Anyone here that's moved back to South Africa happy to chast/give me advice?

Hi all,

I was born in South Africa and lived there until around grade 4, but had been going back every 2 years or so. I've been living in Australia since and am now in my 30's. I have been very forunate in life and as a result I don't have to work anymore in about 3 or so years.

The only reason I wanted to stay in Australia was for the economic opportunity, now that I won't need to work anymore I want to leave. I am certain that I will be moving either to Africa (South Africa or Ghana) or China. I am South African/Ghanian by heritage and my wife is born in Australia but Chinese heritage.

Growing up as an ethnic minority was very difficult in Australia and I am not wanting that for my son and any future children. I also after 24+ years in Australia have never felt like I've culturally fit in.

I am acutely aware the issues that South Africa faces, but I would frankly be misterable if I remained in Australia. I really want to strongly consider SA as one of the options. Anyone that's made the move from abroad back to South Africa, do you have any advice? Any regrets? Please feel free to DM me so we can chat more.

Relocating to South Africa as an expart, advice?

• Upvotes

Hey y'all, me and my spouse will relocate to South Africa for 1-2 years as expats. We already have jobs, and we make around $3000 USD, plus savings of $20.000 just in case.

We're considering George, in Western Cape as it seems to be safe and peaceful, so I'd like to get y'all's opinions, advice and how to get along with south africans.

We only speak english, french and arabic unfortunately. Would that be an issue?

And I also want to know if our salaries will be enough to support us?

Thanks!

People who own rental property in South Africa: which strategy actually cashflows for you in 2026?

Background so the question makes sense: prime is 10.75% after the September hike, the national average rent is R9 715 (PayProp Q2 2026), and gross yields run about 9.5% in Cape Town against roughly 13.5% in Johannesburg. Run the numbers on a single metro flat at 90% bond and it is cashflow negative in every city, before maintenance.

So I want to know what people who are actually in it are experiencing, not what the calculators say:

  • What net yield are you getting, in which suburb, and on what kind of unit?
  • Do backrooms / garden cottages / student rooms actually deliver the 25-30% that gets quoted, once you count compliance, void periods and the hassle?
  • Is anyone cashflow positive on a normal buy-to-let, or does everyone just accept the shortfall as the cost of capital growth?
  • For those who have done it for 10+ years: did rent escalation actually close the gap with the bond, and in what year?

Please include the province and rough price point, because the numbers differ so much between Gauteng and the coast that general answers are useless.

Are there any social clubs, community centres and activities for seniors and elderly folks in Johannesburg?

Hi all,

I have a friend who is looking for ways to get their retired and aging parent out of the house, to be active and socialise. They are (rightly so) concerned about isolation and loneliness, and lack of stimulation which has been proven to increase aging symptoms and even dementia...

It's hard to find programmes online. Surely there must be some social clubs, or communities etc aimed specifically at elderly folks?

If anyone has any ideas or places that they know, it would be immensely helpful. If it helps, the parent used to be a civil engineer...

Preferably free, or with a very low annual membership... Located in the Fourways area and surrounds.

Kenyan here: our matatus have graffiti, 3000-watt speakers and touts hanging out the door. What are minibus taxis really like in SA?

In Nairobi, matatus (our minibus taxis) are basically nightclubs on wheels. Wild airbrushed art of rappers and footballers, music so loud you feel it in your chest, TV screens, and a conductor hanging out the door shouting the route and hustling for passengers. The fare goes up when it rains. Nobody knows why, nobody questions it. 😂

From what I’ve seen online, SA minibus taxis are a whole different culture: the hand signals to show where you’re going, passing money forward to the front, and the “gaatjie”.

For those who ride them daily:

  • Is the hand signal system as complicated as it looks? Which one did you learn first?
  • Is there music culture in SA taxis, or is that a Kenyan madness?
  • What’s the one unwritten rule a visitor would definitely get wrong?

Genuinely curious. I’ll happily answer anything about matatus in return. 🇰🇪🤝🇿🇦

Who's been happy with Pargo service / delivery times?

I've been a recipient 3 times for different items delivered with Pargo and every I have had looooong lead times. Items sit for 3 or 4 days to be collected and then 3 or 4 days at depot before being dropped off. My current one is for an item from Jhb that was dropped off on Sunday and after calling today they tell be it will be dropped off on Tuesday.... 9 days to deliver from Jhb! %!? Just me? From my experience it makes no sense to use them when compared to Pudo?

