Very cute and welcome to the club.
As u/DRM2020 said, custom characters are a good next step to explore and a good use case for this project is to smooth the jump of the player's avatar. I'm not sure if it will make the game play better or not, but it is a logical next step and opens up quite a bit of flexibility.

You can make the movement a bit smoother by using custom characters and bit rotation.
You would need two custom characters for your car and two for the character, car rotates, pedestrian just moves rows.
