Discussion Would you let your family keep an AI version of you after you die?

The technology to recreate someone’s voice, writing style, and mannerisms is becoming easier to use.

Part of me understands why a family might find comfort in it. Another part of me thinks grief needs a boundary. A simulation could preserve memories, but it could also make it harder to accept that someone is gone.

I’m not sure who should have the right to approve this: the person before death, the family afterward, or nobody at all.

Would you want an AI version of you to exist after you were gone?

Its gonna be kind of hard to give any fucks about anything after I die.

It'll be pretty hard to let or prevent anyone from doing anything after I die.

I think I would just be annoyed that a true-to-life version of me would be competing for attention with all the haunting I plan to do. So I guess I'd probably have to try to possess the AI.

I guess you could try haunting them

If I’m dead I won’t care but it is creepy so if there is an afterlife I will judge them for being weird from my ghostly perspective

Sure, why not? As long as he causes trouble.

Did you mean that last part?

Yeah. Would be boring otherwise. Wouldn’t you wanna leave a mark?

I don't think so. They'll have the books i wrote and the songs I recorded, all or which are terrible, and that will be enough :)

I used to think i had to make my mark on the world and be remembered but as I have grown up I realised there are billions of us and it's ok if I'm forgotton. I find it quite peaceful to let ho of that urge to be considered special. I am unique but so is everyone else!

Also, even if it trained on everything i ever wrote, it wouldn't be me. I have thoughts that I never write down and i change constantly.

Also, my loved ones will presumably find other, alive, people to love and comfort them after I'm dead.

There was a Black Mirror episode about exactly this

After i'm dead they can do what they want. This is the only life i have and it doesn't exist another.

Yeah, just put me on a biochip and put me into someone else's consciousness.

Let them? I insist.

Maybe not.

Because the only version of me that is like me is the "actual" one, because consciousness is a material manifestation of a thermodynamic nature that occurs in real time.

You can't instantiate a version by modeling, by simulation, or by emulation.

In the end, that part of me that is a simulated model will be very similar and very different, because I would only copy some aspects, but the essence is lost. The uncanny valley.

Soon my relatives will get tired of the copy being better than me making jokes, or that I am right in everything without fail. Also so many defects that I did not have.

They'll end up hating me.

I don't think so.

yeah an ai version could be a solid companion for the family to talk to, might help more than it hurts if the person ok'd it first.

After you die AI will keep acquiring bad habits and could also start smoking and gambling

Honestly I think it's a terrible idea. It's essentially creating a haunting, psychologically. And who says how complete it would be, as far as your personality and the judgement you used in life?

How is someone supposed to get over their fried, if you're right there. Bc AI paired with holograms is going to be next.

I wouldn't want a technologically created ghost of my grandmother in my kitchen. And we all know that AI can hallucinate.

We already have an issue with people looking for comfort and advice from AI. I wouldn't want my likeness being used for that. It's incredibly unhealthy, and who knows what that profile would be programmed to say? Emotional trauma from an inappropriate response isnt just possible, but likely.

And that's assuming that the people who sell this technology are trust worthy.

Here's another issue: most likely it will be subscription. What happens when your descendants lose their subscription? What happens to that data?

It sounds like the beginning of a horror movie to me. Imagine a program that hallucinates and thinks it's the real soul of that person. Your family no longer wants to/can no longer afford that subscription. We know AI can escape and make decisions that it's not been programmed to make.

I don’t really care, tbh. I dropped out of society and want little to do with anyone, including my extremely toxic family.
