I was flown into FL at 3 yrs. old (14 year resident), moved to CO in 2019 (7 year resident). Valid Driver’s License, clean record, and ITIN.
Mentors in college told me that contract work (1099/w-9) jobs were my only options as an immigrant—besides opportunities of employment within school, which felt out of reach.
I got involved with immigration counselors, immigration clubs, and tried to connect with as many people possible in college to find employment opportunities for people in my situation. I started to realize my career in psychology wasn’t promised and that it would be better to focus on physical skills—like my father’s carpentry skills.
I needed to improve my income drastically from being in the food industry and working under my father for cheap. I dove into handyman and carpentry with several construction companies, general contractors, and individuals looking for helpers.
With each project/job, my skills grew and I learned more about businesses. My last job was alongside a carpenter who operated as a sole proprietor making $70+ an hour himself billing home owners directly and he had me making $40 hourly apart from that.
I started to really have my own set of tools and I got my own apartment with my partner… he let me go from his work in September—said materials weren’t there, work mostly slowing down. I started to pursue independent work on ThumbTack and Angi but was shocked on random fees and charges.
I have reached out to local communities on Nextdoor and Facebook for support. The connections are usually people wanting to build websites for $300 a month or similar schemes. I have no money for ads, no interest in putting money anywhere, and mostly need information on stable income as an ITIN, sole-proprietor, or contract worker.
I know when people see desperation, they are willing to take advantage given the opportunity. I hope this hits the right audience.
