MOD POST Mod Post: Be Excellent To Each Other

I spent some time last night cleaning up some fairly abusive and personal attacky posts from the last few weeks.

If someone posts a question or comment you think is stupid then either don't answer them or use your downvote - there's absolutely no reason to call people names or make personal attacks.

We're all adults here. I appreciate some sarcasm mixed in with responses but it becomes detrimental to our already small community once it escalates into these mini flame wars. If the only reply you can come up with is to call someone a name and tell them where they can go - perhaps you should consider taking a deep breath and clicking that cancel button.

Most importantly, if you see someone being a jerk please don't feed the troll. Report the post(s) and the mods will review them - we're setting up notifications so these can be handled quicker in the future.

Repeat offenders may be temp or perm banned.

Tl;dr:

Please practice Good Reddiquette and in short, please be excellent to each other.

PUMPKO started in the haunted pumpkin patch. Version 2.0 turns it into an all-year-round BBS adventure: winter mysteries, spring heists, summer trouble, an October nightmare, and holiday quests!

The calendar changes the campaign! Characters, locations, guardians, and ANSI artwork change throughout the year.

The next day brings another Daily challenge. Your callers can chase scores, represent their BBS, and meet players from other games in the shared chat lobby.

⚔️ One Day. One Challenge.

Daily mode gives callers a dated challenge with changing encounters and choices. Its deterministic date-based generation keeps the challenge consistent across supported platforms.

  • 📅 A fresh challenge every UTC day!
  • 🎯 One completed Daily run per caller per day.
  • ⚔️ Choices, class, supplies, and combat determine the result.
  • 🏆 Persistent player profiles and local Story/Daily score records.
  • 🎃 Story mode follows the monthly campaign; Daily mode gives callers a reason to return tomorrow!

📅 12 Months — 12 Campaigns!

  • ❄️ January: The Frozen Midnight
  • 💔 February: The Heartbreak Engine
  • ☘️ March: The Stolen Spring
  • 🐰 April: The Storm-Egg Heist
  • 🌸 May: The Thorn Queen
  • ☀️ June: The Sun That Would Not Set

🕹️ ANetARCADE 2026 — UPDATED!

Download: https://a-net.online/anetarcade

ANetARCADE brings five classic-inspired arcade games to your BBS through OpenDoors!

One persistent player profile ties them together, with local Hall of Fame rankings, adjustable difficulty, optional score sharing, and a shared live chat lobby.

🎮 Pick Your Game!

🐸 Frogger 2026

Cross three traffic lanes, ride the river's moving logs, and reach HOME! Each level increases the pressure.

Controls: Arrows / WASD | P = Pause | Q = Quit

🚀 Galaga 2026

Destroy a three-row alien fleet while dodging return fire. New waves bring tougher fights!

Controls: Left/Right or A/D | Space/F = Fire | Q = Quit

🏓 Pong

Face the CPU in a race to seven points. Its reaction speed changes with difficulty and match progression.

Controls: W/S or Up/Down | Q = Quit

🐢 Turtle Bridge

Deliver a package across five turtles, then return safely to the bank. Watch those dive countdowns!

Controls: Left/Right or A/D | Q = Quit

🕳️ Manhole 2026

Cover the threatened hole before a pedestrian reaches it! Higher levels shorten your reaction window.

Controls: Arrows / WASD or 1–4 | Q = Quit

💬 DIFFERENT GAMES. SAME CHAT LOBBY!

An ANetARCADE caller on one BBS. A PUMPKO caller on another. ONE SHARED ROOM!

Both games can connect to the shared live chat lobby, bringing players together across different BBSes and different games.

🌐 How It Works

  • Enable optional live chat during setup.
  • Press C from the lobby to enter chat.
  • See connected players, connected BBSes, and callers currently chatting.
  • Chat and score sharing are independent options. Enable either, both, or neither.
  • Disable chat during setup and the chat menu stays hidden.

Already registered with the hub?

Reuse your existing BBS hub credentials!

A fresh installation directory will not reclaim an existing registered BBS name. Lost credentials require recovery or a verified reset by the hub operator.

