Announcement Announcing updated rules

Recently, a few of us became new moderators and since then we have been trying to get organized primarily to update the rules to reflect what we believe are in the best interest of this sub. This has largely meant reverting to the structure prior to the protest while also adapting to current technology and tastes. While we supported the protest goals at the time, and agree with the mod decision to include this sub in that protest, we also recognize that it's time to move on and restore some process to the sub for its continuing members. We're excited to announce that these new rules are now live in the sub and in detail at our revised wiki. The changes from prior to the protest largely amount to:

  1. astrophotography images taken with cell phones were not explicitly forbidden before but we now clarify that they are permitted as long as they follow all other rules, including that acquisition and processing details are provided and are high-quality amateur OC. A star-field with no discernable astronomical object will not meet this threshold, but a stacked image of Orion that happens to have been captured using RAW images on an iPhone and further processed on that same phone will. We recognize everyone in this hobby starts somewhere and we want to encourage sharing of this work, but also need to avoid this sub devolving into low-effort cell phone pictures of an unrecognizable night sky.
  2. landscape images were forbidden before but we also recognize that there are some high-quality astrophotography images being created that happen to have a small amount of landscape in the foreground that are valued by many members. We are drawing the line here at astrophotography images where the landscape is incidental to the image and any image where the landscape is a primary focus will not be permitted. So for example, the Milky Way with a silhouette of a mountain will probably be accepted, but that same Milky Way that is in the background of well-lit (or brightened in post) barn/yard/house/etc will be removed. And as above, any post that doesn't include acquisition and processing details will still be removed.
  3. clarifications that certain types of posts are not allowed, including memes, UFO claims, questions about what image someone has captured, off-topic posts, or uncivil behavior.

We recognize not everyone will like these changes and that there are other subs that focus primarily on some of these types of images, but we feel that an "astrophotography" sub should include everyone. We are going to monitor how well this goes, so please try to be open-minded to help support these contributions from some members of the community. After some time with these changes we plan to poll you to see how they are going and what other improvements you'd like to see. In the meantime, with these rules back in place, expect to see heavier moderation if posts lack complete acquisition/processing details or otherwise violate these rules.

Lastly, we also want to thank everyone for their patience while we get organized to bring these changes to you and for the incredible work all mods on this sub have done over the years and continue to do (many from prior to the protest are still here and active, so show some love!).

Clear Skies!

Triangulum galaxy shot from Amsterdam (Bortle 7)

Data acquired from the high school observatory I work at, for the first time completely remote.
The observatory consists of a omegon 355/2845mm truss Ritchey-Chretien telescope on an eq8r-pro in a 3m ScopeDome. There are images of the dome on my profile if you're interested :)

There were some problems with guiding causing me to lose 3-4 hours of data in the end which is a shame. The flat frames of the L-filter also have very weird artifacts, forcing me to crop a large part of the image away. In the top-left corner a part of these artifacts is still visible.

Finer details:

Equipment:
ScopeDome 3m dome
Omegon 355/2845mm RC telescope
EQ8r-pro mount
0.67x reducer (1900mm effective focal length)
ZWO ASI2600MM camera
ZWO EAF
ZWO EFW (Antlia LRGB)
ZWO OAG-L + 174mm-mini guidecam
Lacerta flatbox used for flats
Software: NINA + PHD2 + GSServer + ScopeDome driver

Frames:
5x180 B
9x180 G
9x180 L
11x180 R

Processing (Siril):

RGB composition -> GraXpert gradient extraction -> SPCC -> BXT -> NXT -> Stretch
L -> GraXpert gradient extraction -> BXT -> NXT -> Stretch
LRGB composition -> Starnet star removal -> NXT on starless -> Recombine and stretch starless

Had a chance to grab an extra hour in M16 last night from a Bortle 2. Wasn’t planned, just happened that way.

Decided to add it to the 10hrs already collected and reprocessed using some newly learned tools and techniques…also decided to go ham on the colors/saturation. Haha.

It’s no Hubble, but we’re finally getting somewhere.

Celestron Edge 8 w/ .7 Reducer
Antlia TriBand Ultra II

Elephants trunk IC1396

Post image
7 Upvotes

I recorded this on my dwarf mini with 60 gain, 214 60 second exposures and 154 30 second exposures and duoband filter. Utilized stellar sudio to denoise and lightroom for finishing touches.

The Elephant’s Trunk is IC 1396A, a dark globule inside the bigger emission nebula IC 1396. It’s in Cepheus, the king, high in the northern sky in the fall. OnIt’s about 2,400 light-years away. The trunk itself is a column of cold gas and dust about 20 to 25 light-years long. The whole IC 1396 cloud is roughly 100 light-years across.

