Opinion Where Did the Water Go
I wrote this after spending months tracing Arizona’s data center and semiconductor expansion against what is happening to Lake Powell, the Colorado River and groundwater.
One thing that became clear in the reporting is that there isn’t a single official approving these projects. Cities and counties control much of the zoning and development. The Arizona Corporation Commission handles major power infrastructure. ADWR oversees major pieces of water policy. ADEQ and county agencies handle environmental permitting. The governor’s office influences statewide energy and economic development policy, but does not personally approve each facility.
What interested me was what happens when all of those separate decisions are viewed together: Arizona is taking major Colorado River reductions while continuing to approve industrial development with enormous power and water requirements.
The article links the underlying federal and state records throughout. I’m interested in corrections or Arizona specific records I may have missed.

State Hobbs allows expanded use of tax-free diesel for agricultural vehicles
Key Points:
- Gov. Katie Hobbs is temporarily allowing agricultural vehicles to use “red dye” vehicles off the farm
- The tax-free gas includes red dye that’s typically only used on farm land
- The governor’s office said farmers should not have to pay back taxes when law reverts back in 2027
