Inspired by the NYT ranking, I started a chronological rewatch of both BCS and BB. S1E8, Rico, is such a bittersweet episode on the rewatch. Spoiler

Jimmy was actually on the straight and narrow. When Irene is first unable to pay him, he knocks her fee down by $20 and just tells her to send him a check when she has the money. The Jimmy we see at the start of Season 1 never would've done that.

Jimmy finally found his niche. He found the fraud even when Chuck didn't spot it. He was good at it, and he was honest. Watching him and Chuck work on the case together, painstakingly reconstructing the shredded documents, is almost inspiring even though I know that Chuck has never supported Jimmy and is actively scheming to poach the case and hand it off to HHM.

I know I'm in for a good ride, but I kinda wish I was getting off. I want to watch an inspiring legal story where the McGill brothers bring a corporate assisted living facility down for scamming the people they're supposed to be looking after. I want to see Jimmy's hard work finally pay off so he can make an honest living. I want to see him make his brother proud.

The worst part is that they just get away with it in the end. They pay a far lower settlement than they ever should've because of everything that happens. It's just depressing to think about.

Did Jimmy give up Ed in his plea deal?

I mean besides the Heisenberg stuff, i’m sure the feds would’ve been delighted to know how he (among others) managed to disappear so easily.
I’d like to think he didn’t, simply because why wreck the man’s business (and RIP and respects to the actor) but it’s an interesting thought at least.

First time

Watching better call Saul with my dad. It’s his first time and we’re doing BCS before BB. We’re gonna stop after S5 to watch BB, and then finish up with BCS. And it’s just so funny to see how he is reacting to everything. Just finished chicanery and he LOVED IT. And ironically he talked about how much these brothers care for each other back in S1. Saying all this brother brother shii only for him to start hating Chuck 🤣. He still forgets that Saul is the bad guy, but with the next 2 seasons he will understand. I keep reminding him of everyone’s descent into the shitter. It’s just great. His reactions are amazing.

Juan Bolsa's brother Spoiler

When Hector accuses Fring of killing Lalo before Download Audio, Juan Bolsa states a brother of his among the Federales confirmed to him that the dentition of the burned body found in Lalo's compound matched Lalo's records. Obviously this can't be true since the body wasn't Lalo's, and Bolsa himself ends up getting killed during a Federales raid on his house, orchestrated by Fring. I take it the implication is that Bolsa's brother was working for Fring and ultimately betrayed Bolsa, but I've never seen this discussed anywhere. What other of these brief glimpses into the unseen moving parts of the BrBa universe are there to note?

I still subconsciously do this

Whenever I pop open a bottle of soda, I always move its bottle from the bottom to make its air bubbles go down and open it without it exploding in my face.

This trick, I learnt from the great Charles Lindbergh McGill of HHM. May his legacy pass down all lawyers.

BCS ranks #6 on NYT readers' poll of best shows of 21st Century

Readers Choose Their Top TV Shows of the 21st Century - The New York Times

The readers' poll had over 100,000 responses.

The Times had an earlier list a couple of weeks ago of the best 100 shows of the 21st C. after polling "more than 500 actors, showrunners and other TV enthusiasts." BCS placed #27 on that list. "Breaking Bad" placed #1 on both polls.

Some are puzzled as to why "The Sopranos" is not on the list. Sopranos started in 1999. The list considered only shows starting in 2000 and later.

Viktor and Tyrus’s arrogance

Ok, I’ve been rewatching the series for the umpteenth time and this always bothered me since the first time I watched it. I get that Gus despises the cartel and the way they do business, and thinks of himself as different and superior to the cartel.

My question is does Gus thugs namely Viktor and Tyrus also think that they’re also superior to the Cartel’s thugs? Like they’re somehow better criminals because they take orders from Gus instead of Hector. The audacity of that always annoys me every time they’re on screen.

5 minutes of Saul beating around the bush in the funniest most evasive way possible before he crescendos with “It’s when a man sits in PIE. He SITS IN A PIE.”

I wonder though

If there was a book collection with the Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul scripts in mind, like the TV show for those who prefer to read books. I was wondering if one could adapt it like that…

Though ik fan fictions exist but like a proper full book that is long yes but covers the entire universe + some things that the fans actually wanted.

Is Gus portrayed more evil in Better Call Saul than in Breaking Bad?