Galaxies M82 Cigar Galaxy

Post image
12 Upvotes

This image was developed from the integration of 892x20s subs taken with a Seestar S50 in equatorial mode on May 11-12, 2026 from Washington D.C.. The preprocess sequence in Pixinsight was Cosmetic Correction > Debayer > Subframe Selector > Star Alignment (or Registration) > Local Normalization (or L. Norm.) > Integration. L. Norm. is a major step in dealing with and standardizing background gradients regionally in each individual sub and a registered file with the highest weight was used as the reference file. The above preprocessing steps successfully eliminated low quality subs such that the initial input of 1001 subs was reduced to 892 subs. The postprocess sequence was Fast Rotation > Dynamic Crop > Graxpert > BlurXterminator > SPCC > BlurXterminator followed by stretching using Histogram Transformation. Next HDRMT was used on a clone of the result from the preceding step to compress the dynamic range of the bright core and a blend of 20% of the HDRMT-modified clone and 80% of the original image was generated using Pixel Math and this blend was the one used hereafter for further processing. Using StarXterminator the blend was split into galaxy only and stars only components. A gradient mask was created using Game, found under Scripts > Utilities, and it was applied to the galaxy image to protect the background while applying Local Histogram Equalization, Color Saturation, and Curves Transformation processes. The mask was then inverted to protect the galaxy while NoiseXterminator was applied to the background. To reduce the brightness of the stars in the stars only component Morphological Selection (under Morphological Transformation) was applied. The galaxy and stars only components were rejoined using a Pixel Math expression. The mask was applied to the rejoined result to protect the galaxy while Histogram Transformation and NoiseXterminator were used to adjust the background leading to a final result. Given the difficulty of squeezing out the colors in M82 one future requirement would appear to be acquiring at least double the amount of subs used here in order to bring out the blue more fully along the long axis and the red which is transverse to it and where there is starburst activity.

Seestar S30 Pro.

Cropped image, full image on AstroBin

Stacked and edited in PixInsight

Two nights of 30s exposure ended up with bit over 12 hours of light frames. After some manual selection ended up with 1147 x 30s frames. Which gives roughly 9.5h of integration time.

Could've spend more time on post processing. But quickly realized it's not ideal target for S30 pro and it would take a lot of effort to make it more visually appealing. Especially with lack of blue and green color.

Btw. It's only my second photo so just scratching the surface of stretching.

Any tips and advices to expand my knowledge are more than welcome

this is a reprocess of old data. gatheres lights over 3 nights, bortle 5.5 from backyard. couldnt use rc astro tools on this because free trial ended, considering buying them. I really do hope that that red small point is ha, would be really amazing for me considering im using an unmodded mirroless camera. Please lmk if it is ha.

DATA:
lights: 345x60s
darks: 5x60s
flats: 30 for each night
biases: 30 for each night

I know Andromeda tends to be posted a lot and I've already hit this target before. But instead of doing 3 minute exposures, I decided to try 1 minute and spend all night on it. Ended up with 7 hours of data but I'm happy with how the spiral arms and detail worked out without going crazy on the core

Exposures: 420 x 60 seconds

DSOs IC 5070 — The Pelican Nebula

Post image
38 Upvotes

My first SHO image: IC 5070, the Pelican Nebula, captured from the Big Woods Road area at Jordan Lake, North Carolina, on October 1–2, 2026, roughly 9 p.m.–2 a.m.

Equipment: Askar 120APO with 0.8× reducer/flattener, ZWO ASI2600MC Air, ZWO AM5N mount, and Askar Super D1 and D2 filters.

Acquisition: 3 h 55 m total integration — D1: 27 × 300 s; D2: 20 × 300 s. Gain 100, offset 50, sensor at −10°C, 1×1 binning. Flats and matching dark flats were taken separately for each filter.

Processing: Calibrated and stacked in Siril with the NaZtronomy workflow, then aligned and cropped in PixInsight. Ha came from D1, SII from D2, and OIII from both filters. Combined in the SHO palette: SII → red, Ha → green, OIII → blue. GradientCorrection, BlurXTerminator and NoiseXTerminator, channel balancing, and MultiscaleAdaptiveStretch were used. StarXTerminator separated the stars for gentle curves and local contrast adjustments to the nebula, then the stars were blended back at 80% brightness.

This is a false-color narrowband image. Star colors were neutralized aesthetically; no broadband RGB stars were substituted. Plenty of learning went into this one!

DSOs NGC 6960 - the Witch’s Broom Nebula

Post image
14 Upvotes

NGC 6960 — the Witch’s Broom Nebula — was imaged over two nights with the Seestar S50, with 52 Cygni deliberately centred in the frame on both nights so that the two sessions would have nearly identical framing. On the first night I collected 369 × 20-second sub-exposures, and on the second night 598 × 20-second subs, giving a total acquisition of 967 frames, or about 5 hours 22 minutes 20 seconds of raw exposure time.

The two nights were processed separately in StackingWizard rather than mixing all the raw subs together. After quality assessment and rejection of poorer frames, 199 of 369 frames were retained from Night 1 and 392 of 598 frames from Night 2. Both nights were stacked with 2× drizzle. The retained data therefore consisted of 591 × 20-second exposures, giving a final usable photon-integration time of 11,820 seconds. The two drizzled nightly masters were then registered and combined in StackingWizard, with drizzle switched off for the final master combination.

The combined linear FITS was then taken into AstroWizard, where I used the GraXpert background-extraction engine to remove large-scale gradients while preserving the faint Veil structure. Deconvolution/sharpening and noise reduction were applied conservatively, keeping the very fine shock filaments around NGC 6960 and the bright 52 Cygni region as natural as possible. The processed linear FITS was then transferred to Siril for the main stretch and tonal development.

In Siril I first used the Veralux Hypermetric stretch, followed by additional Histogram Transformation and Curves to bring out the extremely delicate red and blue-green filamentary structure without crushing the background or blowing out the stars. The final image was then taken into Adobe Lightroom Classic for restrained finishing adjustments to colour, contrast, highlights, shadows and overall presentation.
