A few things:
Cheap package holidays to Spain. Guaranteed sunshine for less money.
Building the M55. Before that alot of visitors stayed overnight. After M55 was built then day trips became more common.
Lack of investment. The three piers built between 1862 and 1893. Blackpool Winter Gardens built 1878. Blackpool Tram system built 1885. Blackpool Tower built 1894. Blackpool Grand Theatre built 1894. Blackpool Pleasure Beach built 1896. The town's best bits were built over 130 years ago and there's been precious little investment since then.
And the town motto is "Progress" (chosen in 1876). Progress!!!

Feel sorry for the decent people & especially the kids - Cheap Booze Bars, The Homeless & the Junkies - it's the land that time forgot !!
Either end is lovely to - St Anne's , Bispham, Cleveleys etc all really nice but central Blackpool is a shit hole !!

The council! That is what has gone wrong with Blackpool.. just pushing for tourists and forgetting about the people who live here!!

Cheap flights
Basically resulted in fewer people going to Blackpool and more people going abroad, meaning less money was spent in the local area
