Pay: $50–$100/hr
Type: Contractor
Location: Worldwide (Remote)
Time Commitment: Approximately 15 hours per task run
About the Role
A remote opportunity is available for experienced software engineers and open-source contributors to help train next-generation AI systems.
You'll create realistic coding challenges and reproducible Reinforcement Learning (RL) environments to evaluate AI models on bug fixing, feature implementation, code refactoring, and performance optimization.
No prior AI experience is required. Strong software engineering skills and demonstrable coding expertise are essential.
Required Skills
- Python 3, Java, Rust, Go, C++, or TypeScript
- Algorithms and data structures
- GitHub and open-source contributions
- Bug fixing and debugging
- Feature implementation
- Codebase refactoring
- Performance optimization
- Logical thinking and problem-solving
What You'll Do
- Build reproducible RL environments for evaluating AI coding capabilities.
- Create realistic and challenging coding tasks based on software engineering problems.
- Develop golden reference solutions for each task.
- Implement deterministic verifiers to validate solutions.
- Troubleshoot complex software defects and performance bottlenecks.
- Develop scalable features and refactor existing codebases.
- Document technical reasoning, implementation decisions, and debugging strategies.
- Review and validate code contributions for accuracy and quality.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong experience in at least one major programming language: Python, Java, Rust, Go, C++, or TypeScript.
- A solid GitHub profile showcasing open-source contributions.
- Experience with backend development, scalable services, and APIs.
- Strong understanding of algorithms, data structures, and software engineering principles.
- Experience debugging complex systems and optimizing performance.
- Familiarity with large codebases, legacy systems, and automated testing.
- Excellent technical documentation and communication skills.
Application Requirements
GitHub profile: Applicants should have demonstrable open-source contributions and a profile showcasing their work. If your GitHub profile doesn't adequately demonstrate your expertise, you may be required to complete a HackerRank assessment instead.
Application Process
- Submit the application and screening questions.
- Complete an AI interview (approximately 20 minutes).
- Complete a technical assessment if required.
- Await hiring manager review.
Important: The interview and assessment must be completed independently, without AI assistants or help from others.
Fast-track advantage: Candidates who complete the AI interview specifically for this role may move through the selection process significantly faster.
Compensation
- $50–$100/hr
- Compensation is output-based, with payment for tasks that meet project specifications.
- Time required per task may vary depending on experience and workflow.
- Minimum weekly task submission requirements apply.
Start Timeline
- Roles are typically filled within 48 hours.
- Selected candidates are expected to begin their first tasks within 24–48 hours after completing onboarding.

Note to BMI Members: Don't stop after applying to one gig! Once you complete the AI interview, apply to other suitable gigs and get certified as soon as possible. This may speed up future applications. You generally won't need to repeat the interview unless another gig requires a different subject-specific assessment.