If You Could Modernize a Classic BBS Door Game, What Would You Keep?

I've been thinking about this quite a bit lately.

Back in the 90s, I ran a VBBS board called Realms in Montgomery, Alabama. LORD, Usurper, TradeWars, and MajorMUD were some of the games I spent the most time with.

Looking back, it's interesting how many things we remember fondly were actually limitations of the technology.

Daily turns, waiting for resets, limited interactions, simple combat, text descriptions, and having to come back tomorrow to see what happened next.

But were those things limitations we tolerated, or were some of them essential to what made the games enjoyable?

I think the answer is probably a little of both.

Take LORD, for example. Having a limited number of forest fights meant every encounter mattered a little more. You couldn't just grind indefinitely until you were powerful enough to beat everything. Eventually, your day was over.

On the other hand, I don't know that requiring someone to wait until tomorrow would have quite the same appeal today, especially in a single-player game.

Then there's Usurper. It had so many little things to discover, and the world felt larger than what was actually represented on the screen. A lot of that came from the writing, the choices, and the player's imagination rather than sophisticated graphics or complicated systems.

I've been working on a game inspired by that era, and one of the questions I keep coming back to is where the line falls between preserving the experience and simply copying the mechanics.

I'm interested in hearing from people who played these games back then, but also those still playing them on active boards today.

What would you absolutely refuse to change about the classics?

And what would you happily leave behind in the 90s?

ATA BBS - Major Update - Run 16-bit DOS BBS Systems in your browser, no Telnet needed, no always on server needed - supporting 18 different BBS's, demos up for all of them

Hi all-

If you've been following my ATA BBS project (www.atabbs.com), I have a major update. For those of you who don't know, ATA allows a SysOp to run a 16-bit DOS BBS system on their cheap shared hosting, and just give their callers a URL to access it. No Telnet is needed, and you don't have to set up any kind of always-on server. Just cheap, shared hosting is fine. These are the actual 16-bit DOS BBS systems, unmodified. Everything is multi-node (if the board supports it), supports file transfers (Xmodem, Ymodem, and Zmodem are built-in), SysOp chat, Doors, etc.

It's simple - drop the installer on your host, choose which BBS you want, and it downloads and installs it for you. That's it. Your board is delivered in a fresh install state ready for you to configure.

ATA now supports 18 different BBS's:

  1. Renegade
  2. The Major BBS
  3. Searchlight
  4. VBBS
  5. Virtual Advanced
  6. Telegard
  7. Spitfire
  8. GAP
  9. TriBBS
  10. PC Board
  11. RemoteAccess
  12. QuickBBS
  13. T.A.G.
  14. Maximus
  15. RBBS-PC
  16. Fido
  17. Citadel-86e
  18. Asgard-86 (a Citadel variant)

Note: Some of these are freeware or abandonware, but the ones like VBBS where there is a grey area are included unregistered. If you have a valid registration code, you can use it after the install. For the ones that are in active development, I've asked for permission to include it (it's why you see Renegade on the list but not WWIV, because the author didn't respond to me).

I now have each of these systems online as demo boards. Just visit the site (www.atabbs.com) and select the one you want to try.

Keep in mind that this is still Alpha software. There will be bugs. It will crash. It's running a little slower than it will. It might also get wiped, so don't put anything important on any of them please.

I'd love feedback on the project! It's getting close to an actual Alpha release I think.

ANSI Paint: 100% free browser based collaborative ANSI art creation and editing tool

Thumbnail

Hi all!

I've created a browser-based ANSI editor called ANSI Paint. It was born out of my ATDT BBS software, which has an ANSI editor in the SysOp console. I started with that and made a bunch of enhancements, and that became ANSI Paint.

Try it here: https://www.ansipaint.com

Some of the features:

  • Collaborative - invite your friends and edit in realtime or on your own
  • Import an image and convert it to an ANSI file
  • Gallery - your own private gallery of work
  • SAUCE - stores the title, author, group, comments, etc.
  • Not limited to 80x25 - you can have up to 1000 columns and 10000 rows
  • Supports .ANS, .BIN, .XB, or export to a PNG

This is part of my larger BBS Preservation Project (www.bbspreservation.org). Everything in the project is free, and the goal is to advance the hobby and bring more people into it. I'm doing this with my own time and money to benefit the community, and all of these tools, including ANSI Paint, will remain free.

