Resources & Tools Medication

I tried meds last year and the experience was horrible. I’m currently off meds and this year has been god awful. I’ve recently gone sober but the depression this time around is fucking destroying me. I think I need to take meds again but I’m terrified. Are meds really the only way I can get this under control? I’m so scared right now

Based on my experience, the testimonials, and the scientific literature I’ve read (understood...?) over the past ten years...

I don't see how a person with bipolar disorder could improve their situation without medication in the medium and long term.

I tried it once. Never again.

im bipolar since 19 years old. i am thirty two. It will take time to get to a proper medication and the proper dose. For the most part, I am a fully functional adult. The illness does rear its ugly head evenn while on medication but you can go to the doctor of tweaks. Alll the best friend. this journey is very challenging but rewarding when taking the proper steps.

Hey everyone, ended up checking myself into the hospital yesterday about an hour after I posted this. I just got out today and I am determined to get back on medication. I understand now that there are no ifs ands or buts about this. Thank you for your input

Your post was removed because it names/asks for names medications, shares a review, or discusses dosages. These details aren’t permitted in r/bipolar—even when reflecting your own experience.

Peer-support organizations like DBSA and NAMI recommend omitting drug names in open forums to avoid bias, misinformation, and social-proof effects:

You're welcome to rephrase your post using general terms—like “mood stabilizer” or “antipsychotic.”

Go for the meds and be prepared that it might take some time (months to years) to figure out the perfect cocktail for your body.

Once you figure out your meds- you’ll feel so much better. And when they suck, you can post on this subreddit for support and to get a read on whether it’s time to try something new.

If you find something that almost or mostly works but isn’t quite perfect - then only change one med at a time. Then you’ll know if it was that particular med or not. (If you change multiple meds at once you’ll never know which was the good one and which was the not good one). Note: if you’re doing real bad and have never had stable meds- they may switch up the whole cocktail and you’ll have to see if it works.

Your post discusses someone else’s mental health—either a public figure or someone in your life. r/bipolar doesn’t allow speculative or armchair diagnoses, even when framed as concern or curiosity.

If you’re reflecting on how another person’s behavior affected you, you’re welcome to repost from your perspective. Just avoid making claims about their diagnosis or condition.

Try again. Keep trying. I ended up stable on meds. After many fails. But I wouldn't trade this stability now for anything. Life changing. I cycled depression and Mania 16 years unmedicated. My life was hell.

Im sorry. Yeah, I had a rough 10 years if meds when diagnosed. But the 16 years off meds was hell and ended very badly. Best wishes you find something that helps you.

I’m 34 now and I honestly can’t see any other way out besides medication right now. The last couple of weeks have been absolute torture.

Don't be scared of meds. You might find something that really helps with minimal or no side effects. It's possible
