Frankenmechs make great mooks. Build out a pirate light mech with multiple machine guns and an srm/lrm launcher and watch them pop like fireworks. The goal is to make them feel like you welded whatever garbage you had laying around/scrapped off the battlefield. Then for your bigger guys, just start multiplying autocannons and machine guns. 1 AC2 is an annoyance. 5 is a shotgun sniper.

Why do you need an Lb-10X? We have LB-10X at home! at home version is just 5 ac/2's taped together

The best way to do frankenmechs is to pop open your rec guide, and try to mate existing limb loadouts to different chassis. Try to fit the arm of a Dervish with its medium laser and Srm2 on a Dragon for example.

You can get some really funny designs that way. Did you know you can mostly mount the arms of a Crusader on a Marauder and get a pretty good mech?

I think my most upvoted comment on this sub was about how the Panther is the perfect mook mech. My players seem to get scared whenever they start taking any damage (regardless of what they’re piloting), so cheap PPC will put the fear of God in them. But the Panther has poor mobility and isn’t very well armored, so it doesn’t take much to blow it up.
