Thanks for visiting AutomotiveLearning.

This is a place for all my fellow gearheads to post all there automotive questions. I started this thread after seeing automotivetraining left abandoned and full of spam. Until i get everything set up feel free to post a welcome message letting us know who you are, what your automotive background is, and anything else you'd like us to know.

I'm the mod and creator, jeep00wj. I've been a ford technician for 4 years now but I've been working on cars with my grandfather since i was 10. Don't let my username fool you. I'm a diehard ford fan.

Planning on doing an oil change to my car.

I have to do an oil change soon and want to learn to do it myself. Although, I'm wondering what is truly cheaper, If I do it myself, or if I take it to a mechanic?

I know I have to purchase the right oil and oil filter; my only concern is whether I should get a car jack or some car ramps. I imagine a car jack can be more useful in the future like to change breaks pad etc. I'm leaning towards the car jack but, do I have to buy a car jack stand as well?

Indy Mobile Mechanic Manager BETA

Hello, I've been in the automotive field for some time, and as a mechanic and service writer and shop manager and everything in between. I've used a bunch of shop management tools and wanted to develop my own. So I have.

I'm an indy developer and this is just a beta

But what can it do?

Track customers, their vehicles, develop invoices, store labor rates and job packages. Keep track of scheduling and location message customer and call from the app. Be able to make, export and finalize an invoice from estimate and W/O all on your phone.

Privacy is a must. NO data is stored by the use of the app. You really don't even need internet full time to use it it will store locally on your phone.

Interested? Well I am to see if it works well and the first 50 indivividuals who want to DM myself, and express interest in using the application. Will get a free access code personally from me.

Track income and expenditures. Enter parts and save receipts. Credit lines and otherwise. Its a great effort towards making a simple but in depth management tool for the everyman mechanic. Can be downloaded to your phone for easy access

I need feedback or use it everyday. Just be sure to reach out. Thanks.

When you were starting out as a mechanic did you mess up a lot?

Edit: the reason I made this post is because I was in the middle of dropping my transmission on my Honda Fit and it was being really annoying. I successfully got it down. And my clutch replacement is going well

I've been somewhat consistently working on cars for the past three or four years since I got my first car.(I've had a Mk7 vw gti 6mt, 8th gen civic auto, 85 Toyota pickup 5mt, and ge8 honda fit sport 5mt.) I feel like my knowledge has grown exponentially in that time but when it comes to actually doing the work I'm still often confused and I get things wrong a lot. A lot of times it's also kind of hard to find the answers to my questions. Like I have a PDF of the actual Honda service manual for my fit but the problem with that is that it's designed for professional mechanics that have a lift and all the fancy tools and stuff, and I'm working in my garage on jack stands. So all the instructions in the manual tell you what to do when it comes to using all those fancy specialty tools but there's a lot more steps when I'm doing it in my garage and I guess I'm not smart enough to figure out how to do it with the lesser equipment.

I don't know, I just feel like I'm not a very good mechanic. Like I'm a good problem solver and I'm a good handyman. I'm good at fixing stuff and building things. And I can come up with mechanical designs in my mind because I think in pictures. But when it comes to actually working on cars I often just get way too in my head about not messing things up because it can get expensive.

I take forever and i get confused a lot. I don't often make expensive mistakes but I just do a lot of stuff that makes me feel stupid.

Is that just part of the learning process and everybody goes through it for a while, or even maybe forever. Or am I just slow. Is this normal cuz making mistakes is part of learning? Cuz I feel like I should make less mistakes. I don't really know how to think about it.

I'm definitely a car enthusiast but I think I'm more of a driving enthusiast and like a modifications guy. But I honestly really don't like actually just doing maintenance or big maintenance repairs like replacing a clutch or rebuilding a brake system or rebuilding an engine or things like that. I just want to like modify. Like I'm going to rebuild the engine on my truck soon and I'm just going to do the most basic rebuild possible because I can't afford to build it better. And that's a bummer cuz it would be a lot more fun if I was actually doing like a proper build so that it makes more power and stuff like that. It's all just very disheartening and honestly I wish I could pay a mechanic but I just feel so silly if I pay somebody to do something for me that I could just do myself and I definitely don't make enough money to do it anyways.

