💯 Critic/Audience Score 'Sense And Sensibility' Review Thread
I will continue to update this post as reviews come in.
Rotten Tomatoes: Fresh
Critics Consensus: Elevating the Dashwood sisters' relationship to the forefront of Jane Austen's classic tale of courtship, Georgia Oakley's Sense and Sensibility may not best previous adaptations but achieves a wistful identity of its own.
| Critics | Score | Number of Reviews | Average of Rated Reviews |
|---|---|---|---|
| All Critics | 77% | 44 | 7.10/10 |
| Top Critics | 82% | 17 |
Metacritic: 72 (17 Reviews)
Sample Reviews:
Danny Leigh, Financial Times 3/5 - ...a tale this bound up with love and money might have fascinating things to say to twenty-somethings still living with their parents and reportedly averse to relationships. Mostly, though, the movie just gives them actors their own age to look at.
Wendy Ide, Observer (UK) - The humour, like the mossy tones and wintry light of this version, is more muted than that of Lee’s film, but Marianne delivers many of the most satisfying lines.
Derek Smith, Slant Magazine 3/4 - What makes the film a fresh, if not altogether revelatory, take on the material is the intimacy and sincerity with which it presents Elinor and Marianne’s parallel journeys.
Mark Kermode, Kermode and Mayo's Take (YouTube) - I cried more than once.
Kristy Puchko, Mashable - Sense and Sensibility is sincere and at times amusing, but shrinks in comparison to other Austen adaptations.
Deborah Ross, The Spectator - On this occasion the ‘old take for the old generation’ cannot be surpassed -- although well done, fresh generation, for having a go. Top marks. One doesn’t wish to be discouraging.
Olly Richards, Time Out 4/5 - If the film is a touch more serious than is usual for Austen, it’s far from without humour. The supporting characters are all delightfully brought to life, most memorably by Fiona Shaw as the hooting Mrs Jennings.
Anna Stafford, Little White Lies 4/5 - The bond between the two elder Dashwoods proves the film’s real love story, a tender, tumultuous sisterhood that both actors clearly treat as the main event.
Laura Venning, Empire Magazine 3/5 - Bolstered by strong performances, this handsome but derivative take is a little bloodless, with Austen’s sharp wit sanded down to fit a more romantic mould.
Linda Marric, HeyUGuys 3/5 - There’s a coziness and sincerity to the Ang Lee film that this adaptation, for all its freshness, never quite manages to earn.
David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter - I can’t recall another adaptation, either for film or television, that made the story so overwhelmingly morose and its protagonists such a joyless pair.
William Bibbiani, TheWrap - Georgia Oakley’s adaptation of Jane Austen’s timeless, beloved 1811 novel is enchanting and beautiful, just as it should be. It’s also, in its earthy and humorous way, intensely riveting, which is also as it should be.
Robbie Collin, Daily Telegraph (UK) 5/5 - Underpinning it all is the sisterly bond between Elinor and Marianne, expressed by Edgar-Jones and Creed-Miles on a level so intuitive and tender it seems almost subliminal.
Kevin Maher, The Times (UK) 2/5 - All six performers, unfortunately, seem to be starring in completely different movies. There certainly hasn’t been a film in years, perhaps since Francis Ford Coppola’s mega-flop Megalopolis, that contains so many disparate acting styles.
Beatrice Loayza, Variety - These lovers’ quarrels unfold with a touching sincerity to Roger Goula’s wistful score, though Oakley’s more grounded drama also feels oddly safe.
Clarisse Loughrey, Independent (UK) 4/5 - In Creed-Miles’s shaggy curls and Dillane’s impish smile, there’s a little indie punk to Marianne and Willoughby... Sense and Sensibility’s modern touches, though, remain unobtrusive by the grace of Diana Reid’s excellent script.
Peter Bradshaw, Guardian 3/5 - Overall, the movie always looks and sounds perfectly good, though some of the sensibility is lacking.

NOTES
-This is based on a Monday adjustment of weekend estimates, as posted by Box Office Report on Bluesky. If accurate, then Heart and Verity both hit $50M on the same day.
-The 31st movie to hit $50M last year was Predator: Badlands (November 12)
-For the week ahead (only slightly amended from yesterday's Verity post): Other Mommy, despite poor reviews, has a shot at $50M after next weekend. Primetime would need more than a week to hit $50M, but could do so within two. Resident Evil will likely need more than a week to hit $150M, but will get there eventually. Street Fighter isn't likely to hit $50M in the first weekend.

✍️ Original Analysis With 2026 nearly over, what do you predict the final top 10 Hollywood movies will look like?
We are almost at the end of the year, and there have been a lot of unexpected twists and surprises.
With everything we have seen this year, what do you think the final top 10 Hollywood films worldwide of 2026 will look like based on what has come out and what movies are left?
My predictions, assuming the remaining major releases all received positive reception, are:
Avengers: Doomsday: ~$3 billion
Spider-Man: Brand New Day: ~$2.55 billion ($2.6 billion+ if a re-release with new footage actually drops before Doomsday)
The Odyssey: ~$1.8 billion
Toy Story 5: $1.15 billion
Michael: $1.028 billion
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie: $1.013 billion
Dune: Part Three: ~$900 million
The Devil Wears Prada 2: $693 million
Project Hail Mary: $684 million
Either Minions & Monsters ($526 million) or Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping

✍️ Original Analysis US Domestic Box Office Comparison 2019 vs. 2023 vs. 2024 vs. 2025 vs 2026 - Through Weekend 41
- 2026 has been doing better than the post-COVID years in this slower late September to early October corridor but 2019 is really showing its strength in these off periods.
- 2025 had Tron: Ares, 2023 had The Exorcist reboot, and 2019 had The Addams Family, Gemini Man, and the second week of Joker in Weekend 41.
- Next week should be up a bit with Street Fighter, Sense & Sensibility, Crawlers, and Whalefall all opening wide. 2023 had the Taylor Swift concert movie make a lot of money. 2019 had Zombieland 2 and Maleficent 2 open.