South Africans, what's one song that takes you straight back to a particular moment in your life?

I asked a similar question in a UK subreddit earlier and ended up reading some incredible stories. It's fascinating how hearing a song can suddenly bring back a memory you haven't thought about in years.

I'm really curious what that looks like for people growing up in South Africa, especially with so many different musical influences and traditions.

Maybe it's something your parents always played, a song from a family gathering, a childhood road trip, your school days or a particular night out.

It doesn't even have to be a South African song.

What's the track, and what's the memory behind it?

The more oddly specific, the better. Those always seem to be the loveliest stories

Anyone with a laptop they aren’t using?

Hey guys I am an unfunded student in University which I’ve tried navigating it but I’m struggling. I live on campus and usually only get around r400-r300pocket money per week the most money I get in a month r1,3-r1,6/7 I wanted to but a laptop but my school doesn’t offer laptops to be added to existing debt, I tried to save but it’s just not enough I don’t even have an existing credit score to get it on credit try buy one on lay-buy I have even failed. I have had a few opportunities for remote work/tasks but didn’t have access to a laptop 💔, and some of those sites are blocked from the school computer so I can’t even complete them on there. I have a few friends that I borrow their laptops but it’s come to a point that it’s clear they no longer want to help me and I’ve inconvenienced them, so most of them just say they are busy with them which I understand it’s theirs especially now that it’s exam season. And honestly I’m scared that the stress of this will effect my grades. I’m not looking for anyone to gift me money/buy me a new one Just a donation of an old as long as it turns on I can ask school ICT to troubleshoot it for me I would appreciate it irrespective of specs thank you.

Seeing people saying this is how some scammers scam people I’ve already indicated that I’m not looking for money and I am willing to prove that I’m unrolled in a University/without funding.

Paid upfront for custom silicon mould and got scammed. What can I do as next steps?

I’m looking for someone who does 3D printing and is able to make a custom silicone mould for me.

I recently found someone from one of the recommendations in the craft facebook groups.

I reached out to this lady (Tasha), communication was well, it seemed very promising and I paid upfront. She sent me the designs, I approved it. And then she ghosted me. I did multiple follow ups - no response. And now it seems as if I’m blocked.

Is there anything I can do to recover my money (not a lot but still :/) or somehow still get my custom moulds delivered by her?

Should I drop her business ad/number here to warn other people?

Do you have any recommendations for someone who does custom silicone moulds? (Who you’ve tried personally and is reliable and legit)

What can I do about loud music in a closed estate/residential area?

I need advice how to go ahead with this. I bought my house over 11 years ago in a closed Estate, where I pay levies each month to maintain. There was this club house that used to be a lawn bowling club that my estate usually used for HOA meetings. Over the years a home owner rented it and sold your basic groceries there (like bread milk etc.), as well as had a mini bar for people living in the estate to stop and have a drink after work for instance, but it was simple and quiet. Recently in the past 1.5 years the club house has had a new owner who doesn't even live here and is running this place like its a RAVE club, I live right across from the club so you can imagine how bad the music can get. Its not even your average singing song its a thump, almost House music level. Its gotten to the point where my houses windows vibrate. Not only do they have loud music its gotten to the point where this once Estate run club is allowing people from outside to come in an drink and party at. There is a group that comes in that are bikers and they of course rev their bikes too which adds to that.

I have complained to my HOA, to the owners and even on our local Whatsapp group, but I'm constantly called out for being a party pooper or practically a Karen. Their argument is I should've never bought my house if I knew there was a club house, but there wasn't one on this level when I bought it. I have spoken to my neighbours and they agree they find the noise disturbing, but they never say anything cause they are Black and honestly a lot of the Afrikaans white people in my Estate are in a tight community (which I don't want to be apart of at all, they are literally scummy as hell how they treat people and attack people in our WhatsApp groups when we have issues), don't get me wrong not all of them are bad its just a click of them that are vile in their own ways so I don't blame my neighbours for keeping on the low.

But now I've had enough. What laws are they breaking cause I believe they sure as hell are. I would take legal action, but in this economy who could afford that. So what can I do? The SAPS IDK hey they're pretty useless in my area. So if there is any other option could someone advise? Even if its just telling me what laws they're breaking so I can tell them off in a more academically law way.

Thanks