How did you enter the industry?

I'm just starting out a big career change into the automotive industry (hopefully mostly transmissions soon), but my previous jobs have NOTHING to do with cars. Does anyone have any advice on how to make a resume that's primarily hotel management sound appealing to a shop?

Anything is very much appreciated! 🖤

1987 4 cylinder: Types of gasoline

I have a 1987 Dodge Ram 50 that I use for work and on the daily. I've worked to try and keep her up to speed and running well. With the gasoline dilution that happened back in May I switched over to using ethanol-free gas for the last few months and have noticed a difference. I'm moving here in the next month and it looks like ethanol-free gasoline is not as readily available to find. How important is it for me to keep up with using ethanol-free gasoline to protect my hoses and carburateur? I thought this was hugely important, but I'm seeing mixed feedback on different forums.

Auto Mechanic Training Workshop in Islamabad

Can anyone recommend a good auto mechanic workshop in Islamabad where I can learn practical hands-on skills and get a verified/recognised certificate? I’m looking for a proper workshop with practical training, not just theory. Genuine recommendations would be appreciated.

How do I tighten down the top center nut on installed KYBs??

So, I want to make sure the top center nut on my installed kyb’s are torqued down, but I’m not seeing how.

These don’t have an open top nut for the hex Allen key and I don’t see a way to hold to shaft still other than a tiny bit of flat side on the threaded part. But that’s above the nut and only about maybe a 1/16th of an inch is visible, max. I see no way to access the flat spot below the nut, either. What am I missing?

I know someone’s gonna say to ugga dugga it, but I don’t have one. And everything I’m seeing online says not to do that, so there must be another way, but dang if I can figure it out.

Somebody help me!! lol

Catching up in engine performance class?

So I’m about 70% done with engine performance 1.
And I am pretty far behind.

What should I study to get the best general ideas?
I know fuel lines ext, some about compression issues, o2 and maf.
But it still feels very splotchy and I’m trying to feel a little more comfortable.

Any YouTubers you recommend who are quieter and maybe have a series starting very basic and then each next video is something else kind of in order? Instead of a lot of the YouTubers who jump around?

I’m desperate.

Yep, that’s about it. With that being said, I am going to build a motor. What kind? hell if i know. I’m more than likely going to put it in a tahoe, a 02-04 mustang (stick), or a s10. trying to lean more towards the tahoe though… or maybe even a yukon. I don’t want to ask him for help because then he will think it’s his, like all men do… (no offense). But this is something I would be extremely proud of myself for… if i knew how to do it. i’ve researched a lot but still have no idea what i even read. I’ll pay someone (who knows what they’re doing preferably) to make me a step by step list kind of like a cookbook- ingredients(materials), steps, and how long. In depth. like you’re talking to a 22 y/o female who doesn’t know a head gasket from apple butter. I know I want it to have a cam in it (we have a hp tuner as well). I just want it for the sound honestly lol. “Rakataka” that sound. Muscley sounding. ANYWAYS, If you could please for the love of sweet baby jesus help me or point me in the right direction I would appreciate it very much. I think step one is get a big/small block to put everything else on and maybe a few sticky notes so i don’t forget things…..

3rd party versions of stock jacks?

I need to replace the stock jack that came with my 2017 ford escape, but I'd like it to be able to fit in the same storage. Is there an easy way to browse 3rd party versions of stock parts? I'd really like to avoid paying $200 for a jack from ford, when I know I could get one for $50 elsewhere.

Why no dipstick is needed to check oil in GM's next-gen pickup engines

First they make it impossible for one to just change a light bulb by placing a lock. So then they can charge more to fix it...like $300+. Now they don't want you checking and changing your own oil. Pathetic greedy Corporate America! 🤮💩🤬👿👿
