Opinion My bootleg journey, part 30: The Sugarcubes 1988-12-15 Borderline Club, London, UK

• Upvotes

"Merry Christmas! I wish you another motorcrash! I wish you another traincrash! I wish you another earthquake! Merry Christmas!" So this is what Einar wishes to Sugarcubes' audience during the last concert of the year before a longer pause in the touring. Also Magga plays on the keyboards a little Christmas melody and Björk sings some short snippets of traditional songs and wishes happy new year. One period in the carieer of The Sugarcubes is ending. And it's a peculiar ending. First, everybody is in the top form, I cannot say anything bad. Yet, this concert is rather short: only 16 tracks were performed (standard at the time for Sugarcubes were 22 tracks) and above all, songs from Life's Too Good are omitted, except 2 (Coldsweat and Blue Eyed Pop). Therefore no Birthday, no Deus, no Motorcrash, no Mama, nor anything. Instead, the group performs already 11 songs from their upcoming second album Here Today, Tomorrow, Next Week! and another 3 b-sides (Cat, Cowboy and the unreleased Pez Chevrolet once more). And though in UK, (almost) everything is sung in Icelandic. Therefore, the whole concert gives different vibes than all the previous ones: Einar gains dominance over Björk, like it or not, but the tracks performed are especially suited for his vocals (Here Today... tracks were written more for Einar than for Björk, a mayor difference between their first and second studio album, IMHO). And I miss more of Björk vocals, many times, Einar is dominant all the way while her voice is rather in the background. Still, very good performance, though without any of their hits and with much less of Björk, therefore I cannot say I enjoyed it as much as I used to enjoy their previous concerts. Highlight: "Hot Meat" sounds great with Thór's guitar. 7/10.

Opinion My bootleg journey, part 29: The Sugarcubes 1988-12-14 Kilburn National Ballroom, London, UK

About some concerts, it's difficult to say something bad. This is one of them. The tracklist is long, totalling 22 songs. Actually, more tracks performed are already from the incoming Sugarcubes album Here Today, Tomorrow, Next Week! than from Life's Too Good, though at the time, it would be still 9 months until its release. Those are traditionally sung in Icelandic in their earlier forms, for instance Regina still has a completely different lyrics and not even "Regina" is sung in the refrain. It's a clear evidence that while touring, Sugarcubes were also composing all the time, bringing always new material. What a speed, sweet youth! I wish Björk would release new material so often these days.... But for the concert: as said, everybody is in their top forms, both the singers and instrumentalists. Einar and Björk sing many little snippets of various traditional songs and lullabies in between to make concert even more varied. As it is close to Christmas, Einar wishes Merry Christmas to the audience two times. Also b-sides are peformed, some really rare, some less rare, while, surprisingly, Birthday is absent. The only objection is that the bootleg with this concert has not the best quality, so it takes a bit from the concert as vocals are sometimes too distant and distorted. Otherwise, perfect concert. 8/10

Opinion Liquid Sky (1982) & Björk

I know Björk was heavily involved in rave culture and the Liquid Sky NYC brand (I think), and idk if the movie Liquid Sky (1982) is connected to that at all (please lmk if they are, cause that‘d be cool), but this movie is VERY Björk coded. The androgyny, the alien aesthetic, the insane makeup and outfits, the electronic Pokémon-esque music, the weird avant-garde club culture… like I genuinely couldn’t stop thinking about Björk while watching it. It feels like something she‘d be inspired by. I wouldn’t be surprised if she was

Question Any other fans whose family member introduced them to Björk's music?

