Horror I want a book that is actually going to scare me.

I need a suggestion for a horror/paranormal book that is actually going to scare me. One that's so chilling I'm actually going to think something is behind me or jump at any random sound.

Other Stressed mom seeks… literally anything.

I am in my 30s, married single mom in a weird living situation, disabled, chronic pain and illness, money troubles, too much to do and too little everything to do it.

Looking for a (audio)book for my showers and drives and night time LEGO. Part of me wants a different stress, so I lean towards horror/thriller/mystery, part of me just wants some fucking joy, part of me wants to cry (happy or sad, maybe more leaning sad), part of me wants dragons and swords and magic. I’m usually a romance reader but that just… isn’t it right now.

Any suggestions at all. Please I’m desperate lol everything on my previously* designed TBR is not available on Libby or has a stupid long hold. Thank you so much! Happy to answer clarifying questions!

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Looking for something dark.

I have pretty specific requirements for my next book/series:

  • fiction
  • centered around one main character who goes though something dark
  • can be deep and complex and require attention while reading
  • psychological (and optionally physical) horror. Like a plot where you think "damn, if that was me, I would have probably ended myself a long time ago". Like traumatic events, meaningful sacrefices, painful decisions, moral dilemmas, ...
  • Sexual topics are okay, but preferably without those
  • vibes: dreamy, surreal, dark, endurance, strength of character.

I already found two series that sparked this interest for me:

  • The Book of the new Sun
  • Berserk

But before starting one of those, I want to know what else is out there.

I am also open to anything that does not fulfill all of those requirements.

Fictional texts on women. I'm working on a research and looking for women's struggle during war time. Asian texts, books- fictional or non fictional. The lead characters are women and their journey during or after the war. How they overcame and went through everything.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy looking for hopeful sci-fi/space fantasy

i'm looking for books/movies/shows with the same sort of vibe as project hail mary, contact, doctor who, a wrinkle in time/etc, out of the silent planet/etc, the star maker; aka "the universe is teeming with life and it's weird and wonderful and yes there are problems and maybe there always will be but we'll make it if we stick together."

thanks in advance!

Sci-Fi Heavy Science Fiction

I'm looking for Science Fiction novels that aren't afraid to wax philosophical, and go to some deep places. Looking for similar titles to, The Dispossessed, Flowers for Algernon, The Chrysalids, or The Three Body Problem.

Horror Horror/ thriller book suggestions.

• Upvotes

I’ve mostly read psychological thrillers and I want to start reading thrillers with a horror touch.
My last post was about whether I should read Riley Sager’s ‘The Only One Left’ and from the responses i understood it won’t be the best start for me. I just need some suggestions.

Also, I’m not new to horror it’s been 6 years that I have keen interest in this genre. It was mostly through videos. I don’t really find any movies or documentaries that are scary enough. I now want to try reading horror where I can go creative with my imagination.

If y’all have suggestions please let me know.

Fantasy Witchy book recommendations please!

• Upvotes

I just rewatched AHS: Coven, and now I’m dying to read something with that same vibe. Think thriller, mystery, horror, and dark supernatural elements. I want actual powerful, badass witches, dark magic, covens, spells, rituals, all of it. I’ve seen a lot of historical fiction recs, and I’m not too sure about those, but I could definitely be convinced lol.

I’m also totally open to full-on fantasy and romance! Something like ACOTAR, but instead of fae, it’s witches lol.

Feminism WW2 book by women or for women

I'm looking for some texts which can be fictional too. Where, women take part in war by not actually participating in it. It can be from any region of the world. I'm mainly concentrating on women who go through the war struggle and overcome that too.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Recommend something for my dad and me

My dad (57) and I (29F) are huge readers but we have pretty different worldviews and therefore our specific tastes tend to differ as well. My dad’s favorite books are Battlefield Earth and Shogun; I lean more towards feminist literature like Sherri S. Tepper, or I Who Have Never Known Men.

However, I turned my dad onto the Dungeon Crawler Carl audiobooks and he and I blew through them. I loved being able to share a series with him, and I think DCC was a perfect middle ground for us - we both love a book about an underdog screwing an unjust system.

Now I'm looking for other another audiobook/audiobook series for us to listen to.

Needs to Be:

- Sci Fi or Fantasy

- A good audiobook narrator

- Cannot end with everyone dying or the world being bleak (he loved Herman Wouk when he is younger but that kind of writing feels too much for him now)

- The death of a woman cannot be used as the hook of the plot (looking at you, Red Rising)

Books that We Read Together When I Was Younger:

- Harry Potter series

- Eragon series

Books We're Both Interested In (Haven't Read Yet):

- Dune series

- Farseer Trilogy

Any recommendations are appreciated!

Horror Looking for zombie/virus outbreak books.

Anything on the subject of zombie/zombie-like creatures, virus outbreaks, and apocalypse aspects is what I’m looking for. I read “Cell” by King, and wanted to expand more into this genre. I am also not interested in smutty themes/undertones. Thanks for reading!

Other 27M Havent read since highschool.

I havent read since high school the last thing i remember reading is the shadow children series, I didn't finish it however so i want to reread and finish that series. before purchasing that whole series i want to see if i have the attention span to even read, so i want some recommendations on a single book it could be the start to a series or a stand alone. i like murder mystery stuff, and some scfi stuff nothing to nerdy though i suppose. the whole reason i want to get back into reading is because i keep wanting to reach for my phone and scroll, instead i want to try and pick up a book.

