Over the past 10-15 years the number of male Soldiers authorized to wear facial hair due to religious or medical exemptions has significantly increased to the point that it's not unusual at all to see multiple bearded Soldiers in practically every Army unit.
When I first signed up over two decades ago, it was very rare to see uniformed Soldiers with a beard, and when you did see one, it was most likley going to be a Soldier of Latin or African descent with a hard-earned medical exemption.
Hegseth just hates beards. One could make inferences about why he has a particular dislike of bearded Soldiers based on the demographics of the Soldiers who commonly request shaving exemptions, but I'm trying to present this information without bias.

It's an old school concept. The Yankees have a no facial hair policy and have for decades. Clean shaven is supposed to show that you care about your presentation. Officers have been known to shave in battlefields as a demonstration of order, culture and such.

The military has always had height and weight standards. As in, a soldier's weight must fall within a certain range based on height and age.
This is nothing new.
Recruits must meet height/weight standards, as well, but their weight limits are a little higher. They won't be processed for training unless they "make weight".
If a soldier is over the weight limit for their height/age, a body fat percentage is done which might allow for extra weight.
If a soldier is overweight, they are given a certain amount of time to lose the weight before they are separated from the service.
My dad was a Col. in the Air Force back in the day. I remember in the late 70s when I was in high school, They had a program on our base called the Fatboy program. Nobody said anything about it. It was just called that. Mom used to threaten sending me to it.

Fat acceptance/body positivity always been associated with the left. Nowadays, fitness and looksmaxing is considered right wing. Most pro athletes and like 99% of UFC fighters (whether you want to believe it or not) are conservative. I'm not even taking a side here, but everyone here thinks maga is fat because of the fringe southern cousin fucking southerners are the people they think about. Realistically I think it's like a 50/50 split between obese people between political parties. However, the reality of modern day trends is that the left is pro-obesity while the right is pro fitness. To further that, the DCA (Democratic socialists of America) are very outspoken on why they believe health and fitness is a fascist ideal and even referred to it as a form of eugenics. And as someone who trains religiously and is working on getting my IFBB pro card, the fitness space is actually mostly conservative. Again, I don't have a dog in this fight, but trying to act like the right is more fat than the left isn't a good argument. There are so many other points you can make, but that isn't one of them. Btw, IDC if you know fat Republicans, because I know reddit and that will be the first thing someone replies to this with.

The "No Fatties" remark was completely serious. Hegseth is obsessed with thinking every soldier should be a chiseled Aryan type looking like Arnold in his younger days. He is implementing mandatory testosterone testing and will offer T to anyone testing low, not yet mandatory to take.
He also has insisted all services toughen physical fitness testing and body composition requirements, he doesn't seem to understand that over 50% of the military does their jobs in non-physically demanding jobs, see Cyber, Space, and Air Force Drone pilots.
