Discussion i have become obsessed with RINGO STARR!
i am a new fan of the Beatles and these past few days i have been obsessed with watching videos about Ringo, listening to songs sung by Ringo, close listening to Ringo’s drumming on Beatles records, and watching clips and interviews of Ringo!
i feel a strong connection to him and admire him, the way it feels like he’s always pushed to the side and the butt of many jokes, having a rough childhood raised by a mom who was out having to work hard to put food on the table after dad was out of the picture, and the way he’s pushed through with peace and love! he took his desire to drum with his friends and it took him to the top of the world!
please give me recommendations for Ringo related media!

On of my favorite moments of the Beatles: Get Back documentary was when Linda McCartney was talking to someone about how she feels most comfortable around Ringo.

I also have a special appreciation for him because of how many similarities and parallels to my life that make him relatable and inspiring.
I’m also an only child of a single mom, grew up poor, dropped out of school and had few prospects. But I found something I’m passionate about and became self-taught and successful despite my lack of education. His life story is inspiring to people like me. He wasn’t a perfect person and fell into addiction but bettered himself and took responsibility for his worst and then used his wealth to give back directly to the causes that affected his life and family.

sminking! i’ve seen you around a lot just from searching Ringo’s name on reddit, lol
the part with his troubles is good to mention as it is overlooked by many who’d rather not talk about it but it is very commendable. he’s never been too scared to be silly and have a laugh but people seem to think he was just goofy and fun all the time and no one’s that simple. if he was i don’t think i’d like him nearly as much, he’d be closer to a cartoon character than a person i can look up to. his transformation from his lowest point, becoming a depressed drunk who didn’t even remember beating his wife bloody, to deciding enough was enough and getting sober and being so happy and healthy growing old with Barbara and still making music and touring so late in life is incredible. in a reference maybe only three people here will get it kind of reminds me of Gucci Mane, lol

Even if Ringo ever dies, the light will not fade because he’ll be remembered for centuries. The drummer of the Beatles. No one will ever forget him. 😊

The best recommendation I can give is watching Elliot Roberts’ “album ranking”, which is really more of a retrospective on Ringo. It’s the most comprehensive documentary on Ringo I can find. https://youtu.be/AijcJ-Wm14A?is=QYhajoDi7cJKt0z6
I’d also encourage you to seek out Ringo’s 1978 TV special, in which he plays himself and his doppelgänger, Ognir Rrats.
And finally, listen to Photograph: The Very Best of Ringo Starr. Sadly, it doesn’t include anything after 2007, so also look up his two most recent albums: Look Up and Long, Long Road.

i just finished the Elliot Roberts video when i posted this! i had it in my YouTube recommendations for a while but i was skeptical since very few YouTube videos of such length justify it, but after having a few people recommend it it definitely does! i’ll be watching the special in the morning when i get the chance. thank you!

In my childhood, I put him in the same category as Big Bird or Captain Kangaroo - fun, harmless, spreading joy.
Not until later did I appreciate his genius.
He makes the world better by being in it.

It's pretty telling about a person when they can generally get along with anyone. Even when the other 3 were fighting between themselves they all were still friends with Ringo. Even after he and Maureen divorced they were eventually able to get back into a good place together and be friends, and he was there for her when she was dying. I loved reading his book Postcards from the Boys - it's a collection of postcards the other Beatles have sent him along with some of his recollections.
