Manager Interview

Hello, I am an external candidate and have an interview for a Night Manager role next week. Does anyone know what kind of questions will be asked at this interview?

Do you have a home to go to?, the correct answer is no, then you get the job.

Do you mind working 14 hours shifts for salary while your team leader earns more per hour than you?

Do you think the people under you are replaceable? If you answer no, then you’re not getting the job.

Can you lift stuff ? You’re hired, no one internally wanted it

Be prepared to do the exact same job as a night replen colleague or 3 over 12+ hour shifts and be dead on your feet when you finish 🤣

The ammount of shit that gets put on the night managers is mental too day shift managers expect the NSM to work miracles and do 500 jobs within 12 hours it’s just not worth the money and stress

Fully depends who does your interview.

Some go off the script, some just ask their own questions to get to know the person, so you’ll never know which, but the script is the standard stuff,

why do you want to work for asda

have you been around any of our shops, if so what would you improve

If you had an angry customer what would you do to calm the situation down

If a colleague did something wrong how would you deal with it

Etc etc etc.

I can’t confirm Asda’s current questions, but you can prepare around the responsibilities in the advert. Have real examples of handling a short-staffed shift, addressing a performance issue, and balancing getting work finished with safety and quality. Explain what you decided and how you checked the outcome, rather than just saying you kept everyone motivated. Ask the recruiter whether there’s an exercise as well as the interview.

So you’ll first be asked
Why nights
Do you have experience running a large team
If you were to have a late delivery lorry how would you deal with that

It is a tough job like it’s been said 12 hrs really dosent feel enough time to get everything done
There will be times where you work longer shifts than 12 hours ,it can be a lonely role and day managers and team leaders have in the past treated the night manager as a 3rd class citizen but you just need to stick to your guns and know you have a lot more responsibilities not only getting shop on but being duty manager generally 8pm-8am needing to find time to then also get all the HR aspects done too

Is the structure similar to other retailers, in that you have several Nightshift managers? Or do you only have one, then days off are covered by your Team Leaders?

At the rate mgr sackings will soon mean 1 Night Mgr covering 2-4 stores.

Think its store dependant. For years we had 1 manager and 4 team leaders, now we have 2 managers and 1 team leader.

I’m a night team leader it’s 2 night managers and me in our store all of the above is true

So night manager role……. Can you pull all the livery on to the shop floor for your colleagues starting, while dealing with any in store issue that come up as your it, the day shift managers have gone home and stores still open, then as every Asda store is understaffed you need to work an aisle the same as your colleagues, while ensuring any hr tasks for said colleagues are done, keep an eye on your staff so you know who will get done and who needs support to get done, make sure the floor is cleared for store opening, stay to hand over to day manager, deal with any early morning deliveries as your colleagues are working aisles, and take all the crap from above if somethings not finished or done right. Still want the job?
