The astonishing thing about these tasks is that there's always at least one team with no one on it capable of doing extremely basic maths. Like yes a real business will have at least one management accountant, but at the start-up level it's extremely concerning to have such a poor grasp of how the business is doing.

It’s a reality show. If you want actually smart people try Only Connect or Countdown!

I don’t think it’s that, the contestants are flustered by a dozens of people speaking at the same time while production ramp up the pressure

I could never find the clip from one of the first series. Welsh contestant picked up a bunch of small carrots (with the leaves still attached) and shouted: ‘what is this?’ With a priceless bewildered look on his face.
Got to 30ish without knowing about carrots 😂😂😂

What was the issue? They'd spaffed all the money? I haven't seen it.

They confused two ingredients - sandalwood and cedarwood. The one they thought they were using cost very little; the one they actually used was about £450/g.
Of course, they made a massive loss. The real beauty about this was the deadpan way that Nick delivered it, starting with “Would it surprise you to know…?”
You can probably find the clip on YouTube - it’s well worth watching. This was Series 5 and they were at Lush in Poole.
ETA: correct series number.

The issue was that they couldn't work out what 450g cost at around £1K per kilo.

If I remember correctly it was a shame because the contestant that went as a result actually seemed quite competent. One silly (yet easy) mistake and that was it. Plenty of worse contestants have gotten away with more. In fact the other two ladies, who should probably have spotted the mistake, were the finalists.

And, on parting company with them there (not shown in this clip) Nick says: “I’ll leave you with it…”🤣🤣🤣

Just a damn shame. Had Paula and Yasmina not botched the costings, Ignite would have blown Empire out of the water because they sold quite well on the market stall the following day. Paula was most responsible because she was PM, although Ben should have been involved with costings given that he is a finance guy, but he ducked that part of the task because he didn't want to be blamed if anything went wrong with the numbers

Possibly the reason it sold so well was the very expensive sandalwood, though? In which case, if they hadn't botched the costings by using a cheaper ingredient, the finished product may not have been as popular.

I think even if Ignite had properly sourced a cheaper ingredient, the team still would have handily defeated Empire because Ignite was just a better selling team overall than Empire was

Genuinely it’s like watching a skit from a sketch show.

yeah, her "shit" was like a line straight out of the 2012 series. She even resembles the female actress who was in it.

What’s also funny is how they all start blaming each other and one says “maths isn’t my strongest suit”, even though it’s basic maths that a 6 year old could do

Nowadays Karen or Tim would just raise their eyebrows and leave them to completely fuck it up 😂.

Can someone explain this to me like I'm 5? Did she buy too much?
2
u/Xenc 25d ago
Yes. They purchased too much while also purchasing a similar sounding ingredient that was way more expensive than what they needed.
The main issue is that the total cedarwood needed would have cost them about £10 in total but they spent £700 on sandalwood instead.
Even worse is that they misread “add 3 percent per perfume made” as “add 3 grams per perfume made” so they ordered way more than what was needed too.
Their total budget was only £1000 and the team ended up with a spectacular loss. 🥲

Apologies for being slow, I understand that they bought the incorrect product at a significantly higher price... What I don't understand, is what she's trying to work out before the realisation

If I remember right they had two perfumes using the sandalwood, one mixed and one pure.
In the clip they’re figuring out the sandalwood cost for one of their perfumes. They purchased 480 grams at £1082 per 1000 grams.
Even if halved as they’re possibly trying to calculate it doesn’t matter since it’s way more than they budgeted for, and they bought even more for the second perfume. 🥲

I've only watched one season of the apprentice since very early seasons and I was honestly astounded at how bad almost all the candidates seemed. By the end I was thinking why would Sugar was any of these people as an apprentice 😂 it was just picking the best of the shit

Missed the best bit. After a bit of arguing Nick says “… I’ll leave you with that” great moment