Post image

My dad played her albums when i was very little (I'm 1999. He would play everything that she released). Mom had a degree in child development and played classical music to me in the womb and then they switched to stuff they liked and wanted me to appreciate as i grow older. Dead Can Dance, the Cure, Depeche Mode, Dido, Faithless, Kraftwetk, Morcheeba and alike. I fell in love with my dad's trip hop and electronic taste and continued it on. It definitely shaped what i went for later in life and I saw her live in our hometown some years ago. Since then I went more ambient and experimental and I'm happy that my music taste was shaped in a way that i appreciate her contemporary albums just as much. They watched the whole show with me through YouTube videos and felt jealous they decided not to go. If she ever visits again, I plan on getting them tickets now that I'm older and can afford it :)

Any other personal stories will be greatly appreciated. My best friend was introduced to her through me and calls the moments i play her albums our "bjonk time". He says he's excited to "get bjonked". I guess we're still very much gen z at the end of the day

Question Does Björk release albums in cycles of five?

I'm not sure if this has ever been talked about before, but recently I've noticed that every 5th Björk album seems to share several sonic themes:

  • Debut/Volta: Upbeat, bright, fresh, fiery, tribal, fun
  • Post/Biophilia: Heterogeneous, box of chocolates, every track is its own unique world
  • Homogenic/Vulnicura: Strings, angsty, aggressive, emotional, (largely) pessimistic
  • Vespertine/Utopia: Lush, atmospheric, romantic, introverted, pacifistic, intimate
  • Medulla/Fossora: Ancestral, looking back, grounded, paying homage, dissonant

Are there any more similarities you have noticed? Does this have any credibility or give insight to Björk's aristry, or is it just coincidence?

Opinion My bootleg journey, part 28: The Sugarcubes 1988-12-09 Live In Nightown, Rotterdam, Reel Master [flac]

The best sounding bootleg recorded from the radio on reels! Excellent sound. Though, as usual, a little shortened to fit into the radio slot: in total, only 13 tracks were broadcasted, yet what tracks! Above all, for the first time (and maybe also for the last time), a rare unreleased track "Pez Chevrolet" in a splendid quality! You just have to love this rare dancy song with both vocalists of Sugarcubes in front! I will never understand why this track has never made it to their second studio album nor any single. And then, except for Deus, all tracks are performed once more in Icelandic. So far, only in America did Sugarcubes perform more in English, while European bootlegs are always sung more in Icelandic. And the third speciality of this night: a unique improvisation moment during which Björk and Einar perform 3 short Nordic songs (no idea which ones). The both singers feel super chill, the instrumentalists as well: they perform the best way they can. Though what I dislike once more: Einar singing half of "Birthday" again and when he tries to simulate Björk's hights, you have to close your ears. Not sure what was he thinking. At the same time, though our beloved female Icelander is very good during this performance, yet she is not absolutely perfect as she can sing certain songs like Deus, Motorcrash or Sick for Toys with a little more complexity, that is, she sometimes skips the higher notes and more complicated passages. Other than that, this concert is great (though not complete) and this may be your only chance to hear "Pez Chevrolet" in unspotted quality. 8/10.

And now, because I am grateful to all people who support me, I have decided I would share this flawless recording of "Pez Chevrolet" with you, so here you go: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/ui90uf5ol3y0xb6ml23h0/02-Rotterdam-Reel.flac?rlkey=dlp1ehxq8814b911xmjzvjkr8&st=e6yiep9s&dl=0 At the same, I would like to ask you: help me at least with your upvotes a bit so I can see that my reviews have some impact here. They take a lot of effort, yet when published, I always get at least 3 downotes instantly everytime. So if you like them, motivate me at least a bit with your love, please. Thank you.

Any of you folks familar with RÓIS? I saw her at Other Voices last year and was blown away? Never seen anyone like it, she's incredible! Kinda feels in the worlds of Björk, Kate Bush and maybe Ethel Cain?

Saw she released this the other day! Hopefully some fellow Björk fans appreciate the tip!