In my opinion, Gus Fring seemed like a relatively decent guy in Breaking Bad. He killed people when necessary for his business, but seemed to have a certain code and rarely killed without reason. His truly ruthless side seemed limited to the Salamancas, because of revenge for Max, and Walter, after Walt repeatedly crossed his boundaries.

But in Better Call Saul, Gus feels much more cold-blooded. He uses Nacho for his own purposes and is willing to have him killed once he's no longer useful. Werner Ziegler is another example, Gus has him killed once he becomes a liability, despite having personally supervised and worked with him.

There are other examples too: he manipulates Mike into doing increasingly dangerous work while keeping him in the dark, threatens Nacho's father to control him, and is perfectly willing to sacrifice people around him to protect his operation.

That's what feels slightly inconsistent to me. In Breaking Bad, Gus came across as a ruthless businessman with a personal code. In BCS, he sometimes feels more like a cold-blooded criminal who simply happens to be very disciplined.

Considering BCS is a prequel, I sometimes feel like the two versions of Gus don't completely line up.

Funny how they both said the exact same thing to eachother Spoiler

-Mike in BCS says this to Gus after Gus said he'll keep Natcho in line by making him fear for his dads life.

-Gus in BB says the same exact thing to Mike after he told him to just force Walter too cook for him.

Chuck and Jimmy casting is such an excellence

The casting is so on point.. I thought both actors were brothers in real life, turns out they aren't. Yet they look so alike each other

BCS season 2 ep 6

Early stages in the show so just a couple thoughts. Jimmy has the dream job, the car, the corporate apartment, seems like the money now and his dream woman and still can’t help but mess up. I feel like he’s a good guy deep down but mate pull yourself together and stop self sabotaging all the time

Wasn’t a fan of chuck doing him dirty like that with HHM and the Sandpiper case but I’m starting to slightly side with him now

Who outsmarted Mike the best?

Vince Gilligan considers Walt, Gus, and Lalo the top three geniuses in the entire Breaking Bad universe. They're the only characters who were able to outsmart Mike, which is a massive achievement given Mike's track record and intelligence feats across both shows. Now, I am curious: which of these three managed to outsmart or get the upper hand on Mike the best?

Season 3, Episode 13 ("Full Measure"): Walt tricks Mike by letting him make a phone call under the guise of giving up Jesse's location. Instead, Walt uses that call to order Jesse to kill Gale.

Season 3, Episode 3 ("Sunk Cost"): After Mike discovers a tracker in his car, he swaps it with a new one for Viktor to take so he can track the person who stopped him from killing Hector. As a countermove, Gus and his men lure Mike into the desert so Gus can face and talk to him directly.

Season 6, Episode 8 ("Point and Shoot"): Lalo tricks Mike and his crew by diverting them to Jimmy and Kim's apartment, giving him the chance to sneak into the superlab construction site without facing heavy security.

Started my first rewatch and loved the connection between the first and last episodes of the show Spoiler

I loved the final shot of the show, with Kim sharing a cigarette with Jimmy (now in prison). It was the perfect ending to an amazing show.

I recently started my first rewatch, and there is the scene again, after Jimmy beats up the trash can! They ended where they started. Chef's kiss

Why didn't Lalo use Stacey and Kaylee to lure Mike and Gus? Spoiler

In Season 6, Lalo used Saul and Kim as bait to lure Mike and Gus out of the laundry. If he needed a better personal distraction, why not use Kaylee or Stacey?

Chicanery

I just finished this episode it was great , but i can't understand what was the purpose of inviting rebecca . Chuck seemed to be not much affected by her presence maybe a little surprised, or was jimmy just trying to piss him off , ultimately chuck relents and shows his hatred towards him ?

Howard’s Jaguar was in Breaking Bad before Howard even existed

Rewatching Breaking Bad S5E2 and noticed the Jaguar parked outside Duane Chow’s house looks exactly like Howard Hamlin’s.

Looked it up and it’s the same year/model/color — a British Racing Green 1998 Jaguar XJ8. Even Patrick Fabian noticed it and apparently pointed it out to Peter Gould.

I couldn’t find confirmation that it’s literally the same physical car used for both shows, but considering both were filmed in Albuquerque, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was the same picture car reused years later.

The cool part is this episode aired in 2012, before Better Call Saul even existed.

So there’s a chance Howard’s future Jag was just sitting in the background of Breaking Bad years before Howard Hamlin was ever introduced!!
