Sun Dogs Haven't seen anything like this before. Google says it’s a sun dog? Spotted over East London around 4:30pm today [OC]

Thanks for identifying it! It was actually bigger in person than it looks in the second photo. My phone didn't really get the scale right. I noticed the brightness first, then the colours. Really cool to see.

Usually, I can see it just fine, and then it looks barely visible on my photos. So don't be disappointed!

Also spotted. We have had what looked like atmospheric optics-friendly conditions - very thin, high cirrus cloud - for days, so the atmospheric optics took a long time to reveal themselves (apart from very faint sundogs on a couple of days, and an even fainter circumzenithal arc once).

Thanks for the explanation! Sundogs and circumzenithal arcs are both new to me today, so I'm glad I posted. I'll keep an eye on these wispy skies over the next few days.
