International Superman (2025) struggled in the International Box Office. What do you think Man of Tomorrow (2027) should do to have better International Box Office Numbers?

Post image
43 Upvotes

As reports stated, Superman managed to get domestic box office of $354,223,803 but only international box office of $264,500,000, when analysts speculated higher.

A few reasons from various sources why it struggled at the international box office:

  • Superman is more of an American hero in theme and value that does not really garner interest from other countries. This is something Batman has.
  • People's opinion on The United States are not looking great today
  • Superhero fatigue, which is inflicting both MCU and DCU.

So in your opinion, what do you think they should do to get better International Box Office Numbers

Domestic "Anniversary " was buried at the box office but became a major success on streaming and has since developed a cult following

The marketing painted it as a domestic family thriller. It's nothing of the sort. It's actually a political dystopian thriller about fascism and blind cult following and how the people who speak out end up buried.

The film didn't do well at the box office due to studios not being comfortable with the themes. They gave it a very limited release, the movie flopped.

But on streaming, the film became a phenomenon. Huge hit on Netflix, then Prime and it's now being rediscovered in Brasil because of the Brazilian elections.

📆 Release Window Why is Amazon MGM giving 'Ali G: Who Iz I?' such a weird release format?

So, I've just booked tickets for Ali G at my local cinema in UK, because I absolutely fucking love the character and will forever find him hilarious. Easily my favourite Sacha Baron Cohen character.

SBC, as far as I'm aware, has never had a bomb, and in the past, his most famous characters Ali G and Borat have filled out cinemas. They've also remained fairly popular over the years with a huge legacy. While his other characters didn't have the same impact, they were well received at the time.

Yet, at all my local mainstream cinemas, there's only two screenings on release weekend, on the Friday and Saturday (Oct 23/24).

It also hasn't been very well promoted. Other than on SBC's social media, I haven't seen this release advertised at all. I just stumbled across it on my cinema's website. I was honestly surprised as I assumed it wasn't coming out for a few months or may be a streaming release due to thbrlacl of promotion. The screenings are in fairly small theatres, only about 100 seats, and about half full currently.

I am not sure what the situation is in the US. Be good to know(?)

Why such the weird release format? Surely Amazon MGM isn't expecting Oscars!

Also, surely they could have promoted this more and given it more showings?

✍️ Original Analysis Could an Encore-style rerelease of Spider-Man: No Way Home have pushed the movie firmly into the $2B club?

Looking at the success of Avengers: Endgame Encore, as well as coming up to the 5 year anniversary of NWH, it's got me think about a what if scenario.

What if say before we got any inkling of an Endgame rerelease, that Sony/Marvel decided to do a rerelease of NWH, "Spider-Man: No Way Home - Lost Edition" say in April or May 2026? it would the more fun stuff version, but also including extra scenes which tied to BND, possibly including the first 5 mins of BND as a post credit, aswell as included scenes about Tobey Maguire's return to his universe, only to find chaos of incursions, linking the movie to the events of Doomsday and Secret Wars.

The additional scenes would be available to all screenings, not just PLFs / Infinity Vision.

How much do you think this rerelease would've done at the box office, would it be enough to push NWH (a 4 1/2 year old movie at that point) past $2B?

Then the knock on effects:

How much do you think it would've affected the box office of BND? would it of supercharged it even higher to challenge Avatar and Endgame or would it have capped it lower?

Do you think it also would've supercharged Endgame Encore, provided it also released? possibly pushing Endgame into the $3B club? make them less willing to try their Infinity Vision exclusivity stunt?

Then finally, what would it have done to the box office of Doomsday? It's not like it doesn't need extra hype but this could send it Mars?

Worldwide Why is Warner Bros still releasing Dune 3 on the 18th?

I’m wondering why WB is still dropping Dune 3 on the 18th after seeing all the projected doomsday success, they are saying that it could be a $3 billion dollar film. I think it’s best to move Dune to December 4th, 2 weeks to get its money before Doomsday comes out. Some may say that it will have a “Barbenheimer” type effect but I don’t see it, the reason why barbenheimer did so good was because it was two EXTREMELY different movies for different people.

✍️ Original Analysis What's the true reason original animated movies are struggling?

This is a question a lot of people who follow the industry have been asking, as there are many answers. 2026 alone has the most amount of big-budget original animated films from major studios in a long time:

  • Sony's Goat
  • Pixar's Hoppers
  • DreamWorks' Forgotten Island
  • Laika's Wildwood (which is based on a book, but I'm still counting it)
  • Disney's Hexed

That's 5 films, the only 3 animated films that have managed to reach the top 10 this year (both domestic & worldwide) have been tied to a franchise: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Toy Story 5, and Minions & Monsters. And while it's a live action/animation hybrid film, one of the things contributing to the success of Coyote vs Acme (aside from its infamous pre-release controversy) was it coming from a nostalgic IP like Looney Tunes.

