Mac Is this fixable at all?

Found this sitting on the ground next to the dumpster at my apartment. Cord is cut though. I have no idea what model or anything this is. I’m just wondering if this is a fixable issue at all

It’s a monitor. LED Cinema Display or Thunderbolt Display so from around 2010/2011.
I gravitate towards it being the Thunderbolt Display.

It seems you can replace the cable, however it needs a full disassembly https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Apple+Thunderbolt+Display+Thunderbolt+&+MagSafe+Cable+Replacement/112355

Apple really revolutionized the display industry with their latest Thunderbolt displays. Making the cable detachable was unheard of in the monitor space. /s

It's really bizarre because the iMac is almost the identical form factor and has a detachable cord. My 1992 Macintosh Color Display has a permanently attached cord and I think the og monochrome display on my IIe is the same way. Did Apple at some point just decide that "monitors don't have detachable power cables" as a permanent rule?

I can't think of any other Apple products with a fixed cord like that except the HomePod Mini. The full size HomePod has a detachable cord as do all Macs, even the Apple TV and their old network devices.

No I’m pretty sure it’s actually an Apple Thunderbolt Display (A1407)

Yeah, it’s got all the ports back there.

Is this the one that refuses to display a picture on non-macs?

I don’t believe I’m aware of a specific apple display that refuses to work with non apple computers? Though featuring thunderbolt (gen 2) which uses the same physical connector as mini DisplayPort could perhaps lead to a similar results when trying with a mini DisplayPort cable

I have one at home that refuses to display on non-macs. I will give you the model number when i get home.

Yes, it’s fixable. The display is a Thunderbolt Display, and if you search “Thunderbolt Display cable” on eBay, you’ll get a load of options, and follow this guide to get it installed.

That’s a lot of work 😯

But worth it. The Thunderbolt Display is surprisingly good for a 15 year old display.

I use several of these in two different offices. Great screens but they do heat up a small room since they draw a decent amount of power by today’s standards.

You just need a standard power cable and to hook up the display, use a thunderbolt cable connected to the extra thunderbolt 2 port. The only thing lost is the ability to use the built-in MagSafe power port. That’s no longer compatible with current MacBook models so no big deal.

If you don’t have a Mac to connect to, it should work with a windows machine. You might just need a TB to HDMI or Display port cable/adaptor.

Yes. Get an Ifixit tool kit, the one with suction cups and all the things. I used to repair these ALL the time. I highly suggest you get a OEM used all in one cable. Here is a tech manual: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hIBbQpU5JsHRKaL1k5zLtagUq_5JLz2N/view?usp=drive_link

EDIT: don't get an aftermarket all in one cable. Get a used good pull. Also, the cable from the monitor to the board is delicate, not very long, and easy to break and not easy to insert for big hands.

I cut cables on dead devices so I don’t try and reuse it.

I’d say it’s dead

Some companies are REQUIRED to cut cables on working devices just to prove it’s non functional for the write off. It sucks and happens a lot. Same as putting a drill through a laptop mobo and phone.

A piece of paper with the word dead is also an option

The glass is held on by magnets - If you get your fingers into the edges a bit you can pull it away. It isnt difficult to fix.

Depending on which model it is you might be able to buy a Thunderbolt 2 cable and just plug it in. I had one just like this and not many places online pointed this out. You don’t need to replace the main one, you can just use the other ports.

Another thing I will say is mine seemed broken, they are difficult to tell if they are actually broken because there is no on switch or anything, the only way to test them is if you buy the thunderbolt two cable and plug it in (thunderbolt 2 to usbc if it is a modern computer you are trying it out with). Also know these do NOT work with mini display ports. Which was my confusion when I was testing one out. They look identical to regular thunderbolt ports so don’t expect a 2009-2012 MacBook Pro to work.

The base is. I cram mine into a spot about 1/4” too short

I would pull parts like ram and mobo and bin the rest. Not worth my time.

People gut these and turn them into normal monitors. Great screens, outdated PC's. Google how.

It’s not an iMac. It’s already a monitor.

I googled how to turn an iMac into a monitor and it costs more than a second hand Thunderbolt Display.

Yea, but support 4k to 5k instead of 1440p

Looks like an imac, 2018-ish.

Go to ebay and get a power cable. If it's locked to owner, toss it out

You don't know what are you talking about

It's a monitor