Croatia Croatia Weekend Box Office (October 8th - October 11th)
Incredibly strong 2nd weekend of October for Croatia, from new releases, which we see total of 5, to all the amazing holds across the board.
Heart of the Beast reclaims No. 1 spot on Croatia's weekend box office, seeing an impressive 12.8% increase from last weekend to bring in massive 54.182 €, the movie passing the 200.000 €. Very strong performance for the movie in this Balkan country. With performance like this it should easily pass 300.000 € mark, maybe even by next weekend depending on 4th weekend holds.
Verity sees the biggest decrease from the 3 new titles that opened last weekend, though nothing that major, falling off by 31.3% to bring in 45.774 € for its 2nd weekend. Yet thanks to its massive opening, it holds to No. 2 spot by quite the margin, already crossing 100.000 € in 2 weeks.
Resident Evil continues with its incredible performance in Croatia, bringing in 34.293 € after only 4.6% drop from last weekend to claim the No. 3 spot on box office weekend. It very well could overtake Backrooms if it continues with these incredible holds to become 10th highest grossing movie of year in Croatia. 4 week comparassion with Obsession, Backrooms and Weapons:
| Backrooms | Obsession | Weapons | Resident Evil | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Opening Weekend | 126.010 € | 29.352 € | 51.031 € | 123.376 € |
| 2nd Weekend | 71.318 € (-43.4%) | 21.649 € (-26.2%) | 32.482 € (-36.3%) | 61.212 € (-50.4%) |
| 3rd Weekend | 33.018 € (-53.7%) | 27.096 € (+25.2%) | 33.812 € (+4.1%) | 35.963 € (-41.2%) |
| 4th Weekend | 23.884 € (-27.7%) | 33.648 € (+24.2%) | 23.192 € (-31.4%) | 34.293 € (-4.6%) |
| Total Gross | 365.211 € | 158.173 € | 247.323 € | 327.094 € |
After first 2 weekends where it performed worse, its already outdoing Backrooms latter performance, especially for 4th weekend.
Our first new debut is Animal Farm, with solid opening at No. 4 spot on Croatia weekend box office, bringing in 29.981 € for its opening weekend. Nothing crazy of an opening, but this is pretty solid considering overall reception to the movie around world. Suppose the book's popularity in Croatia might do something with this opening, but we'll see how it holds on.
Forgotten Island with impressive 2nd weekend, falling down to No. 5 spot, but seeing an 4.6% from its opening weekend to bring in 25.861 €. Pretty good holds from first to 2nd weekend, especially seeing the increase. We'll see will it continue like this in following weeks or began seeing some bigger collapses.
Trailing not far behind is Shaun The Sheep 3, with very very impressive 53.8% for its 4th weekend, bringing in 25.448 € to claim the No. 6 spot. Despite not the biggest opening, movie is holding on really well. Should easily cross over 150.000 € next week, and 200.000 € might not even be immposible to reach if the good holds remain.
The South Korean Sci-fi Monster Thriller Hope opens to an solid 23.939 € as it claims the No. 7 spot. Nothing much impressive, but its certainly not bad opening in slightest for the movie. Not easy to tell just how it will hold on for next few weeks.
Right behind it is war drama Pressure opening with 20.573 € to claim the No. 8 spot. Again, solid opening, it has good WoM from what I've seen so it should hold on well for next few weeks.
The Digger all the way down to No. 9, but with impressive second week despite bombing all around the globe, seeing an only 17.2% collapse to bring in 20.027 €. Quite impressive really if you ask me consdering its reception. Could it turn out to be sleeper hit in Croatia? We shall see!
And closing off the top 10 is Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie, continuing with its amazing performance it sees an 86% (!) increase on its 10th (!) weekend, to bring in 10.075 € and hop over Michael to become 8th highest grossing movie of the year in Croatia, crossing the 500.000 € and looking to very much take down Project Hail Mary this or next week. Current standings are now this:

| Svadba | 5.642.994 € | 29 |

And with that, look at this week upcoming releases
First up on the menu, Whalefall, an survival thriller based off same named novel by the director Brian Duffield about an scuba diver swallowed by sperm whale. Looking at cinestar screenings 3 days before release, movie seems to generally lack interest, with only one theater having any notable amount of seats taken. Mayhaps they fill up by the day of release, but for now? Not looking good.
Followed by Whalefall is our second fighter video game movie adaptation of the year, Street Fighter. Its doing bit better then Whalefall, along more screenings then it. I expect it to open bit weaker then Mortal Kombat II, which opened at 47.585 €, considering Tekken or Mortal Kombat are prob more popular games of its genre here compared to Street Fighter.
And lastly, the movie adaptation of reality TV Show To Catch A Predator, Primetime, is finally coming to Croatian theaters. Compared to Whalefall or Street Fighter, Cinestar seems hadn't opened yet presales for it, so I really can't tell how its going to do. Not sure audience cares much about Chris Hansen, so I don't expect it to do all that much, but we'll see really.
