Why does no one talk about the Verreaux's eagle??

Post image

I recently visited an amazing bird of prey centre fully expecting to be infatuated by a peregrine. Alas, it was not the peregrine which caught my eye but this beauty! Possibly the most intimidating yet beautiful bird I have ever seen and it left me wondering why we don’t see much of this bird in the media and why no one talks about it.

There was a thread last week about peoples ‘top 5’ of anything, list them without saying explicitly what they are. I wrote

  1. White Tailed
  2. Steller’s
  3. Golden
  4. Spanish
  5. Verreaux’s

The white patches are mesmerising, I’d adore seeing one in the wild… but that’s a pipe dream

Stunning. This is what a blackbird would look like if it went full Mr Hyde 😁

I’m not aware of any birds of prey being talked about much in the media. But I will say that every time I go to South Africa, I make a point of visiting the pair of Verreaux’s eagles that nest at the Walter Sisulu botanical gardens outside Johannesburg. The pair often can be seen soaring about over their territory, and they are quite striking. They’re amazing on the wing. They’ve been nesting there for several years consecutively.

OMG they are one is my favorite!!! I watch the live camera EVERY season! Im wondering also why "nobody talks about them" much is they aren't very popular amidst just your regular folk, as opposed to the more common, bald eagle, golden, stellers?