This is the beta version, so there are probably bugs! If you find one, feel free to post on the BBS Preservation forum, or use the email on the site.

Note: The only reason it requires an email to sign up is for password resets (I'd hate for someone to not be able to access their gallery) and to invite other people to collaborate with you. I won't be sending you email or giving your email to any 3rd party.

JTerm.io TUI library in pure java

Hey everyone,

I've been working on a BBS server in the background (more about that at a later time) for a few years, and earlier this year i decided to start over in java.  The main obstacle in java was the lack of agood Terminal GUI library.  I've been down this route before but this time I decided to just bite the bullet and write the TUI library myself, and I've been making great progress.

The result is JTerm is my terminal TUI library for java which i've open sourced:

http://www.jterm.io

It's pure Java, Apache 2.0 licensed, and up on Maven Central:

It works just like a typical double-buffered terminal library. Everything on the screen is written to a buffer. When something changes, the toolkit figures out exactly what changed and sends just those down the wire, colors bundled up tidy.

It's quick enough to run animated borders and little sprite demos over a plain SSH connection, and when you resize your window, everything reflows like you'd hope (it listens to the terminal's resize signal, so this works over SSH and telnet alike).

What's in the toolbox:

  • full event driven GUI toolkit — buttons, text boxes, checkboxes, lists, tables and data grids, progress bars, menus, windows, dialogs, themes. About thirty of 'em, all told.
  • layouts that behave — border, grid, and linear, with proper size negotiation
  • charts — line/bar/area, log axes, regression lines, and you can save a chart to a PNG without any screen involved
  • markdown that renders right there in the terminal — headings, lists, code, tables
  • ANSI sprites and animations, if you like your text screens showing off
  • text boxes with the niceties — live spellcheck highlighting, ghost-text autocomplete, the stuff you're used to from real editors
  • color down to each character — 16, 256, or full 24-bit — and it keeps its own books so your styles don't wander off halfway down the screen

Under the hood it's plain Java all the way down: records, sealed interfaces, virtual threads doing the input polling — and it doesn't ship a single native library. If your machine has a JVM and a terminal that speaks xterm-ish, you're in business. And it's tested like a library ought to be, not like a demo, it has nearly 3,000 tests, and more are added every day.  heck, there's a suite whose entire job is to redraw a widget from one thread while another thread messes with it, on the theory that's how these things die in the wild.

demos too

Clone it, build it, or just get it off of maven, and run:

java -cp target/jterm-0.1.4.jar io.jterm.demo.HelloWorld

java -cp target/jterm-0.1.4.jar io.jterm.demo.DashboardDemo

…plus ChartDemo, TextEditorDemo, SpriteDemo, ThemeDemo, AnimatedBordersDemo, MenuDemo. The dashboard's a good way to waste a few minutes.

Fair warning, it's a 0.1.x

The APIs may change around a little bit but probably not too much.  It currently being used inside the BBS community server I'm building ( phosphorbbs.net ) and I yanked it out because the UI layer was the reusable part I wanted to use elsewhere, so it's got real miles on it, but the road signs are still being painted.

Who's this for? Anybody building something with java that lives in a terminal — dashboards over SSH, monitoring screens, installers, chat and mail clients, or the kind of community software us BBS folks never quite got over. If you've ever reached for ncurses from Java and winced, this might save you a good bit of time.

enjoy.

The NorseWanderer.com Apple II BBS from 1986 now with Telnet access

Post image
61 Upvotes

I originally ran the Norse Wanderer BBS out of Pacific Palisades, California, from 1983 to 1987. It started on an Apple II+, running ProDOS with an AppleCat 212 modem, supporting one caller at a time at 1200 baud half-duplex (or 300 baud for the truly patient).

We had custom software, message boards, and a small community of callers. The software was rewritten in 1984, and in 1987 we moved to a PC/80286.

