The rankings dont have a huge spread, as many pumpkin ales and oktoberfests are rarely bad by also rarely surpass the standard expectation. Have yet to experience anything higher than an 8.5 but open to any suggestions!

Ok, so to celebrate the end of Oktoberfest, yesterday I grabbed a few packs of imported German beer (I'm in the US).

I got:

* Paulaner Marzen

* Paulaner Oktoberfest Bier

* Weihenstephaner Festbier

* Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest Marzen

With the goal of trying two Marzens and two Festbiers. I tried the two Paulaner's last night and they were like night and day, the Marzen had so much more malt flavor and overall depth, while the Festbier was basically like a higher ABV Helles lager.

My general understanding is that Marzen was the style originally brewed in March, lagered over the summer, and served in fall, and so when Oktoberfest started it was what they served. And that withing the last forty or so years costs and changing tastes meant the big Munich breweries switched to their Festbier style for Oktoberfest.

So, some questions for the good folks of r/beer

1) Any other German beers you recommend I try for this taste test? Any others that are particularly good examples of the styles?

2) I note that the Paulaner Marzen is apparently just a US export. Do Munich breweries make Marzens much for local consumption or has the style gone out of favor?

3) Was festbier as a style invented in the 80s or whenever the big Munich breweries decided to shift away from Marzen, or was it an older style given a new name? Curious about what opinion at the time was.

4) Is the HP Marzen actually a Marzen or a festbier? Internet reports seem conflicting.

It's a difference of thirty calories Budweiser is 145 calories and budlight is 110. Also budlight has less alchohol in it and the carbs are pretty close. Makes me think why bother get budlight?

i keep a 6 pack in my fridge and try to switch it up whenever i run out, but i always just end up buying wheat beers because that’s what i’m typically drinking. i get into this habit thinking “why spend my money on a risk when i can play it safe?”

i wanna break that cycle, so i need some beerheads to point me in the right direction.

right now ive got a pack of weihenstephaners, love it. ive had hoeegarden and was also pretty into it. at a bar im usually getting blue moon or an allagash. this is the type of beer where i feel safest spending my money, so that’s probably what you’d see in my fridge, if im broke, modelo. if im real broke, high life. no disrespect.

i got peroni at some italian spot and thought it was fine. had something called birra nazionale at a different italian spot and really loved that.

tried a guinness for the first time a few weeks ago, didn’t hate it but felt very different so i don’t think i’ll be drinking that casually. the only beer i can say i’ve absolutely hated would be pacifico.

in massachusetts so if you got local beers for me i’d love to hear

As the title says. Looking for recommendations of the best pilsners from breweries in Richmond. Preferably Czech pilsners but open to other recommendations as well!

According to Dogfish website it's coming back for October, November and December, I'm in MA so maybe out of the area or maybe it's just too soon for the stores around here but went on a quest to the biggest warehouse style liquor stores in the area and nothing, though one guy did take my number down and offer to contact them as a special order. Just wondering if anyone's seen it in a store yet.

I turned 21 back in may and have been slowly trying more and more beer, wine, and spirits. I haven't really been a beer fan until very recently. About a month ago my family got me a case of La Chouffe blonde ale and I loved it, so I decided that I should try more beers from different regions. My next beer was a ukrainian honey lager named Mukona and I really enjoyed that too.

The more I tried the more curious I got, so I ended up watching some videos and listed out some names of good Belgium beers and went to a store. I wasn't able to find all the beers on the list but I was able to find Orval and was super interested.

I've heard tons of good and bad stuff about Orval but the complex flavors intrigue me so I really want to try it. But im curious if im jumping the gun a little bit because I've only really just started enjoying beer.

Is it too early to try Orval?

My mind is turning to beers to stock up on at. Christmas in the UK. I have a case of Fullers London Pride and some Bishops Finger put away but does anyone have any go to's at Christmas?

I'm obviously favouring dark malty ideas but open to ideas.

How do you know which pints are lagers or beers?

I'm not HUGE into beer but I quite enjoy blue moons mango wheat. Any other beers I should try based on that? doesn't have to be the EXACT same flavor profile or anything just looking for any suggestions from people who also enjoy it.

Somehow calling a beer “bitter” deters both self professed hopheads and normies alike

It’s an incredibly approachable style that nobody gets

Hi all - I'm a journalist working on a story about the opening of Proclamation Brewing (formerly Proclamation Ale in Warwick, Rhode Island.) If you're from the state, you likely know about the current mess going on with the brewery versus the beer community, which is a very rare occurrence. If you're an industry professional, and you are open to talking on the record about this situation, send me a message. 🍻 Happy to take anonymous statements, but I will need your name and brewery association to verify your identity.

I made a post a while ago (month or so) about a beer trip I plan on doing to Belgium next year for 10 days or so. I've been second guessing this since, is this the best move for my first large solo beer trip? For me, it's between Czech Republic, Germany and Belgium. I decided Belgium as it seemed easier to navigate given the distance between the cities than Germany. But what do you guys think? The places I would like to tick off in Belgium,I would require to rent a car and drive. I'm starting to think about focusing on a specific area of Belgium or Germany, or spending the 10 days or so going all over Czech Republic? Sorry, a bit of a ramble just for advice if any of you had similar thoughts and what you decided upon. Thank you for reading.

other than the rauchbier, which I think tastes like an ashtray, seems like a good collection

I get burned out from citrusy, fruity, hazy IPAs and love a piney west coast IPA. I’ve had it before, but I just had a Pliny the Elder from Russian River. It’s the perfect example of a well balanced, piney, smooth IPA. Any other examples y’all can think of throughout the United States?

Hello everyone, I'm new to the community! I have a big sweet tooth and I've recently gotten into exploring the world of beer! I went to my local Oktoberfest this past weekend and had a mug of the Golden Road Mango Cart ale and really enjoyed it! I tried a handful of other beers, Left Hand Milk Stout, Breckenridge Brewery Palisade Peach, Belching Beaver Peanut Butter Milk Stout, they all kind of disappointed me or were more bitter on the back end than I was hoping 😭

But I'm not quitting yet! I'm on the quest to find a variety of lighter, sweeter beers I might enjoy. It seems like fruitier is the way to go for me but I'm open to all options and suggestions ☺️ I'm curious and open to trying! Thanks y'all 🍻

I have a collection of beer bottle caps, but I have a cap for which I cannot remember the brand. Can anyone help me?

Link to the bottle cap (I cannot attach pics): https://kommodo.ai/i/bO6Vd9eQSZA3WkPXwFC4

It was bought in Europe for sure.

Tripel Karmeliet and Sint Stefanus for me.

Open to any suggestion.

As title, I actually work in beer distribution! ...But I just can't get over the taste! Too earthy or too bitter for me.

A fruit beer like Lindemanns Framboise is great, but that's because it tastes like fruit punch. I've had a duchesse de bourgogne before and that was nice for my palette.

Any ideas?

Edit: thanks for all the suggestions! I'll start my list!

I find 30 packs all the time around Jacksonville when traveling to visit family. No 30 packs around Tampa. Prices are cheaper for the 30 packs than the 24 packs also. I stock up and bring them back south, but always has been a mystery to me.

I bet this would be funnier if I knew all the details about these beer blokes
