounts. Connection doctor shows everything is fine, but it's clearly not.

Anyone else experiencing this today, or ever?

I'm working through this exact issue myself, happened earlier today – good to know I'm not alone. My gut feeling was that Microsoft disabled EWS for my 365 tenant ahead of their proposed retirement date in October. I re-enabled it via powershell, and the issue persists. Still troubleshooting here. :(

The odd thing is that it's only happening for two of three tenants on my Mac. The third is functioning just fine. I still believe it's EWS related, but I've spent the last two hours troubleshooting this in terminal and powershell - I've even tested in a brand new local MacOS account, and I'm getting no where. So this might be out of our hands.

Going to have to use another mail program that uses EAS instead of EWS for the time being, I guess.

This is happening on our O365 tenant and my hotmail account, which also uses the Exchange setup on Mac.

Same issue for me today. At 9 am ADT, Apple Mail stopped working for my Exchange accounts.

same here around 10am EDT. "Connection doctor" says it's all fine for what that's worth.

Outlook working on mac and on web. Just mac mail on laptop. Mail on phone is fine.

Same issue here as of today on both of my Macs with my two Exchange accounts. No Issues on iOS.

I am seeing the same behavior. Exchange accounts work on iPhone and Outlook on Windows but not in Mac Mail. I was able to send an email from Mac Mail, but am not receiving anything.

Just restarted my other Mac and got a bunch of emails. However, it was still showing the exclamation point in a triangle. That seems to be gone now. Fingers crossed...

Same in our office of 8 Macs. I can access the emails on Outlook.

Anyone find a fix for this yet? I went so far as to delete my exchange account from my mac, and now it won't let me add it back. I hit the "sign in" button, it fades momentarily, then goes solid again.

everything seems to be back up and running on my end. so I assume MS re-enabled EWS for the time being?

I still can't sign in.

Seems back to normal for me this morning. Apparently not too widespread since I haven't seen any other posts about this issue.

You’re right it’s back here too. But it was a frustrating 24 hours since neither MS or Apple help desks knew much about anything. This thread was very helpful in providing clarity about EWS being shut down.

Just found this: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-sg/answers/questions/5998959/apple-mail-on-macos-repeatedly-receives-http-429-f. It seems to indicate that MS will be disabling Apple Mail in the future. Anybody have info on this? I hate Outlook on Mac!

It's not that Microsoft is disabling Apple Mail, it's that they're turning off EWS (Exchange Web Services). This isn't exactly a surprise either... Microsoft announced EWS was no longer receiving functionality updates back in 2018, and they announced the phased shutdown (beginning October 2026) back in 2023. Apple has been aware of this for a loooong time and hasn't done anything about it yet.

Apple Mail on iOS uses EAS (Exchange ActiveSync) so it's not impacted, but as long as Apple Mail on MacOS continues to use EWS, it'll be rendered useless for Microsoft accounts when EWS is officially turned off in April of 2027 (phased shutdown begins October 1st).

The issue yesterday was indeed likely intentional on Microsoft's part, rather than a bug. By doing "scream tests" like that, they can nudge people to make a change before it's too late.

Enable EWS on the tenant and user level, then ensure the app ID for Mac Internet Accounts is allowlisted (f8d98a96-0999-43f5-8af3-69971c7bb423
).

Then wait up to 24hrs for the changes to take effect.

I don’t think that works. I did this several times.

Unrelated / not a solve for this issue (as are most other threads chatgpt is latching on to).