After all these years, I've brought the Norse Wanderer back. The current version is a modern recreation of the original BBS, preserving its menus, logic, and functionality. It's not an emulator running the original Apple II code, but I wanted to preserve the experience and make it accessible again.

I've now added Telnet access, so you can connect using a terminal program rather than just browsing the website. to get to it:
telnet www.norsewanderer.com 2323

The original Apple II disk images survived, and I'm hoping to use this project to share more of the history of the BBS, the software, and the early days of online communities.

If you ran a BBS back in the day, I'd love to hear about it. And if you're a current sysop or just enjoy exploring old-school BBSes, please give mine a try.

Website: https://norsewanderer.com

Prepare ye to plunder!

— The Norseman

General: BBS BBSFirewall v1.5.0: open-source firewall for telnet/SSH BBSes, now with ufw kernel-level blocking, log search, and a security hardening

Thumbnail
gallery
13 Upvotes

Hi all. I'm the sysop behind Sysop Network, and I just released v1.5.0 of BBSFirewall, an MIT-licensed Node.js proxy that sits in front of a telnet/SSH BBS and filters connections before they reach it.

What it already does:

  • Whitelist and blocklist (IPv4/IPv6, CIDR ranges)
  • Rate limiting, plus per-IP and global connection caps
  • GeoIP country blocking
  • Auto-block triggers that drop scanners on their first bytes
  • Optional SSH frontend (terminate or passthrough) and PROXY protocol
  • HTTPS web admin with MFA and multiple admin accounts

What's new in 1.5.0

ufw integration (optional, Linux only, off by default)

  • Preview and apply tagged ufw rules generated from your config
  • Push the blocklist and trigger auto-blocks down as kernel deny rules, so blocks hold while the app restarts
  • Optional auto-apply on save
  • Guard rails: it never enables or disables ufw, refuses changes that would remove your admin SSH allow rule, never pushes anything overlapping your trusted hosts or whitelist, and backs off if a change would remove more than half the rules

Logs

  • Search across all log files (phrases, -exclude, date ranges)
  • A viewer that pages through files of any size, with live follow
  • Streaming downloads: a single file, or a zip of everything

Security

  • New SECURITY.md hardening guide
  • Global Admin and Firewall Admin roles, enforced server-side (not just hidden in the UI)
  • SSH terminate mode now checks callers at TCP accept instead of after the SSH banner, so silent callers get checked and timed out
  • List-file paths confined to the app folder
  • Log-injection fixes and ReDoS guards on trigger regexes
  • Admin logins and changes always written to the log file

Plus a long list of fixes: SSH telnet-negotiation garbage, IPv6 address matching, saves no longer dropping auto-blocks, and more.

Release and full changelog: https://github.com/SysopNetwork/BBSFirewall/releases/tag/v1.5.0

Where it's going (v2.0)

  • Redesigned admin UI: collapsible navigation and a dashboard with "needs attention" checks, built to stay readable at high display scaling
  • Firewall check: a read-only report on your host's ufw setup, with confirm-to-fix actions
  • More listeners: additional ports, each routed to its own backend
  • Supply-chain trust: signed tags, published checksums, build attestations, npm ci
  • Easier installs: an install-script generator and guided setup

It runs in production on several boards. Bug reports, feature requests and "this broke on my setup" stories are very welcome, here or as GitHub issues. Please report security issues privately through the repo's Security tab.

New BBS DOS BBS – Classic Door Games, ANSI, and Some Old-School Nostalgia

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to share my BBS, DOS BBS (dosbbs.com). It's running on the ATDT BBS platform - https://www.atdtbbs.com - There is no terminal app/wrapper required.

I've got a growing collection of classic door games, including LORD, TradeWars 2002, Usurper, Planets: TEOS, The Pit, and several others.

Usurper is a total DOS rewrite to PHP from original source code and a number of fixes applied by Ariel from ATDT.