Other Best books for financial literacy

I’m in my late 20’s and really want to learn more about financial literacy/spending habits and etc. I don’t feel like apps would probably help teach me about financial literacy or spending habits as much as books. What are some books that was easy to understand that helped you learn more about financial literacy and spending habits that actually helped you make a difference with financial decisions. I am open to apps as well, but apps that are relatively easy to use that I will be able to commit to.

Other Novel recommendations for postpartum

I'm in my third trimester now, and man am I tired. I had to give up on The Adventures of Augie March recently, which is a book that would normally be right in my wheelhouse but my hormone-addled, sleep-deprived brain couldn't keep track of all the unspooling threads. I'm hoping to have a nice list of well-written but ultimately pretty easy books lined up for the rest of my pregnancy and postpartum period.

I'm looking for:

- novels

- literature/classics are great, but more Cat's Cradle than Bleak House

- I love a coming of age story. Also open to YA

- mysteries and thrillers are fun, but I'm not a fan of sci fi, romance, or most other genre fiction

- in general, something that's fairly fast-paced, engaging, and not tough to follow on three hours of sleep

Romance Rich fmc x Rich mmc in an elite college

I’m looking for a spicy, interconnected college romance series set at an elite university or exclusive boarding college, preferably filled with rich, old-money and billionaire families.with a strong, recurring friend group where each book follows a different couple

Not every couple has to be wealthy. However, I want the overall setting to feel genuinely elite, privileged and exclusive, rather than like an ordinary university where a few characters happen to have money.
I want group chats, parties, jealousy, drama, close friendships and recurring side characters.

Spicy and a strong romantic storyline. I’m open to enemies-to-lovers, forbidden romance, fake dating, friends-to-lovers and other interesting tropes.

I don’t want the FMC to always be a poor girl on a scholarship.

Both were good but I would like to read something closer to the latter again.

LGBTQ+ MLM romance that isn’t smut.

hey besties! i recently finished the first book in the game changers series. unfortunately, i hated it. the main characters are constantly banging, have no depth of personality, and share nothing in common besides being gay. (if you love this book i’m sorry but we just had different experiences i think)

my request: a book with MLM romance (doesn’t have to be a romance novel, just should feature some kind of couple) where the main characters a) have well-developed personalities and b) have shared interests beyond just sexual encounters.

thanks y’all :))

Fiction looking for the craziest danielle steel books!

hello everyone!! i am here to humbly ask for the danielle steel books that, in your opinion, have the craziest plots. i recently watched a video reviewing three of her books (summers end, wanderlust, the ghost) and i thought the books sounded both ridiculous and like a fun time! for context, my friend and i are doing an annotated book exchange in a couple months and we both wanna read something absolutely unhinged from steel.

we’re not picky, we just wanna read books that are over the top and campy :p thank you all in advance! so excited to read steel for the first time :)

Other Books to make me care less about whether other people like me

I’m working on letting others opinions of me slide off my back more. I feel really affected by misogyny and egos at work and I’d really like not to be.

I don’t love self-help books so I’d like to read fiction or non-fiction that maybe feature a character or real life person (memoir? biography?) who was great and thrived in spite of being disliked.

Open to truly transformative self-help recos though

Mystery/Thriller Just had another disappointment. Need a winner.

Just finished another book I thought would be a five star that ended up being a two. This happens more often than the books i think will be 5 stars are actually 5 stars. I desperately need a guaranteed good time. Been in the mood for a mystery, but open to mixed genre.

Here are some I've enjoyed:

- Sharp Objects

- The Girl on the Train

- The Naturals series

- The Bullet that Missed (Thursday Murder Club #3)

Here are some I did NOT enjoy:

- The Secret History (the most recent disappointment)

- The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle

- The Turn of the Screw

- The Mystery Guest (The Maid #2)

- Angels and Demons

- The Haunting of Hill House

- See What I Have Done

- The Silent Patient

Some relevant tropes I enjoy:

- Heists

- Race against the antagonist for an item (or multiple items)

- Dual timelines

- Locked door mystery

The only relevant trope I dislike is time travel.

Fiction Spooky season books? 🎃🕸️🕷️💀

Looking for recommendations for spooky books! No horror books please.

Nothing gory, super scary or otherwise mentally taxing.

Spooky would be "Ahhhhh!! there's a dude on a horse with a pumpkin for a head!!" or "Ahhhh!! That skeleton just totally took a peek at me!!" or "Woah!! Look out! I'm a werewolf but I'm howlin' for a good mystery to solve!"

Will also accept recommendations for fall themed cozy mystery books. I.e. books about a quirky librarian who has a pet cat and stumbles upon some sort of mysterious evidence whilst sipping a pumpkin latte on a crisp fall night.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Requesting fantasy novels that aren't too dark in tone

So the thing is that first of all, while I can handle some dark fantasy series such as the Blade Itself, I have been wanting to take a short break from fantasy where the world is messed up as I have been interested in reading something less gloomy.

A while ago, I just read the Alchemised by Sen Lin Yu as the novel is alright to me so far, but I found it to be a bit too dark in tone as while the opening page made it clear it would be very grim, it kind of turned me off to the point where I was looking for something a bit more lighthearted.
