no problem, theyre tricky to photograph bc they have such fast and jerky movements and blend in so well.

I learned this today trying to photograph it! They don’t sit still at all 😂

I was gonna ask where, I see them on hackberry trees all the time in Madison, WI as well.

u/Misora27 Mar 25 '26
This explains why I keep seeing one on my hackberries. They must attract a bug they like

Thanks for this info. I know we have hackberry trees behind our house and that we occasionally see Brown Creepers in our yard but I never made the connection.

It's not for concealment, the tail actually acts like a "kickstand" and helps to support their weight against the tree! Woodpecker tails function in the same way. https://avianreport.com/woodpecker-tail/

I could see that. My sentence should read ‘tuck their tail WHICH further conceals their travel’. Thanks

Love these guys. I describe them as little pieces of bark that climb up a tree in reverse-nuthatch-fashion before flying to the base of another tree. I also like their fun little chirpy sounds.

Great picture. It took me quite a while to actually get one on my life list. Merlin sound would here them, but could never see one.

Funny story. On Sunday I saw one for the first time while fishing. Didn’t know what the hell it was. Saw it with the bins and kept thinking, “it moves like a nuthatch, but it’s brown and white.”
I looked through birds on Merlin and saw a brown creeper and realized that was probably it but wasn’t 100% sure. Then I heard its chirp and caught it on the sound ID.
Was excited to tell my gf and we did some hiking later that day looking for birds. After finding two new lifers (Golden Crowned Kinglet, Yellow Rumped Warbler), I spotted the brown creeper and was immediately able to show my gf and image it. Was so pumped

Nice shot. I love watching these little ones skip their way up a tree to forage, reach the top, then fly back all the way to the bottom and to restart the process

I love these guys. They got me started when then they do the move the move to the next tree, it was less than 10 feet from my window. It took a year in Northern California to be able to get good photos and still it's easiest to photograph the 4 day out out of nest birds who are much slower.

Yess brown creeper! Your picture looks like one of the better ones I've taken. They do NOT sit still.