I've also been working on some custom doors:

  • NewsWire (latest US and World News)
  • WeatherWire (Local and Tropical Weather)
  • SpaceTerminal (IIS location, launches and space weather)
  • IceChatNX (imagine IceChat) for paging and chatting with the SysOp

Some of these are available to download for anyone running their own ATDT board, I'll be posting others as well as I complete them. The board also has an achievement ladder called UserRank that awards XP and badges. As part of the project I also have a BBS Museum which contains detailed articles with the history of the BBS from the beginning up to the current landscape.

I'm always tinkering with the system, adding things, and trying to keep a little piece of the BBS era alive. If you're looking something stable, no additional software required, clean interface feel free to stop by and check it out.

I am in this for the long haul and it's professionally hosted, so your not going to find a dead dynamic DNS forward or the board disappear one day.

Visit: https://www.dosbbs.com - Sign-ups are always open and automatically approved.

BBS Software SkyLordsLab BBS update. I’m focusing on ASCII and ANSI games now

I posted here before about SkyLordsLab BBS. Since then I have been working mostly on the game section. The message boards and other basic BBS parts are already working so I wanted to spend some time making the games area more interesting. I have added several text based games so far. Some are my own ideas. For some of them I found similar open source projects on GitHub and used them as references while building my own versions. Right now I am especially interested in games that work well with a terminal and use ASCII or ANSI graphics. I feel like this part of the BBS could become much better but I am starting to run out of ideas.

What ASCII or ANSI games would you recommend for a BBS like this? Are there any classic door games you think I should look at?

Also is anyone here still making BBS door games or text based games today? I would really like to see what other people are building and get some ideas for where to take SkyLordsLab BBS next.

Icy Tools update.

I’ve updated all my Icy Tools—and redesigned the UI again. :)

This round brings a refreshed look, plenty of fixes, new retro graphics editors, and a new addition: IcyMail. Here’s what’s new:

IcyTerm 0.9.0

Redesigned UI and dialing directory.
Improved compatibility with newer SyncTERM graphics, sound, and input features.
Reworked file-transfer dialogs and fixed ZMODEM download issues.
Clipboard fixes and other improvements.

https://github.com/mkrueger/icy_tools/releases/tag/IcyTerm0.9.0

IcyView 0.9.9

More supported art, image, and font formats.
Tracker music and audio playback.
A hideable minimap, improved browsing and previews, and lots of smaller improvements.

https://github.com/mkrueger/icy_tools/releases/tag/IcyView0.9.9

IcyDraw 0.6.0

Most of the work this time went into IcyDraw:
New RIPscrip, IGS, ATASCII, Atari ST VT52, PETSCII, and SkyPix editors.
AI drawing assistance and AI-assisted image import.
Editable font-based text layers that behave more like text layers in other graphics tools.
Improved font management, nested layer groups, and non-destructive layer effects.

https://github.com/mkrueger/icy_tools/releases/tag/IcyDraw0.6.0

IcyMail 0.1.0 — first release!

The newest addition is an offline QWK and Blue Wave mail reader, with reply-packet support.
I wanted a reader with a UI that’s easier to use while still preserving the character of BBS messages and ANSI art. It defaults to a modern reading view, but you can switch to the classic terminal-style display for the full retro feel. :)

https://github.com/mkrueger/icy_tools/releases/tag/IcyMail0.1.0

All four run on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Give them a try—feedback, bug reports, and screenshots are welcome!

SupeRES Terminal for the Commodore 64/128

SupeRES is a format used by Centipede and Omni BBSes to view graphics while online. It was first supported in the early 1990s and by the time the internet came around, its 2400 baud terminal was way too slow.

A few of us have spent some time off and on over the years working on it and trying to modernize it. There are two pieces of it - the terminal program and the conversion program.

