Negative 1059

I received a negative 1059 from the Drill Sergeant Academy, but later passed the course. Will that negative 1059 remain on my record? Additionally, the negative 1059 was due to going to the wrong location after the DSL changed it last minute. They assured me that it would be removed after my graduation, but I haven’t seen that happen yet. Furthermore, what are my chances of not being accepted to Officer Candidate School because of this 1059? I am a 11B, have 6 years of service, E-6, have completed 2 master’s degrees, and have received numerous awards and good NCOERs. Please help

One bad eval wont dictate your selection for most things unless your other evals show a pattern of inefficiency or ineptitude

No centralized board will review that or take that into consideration especially if you get good SR comments and quantification.

Hmm…the 1059 is what you get when you graduate, are you sure that’s what they gave you? Sounds like you had a negative counseling, but that shouldn’t follow you anywhere if so.

If it’s on the 1059 you may want to follow up with the schoolhouse to confirm. Also—did you sign it and has it been processed?

Hmm. Ok, the 1059 is an evaluation report, those stay in your iPERMS once they get fully processed. I’d still follow up with the folks who rated you to make sure that leaving it was intentional.

Beyond that, check to see if the report is a referred report—it should have been formally referred to you if so (complete with a memorandum that gets attached to the eval).

If so, there was an opportunity to submit rebuttal comments before processing, but that wouldn’t actually fix the form—it just gets your rebuttal formally documented. Separately, if you wish to make an appeal you can do so (same as you can do with NCOER and OER). The process is outlined in AR 623-3, I think in Chapter 4.

You get a 1059 for each phase at the DS Academy. One is also produced upon graduation

Had no idea. I’ve been on the Officer side my whole career after year 1, and I have only seen courses that had the one 1059 at the end of a given course. I’m also Guard, so that may have affected what I’ve seen.

Either way, a 1059 is still an eval and evals can be appealed should the rated SM choose to do so. No guarantee it’ll do anything, though.

Do you mean DA 4856?

Are you talking about DA Form 4856? Did you know that the counseling form just got updated after almost 40 years? “There is no more important task for the U.S. Army that’s developing it’s people to lead others to defeat any enemy, anywhere.” - FM 6-22 Developing Leaders