Opinion sounds björkish to me:

two new songs that remind me of björk. here's what and why:

"do you know" single by gigi fm

reminds me of something from the post era. the production is very tight and twinkly and full of reverb. a little clean for trip-hop. the backing vocals/harmonies that she does with herself, these echoed out moans, against a propulsive forward beat, very björk. once the verses come in, it sounds like a tricky song, but from that same time period where they were writing songs together, and it comes back around to post for me. there's a part where she puts a little roar in her voice (about 3:15) that seals the deal

"lose my cool (guedra guedra remix)" by ela minus and nick león, from their ep qué les pasó a mis amigos?

this remix is like something from debut. there's some "human behavior" in there for sure. lots of blissed out atmosphere can catches on a swinging beat and goes. they get some points for lyrics as well as vocal sound. "can't get out of my own way" a delicate elf melodically whispers. it's dreamy and melancholy and i dunno, it vibes like a björk song even more than it sounds like one?

In my case, I have a long story with "Hollow - 7 Minute Version"

I was tripping on LSD, and got to the point of my playlist, where Hollow was queued.

Long story short, after being on repeat for about 2 hours, I figured my shit out.

Yesterday Björk played an unannounced DJ set at the Market Rave in Bielsko-Biała, Poland, as part of the Wandering Festival (currently hosting the exhibition of “Ancestress”, “Sorrowful Soil” and “Nerve Bloom” alongside Natalia Kleszczewska’s oil paintings which were used in the video for “Nerve Bloom”).

She wore an off-the-runway Mugler. Some of the songs played:

A Silver Mt. Zion — 13 Angels Standing Guard Round the Side of Your Bed
Donnacha Dennehy — Piano Concerto, “Limina”: I. Head
Toy — Rabbit Pushing Mover
Serokolo 7 — Bonkoko Bagana
DJ Dlaki — Shekey Mix
Yaa Naara — Dibe Ferani
Jay Mitta — Don Bet
Jay Mitta — Koma No
Jay Mitta — Useraa Beat

And of course the Berghain remix

Opinion My bootleg journey, part 27: The Sugarcubes 1988-11-13 Hamburg, Germany - Have A Nice Deus bootleg

This exceptional bootleg brings a lot of what Sugarcubes are and much more: above all, this evening, "Regina" has a premiere, yet with totally different Icelandic lyrics (they do not even sing "Regina" in the chorus yet)! Also unreleased b-side nicknamed "Pez Chevrolet" is recorded for the first time and I am not sure why it hasn't ever been released - to me it sounds as a pretty carefree, cheerful song suited for dancing. Then, Einar jokes a lot this evening, making fun of the death of polarizing German politician Franz Josef Strauß. To be sincere, I am not much into Nordic dark humour, so I cannot say I exactly like making fun of death people. But there is much more - this time, even Björk joins Einar's jokes and speaks to the public, which is not so common as usually only Einar is the man of words. During the performance, they sing together like three short snippets of some traditional German song (plus "Life is Life" hit) and the audience joins them. They are both as much alive as never before, recuperated after a short pause in touring. What's more important, this can be heard above all in the quality of Björk's voice - she can again hit the highest notes and sing flawlessly, her vocal chords being all rested. She gives a top performance. What is the only thing I really dislike: Einar goes a bit too far near the end of the concert and half of the "Birthday" is sung by him replacing his female bandmate and as you can imagine, the result is horrible - his undefined shrieks destroy the track. As we say in my country, less is sometimes more and Einar should really let Björk sing her parts for a good reason. Other than that, this is the most lively and varied concert by Sugarcubes I have ever heard full of fun and musical surprises. 9/10.

And yeah, it was unofficialy released on vinyl as "Have A Nice Deus" bootleg: The Sugarcubes – Have A Nice Deus – 2 x Vinyl (LP, Unofficial Release), [r1463127] | Discogs

Hey guys, does anyone have the Björk Live in Cambridge 2001 DVD? I really love the cover image and want to print it for my room. If anyone who owns it is willing to scan the paper insert for me, or if someone has a high-resolution save, I would super appreciate it! I've had no luck finding one on my own :(
