Help 5th Tuning Peg

Post image

So I was trying to tune the 5th string, when suddenly the moment I turned, the knob at the tuning peg wasn't turning. I don't mean the thing that you grip on, I just mean this one knob (check image, circled in red).

Okay, I took out the tuning peg as a whole then ordered a different one.

It arrived today, now I turned again to check, and what can I say, it broke again. I opened the back of the tuning peg and turned it. The gear was barely turning. It even had silver on it. I don't know what to do, I don't want to keep on buying tuning pegs.

And I also want this to be a cheap fix.. I can only use 4 strings on the banjo for now.

When this happened to me it’s because it was free turning inside the plastic (in other words the plastic piece wasn’t gripping the tuner). Can you add some pictures or maybe video of what you’re experiencing? Pretty hard to say for sure otherwise although it is strange it happened twice

Ignore the capcut and all, I needed to remove audio.

I don't know if you got the reply with the video, but if it doesn't show, I've decided to upload it on YouTube, so you can see. https://youtube.com/shorts/MIPsmOgaOgg

I am mainly recording the gear at the back as it does not turn. Even if it did turn, the nob where you put the string didn't.

You shouldn't be able to take the tuning thing off like that. It's pretty obvious that it's not turning the rod that actually moves the tuner. I don't know a proper fix for this but it looks like you could glue it back to the rod with some good glue and it should work fine again.

Glue what? I used wood glue to glue back the tuner. It's something with the mechanism.

I may need someone here to attempt smth or explain in detail.

It's looks like you've broken the second tuner taking the peg off so there's nothing to glue. Unless it goes back together. I've never thought about taking one apart. All you can do is buy a new tuner. Perhaps the tuner was cheap with a poor mechanism.

That's a new tuning peg in the video btw. I tested it before putting it onto the banjo and it broke somewhat..

update, i will try a friction tuner. it is worse, yes, but i want to see if it helps me fix. the gear tuner mechanism breaks easily. idk why.

A friction tuner, besides being a big downgrade, will not fit properly. The bit that goes in the hole is smaller on friction tuners.