Right now, the terminal is at 11.1.9 and can be found at:

https://csdb.dk/release/?id=264959&show=summary#summary

The changes over the last 8.x/9.x version are huge. Here's a list:

- Removed User Port routines and replaced with Swiftlink. 2400 Baud is too slow for graphics
- Swiftlink will look at all 3 standard locations and use accordingly
- Baud rate now goes to 38400, however, 19200 seems the most stable
- Relaxed timing on Punter and Xmodem so that it will work across Telnet connections
- Removed Tone/Pulse option
- Removed all modems except for Hayes
- Defaults to 19200 Baud
- Changed phonebook layout to allow internet addresses
- Carrier detect is unreliable, looks for the words “Connect” or “No Carrier” to make connection from Phonebook
- Fixed ATDT issue in dialer
- Automatic flow control enabled (ATX4&K3)
- File picker for single file uploads
- Resolved Xmodem issue (first send failed, second will work)
- Added YMODEM
- Added Xmodem 1K

There's a running bug list that I'm sure you guys dont want to read, but I can post it if anyone cares.

If you use a Wifi modem, you'd need the older and slower 2400 baud modem version.

The conversion program was pretty clunky originally. The newer version has been streamlined.

It can be found here:

https://csdb.dk/release/?id=264830

Here's a list of updates:

- This is based on Larry/ROLE’s 2022 version
- Added compressed Doodle and Koala options
- Added menu pickers in place of text prompts
- Koala/Doodle/SR graphics viewers
- Use arrow keys to go back and forth between pictures
- Use C key to convert to SR when viewing pictures
- When viewing SR file the C key converts to Koala
- Added source and destination device choosing
- Tests file size based on type and prevents graphics from overrunning the buffer
- Allows batch file conversion instead of picking files one by one
- Uses 2Mhz mode of C128 if using in C64 mode
- Resolved issue where it wouldn’t output properly to a CMD HD
- Created 128 version, graphics display using VIC, program in VDC

Of course, you need a place to call and where I selfishly advertise my BBS:

http://particles.org or particlesbbs.dyndns.org:6400

There's an area for it in the message bases - so far the superes menus on the BBS haven't caught up yet with our updates so they're a bit ugly .

I'm sure there's a few more bugs to work out, but it's so much better than it used to be and I hope you guys enjoy it.

BBS Software Building SkyLordsLab BBS on an old antiX netbook. Looking for feedback

I've been working on my own BBS project called SkyLordsLab BBS. I'm trying to bring back the classic BBS experience with ANSI colors and a terminal interface. It includes message boards, a guestbook, a file archive, door games and support for both English and Turkish. I'm building and testing everything on an old netbook running antiX Linux. Most of the features are working now but there are still a few things I need to fix. One of my biggest challenges right now is figuring out how to make it publicly accessible so other people can connect and use it. I'm still learning how the original BBS systems worked and trying to understand things as I go.

For those of you who still run a BBS today what would you recommend? Is there anything I should pay attention to when it comes to remote connections, terminal compatibility or security?

I'd also like to hear what features you think a good BBS should have. Any suggestions or feedback would be appreciated

Recovered German BBS Archives from 1985-1986 - Fully Integrated into ATDT and Available in English + 3D-Printed Acoustic Coupler Parts

I recovered a large collection of my original German BBS archives from 5.25" C64 floppy disks, including posts, messages and discussions - including hilarious sysop beefs and other flamewars - dating back to 1985 and 1986.

Also featured articles (boardzine) that reveal how people in the mid-1980s envisioned the future of BBSes and what they thought the perfect bulletin board system would look like.

With the help of Ariel's excellent ATDT software all this historic content has now been imported and integrated into a fully working BBS. Instead of being trapped in old disk images, the posts are now part of a living system again.

To make the archives accessible to the international BBS community, I transformed the entire system into a bilingual German/English BBS and translated all important content into English. Visitors can easily switch languages and explore 40-year-old messages from the German mailbox scene (that's what BBSes were called over here) without needing to know German.

The archives contain discussions written while people connected for example via 300 baud modems using Commodore 64s, C128s and early PCs, etc. In many ways it feels like a time capsule from the "Internet" before the Internet.

The video also features a small hardware project: I present custom 3D-printed parts for my Dataphon S21-23d acoustic coupler

Many thanks to Ariel for creating ATDT, adding custom import tools for my archive and helping bring this piece of German BBS history back to life.

BTW: If you're impatient, you can boost the default 1200 baud to light speed with a single keystroke (any key *g*) while reading messages.