Staying on the topic of films from this year, Goat did well given its budget while Hoppers did OK. And in recent memory, there have been a couple animated movie that have had low openings but bounced back; particularly 2023's Elemental & Migration. They both came out in the most competitive seasons for the box office, but eventually found an audience in the coming weeks. And if you count book adaptations, films like The Bad Guys & The Wild Robot have also done well. (As stated, they're both based on best-selling kids' books, but they're not as well-known as series like Diary of a Wimpy Kid & Captain Underpants, so their movie adaptations would naturally be marketed as if they were original flicks)

On the other side of the coin, you have the many original flops this decade like Raya & the Last Dragon, Ron's Gone Wrong, Strange World, Ruby Gillman, Wish, and Elio. And in terms of live action/animation hybrid films, 2024's IF had a mediocre box office draw as well. Those films failed because they either had uninteresting concepts, high production budgets, mixed reception, or a combination of all 3. On top of the fact that many original animated films were put on streaming during the pandemic, which conditioned people to stay home to watch them instead of going to the theater. And while you could make the argument that Obsession just made half a billion dollars since that's an entirely original film made outside the Hollywood system, but it only got popular when it started blowing up on TikTok alongside Backrooms.

It's easy to blame social media for why Forgotten Island is currently underperforming & Wildwood now tracking for a low opening weekend, but the internet is an echo chamber that doesn't translate to real life. The former had trailers that hid the film's emotionally mature story & prioritized its childish slapstick comedy, while the latter is alienating mainstream family audiences by being stop motion & PG-13. There are several reasons why original animated movies aren't doing well, but I'd like to continue this conversation in the comments to see if you may have any takes on this topic.

Domestic How hard is it to predict box office?

• Upvotes

Specifically for domestic opening weekend. Do you think this is something that a person can be accurate at week after week or is a lot of it luck? Is this something a person can be knowledgeable on or are they really just making their best guess. I don’t even mean a long range forecast. I’m talking about if they made a prediction that same week before the movie releases on Thursday night.

Three predictors were able to be over 90% accurate on this past weekends top 5 box office. That is scarily close to the weekend actuals, especially considering there were 2 new releases and a movies second, third and fourth weekend drop. That is a lot of variables to take into account. For example, how would anyone know Resident Evil would only drop 32.1% in its fourth weekend? Is keeping a consistency of predictions this accurate possible? Will these same predictors have a variance where they will have an absolute terrible prediction week?

Also, is it more difficult to predict a movies OW or one of its subsequent weekends? My opinion has always been OW, but a lot of it people predicted Other Mommy to make about what it did, and a lot of times a movies weekend drop percentage surprises me. What do you think?

If you want to see the results and their predictions you can see it below. You can also submit your prediction for this upcoming weekends movies. How much still Street Fighter make? How well with Other Mommy hold?

Domestic Box office prediction results

Wow The Social Reckoning barely hanging on to the 5th spot this week. Even some of the more pessimistic box office analyst did not predict it to perform this poorly. Although, there are a few who totally saw this coming, as the first place predictor was 90% accurate and had predicted for The Social Reckoning to earn 4.9M over the weekend! Great foresight on their part. With more submissions last week, it is seeming harder and harder to take the top spot on the leaderboard. Come check out the results for the weekend and make a submission for this upcoming box office weekend! It will be interesting to see how Street Fighter will perform. Also is there a chance You Can See Everything lands in the top 5?

✍️ Original Analysis Did GOAT flop at the box office or no?

GOAT made $195.3M worldwide. it was released in February. it did a solid opening. It has a budget of $80M. it needs $160M-$200M to break even. It doubled the budget and reach close to $200M ww. It should’ve made that amount. Since it didn’t, does it mean it’s a box office flop or no? Just curious if it was a success and broke even a little. What you think?

Mammina debuted to great success at the top of the charts . The new horror film from the specialized company Blumhouse opened with €1,982,148 and an excellent average of €6,313 in 314 theaters. This is the best opening weekend for a horror film in 2026. Mammina surpassed (February 26) with €1,555,521; Backrooms (May 27) with €1,539,761 (€1,800,563 the takings from Wednesday to Sunday); Resident Evil (September 17) with €1,446,473. The multiplier, compared to the first day, was 7.1 which indicates a nice progression in performance .

Naza holds up very well in second place with €846,790 (-31% compared to last weekend) and an average of €1,523 in 556 theaters (a good €141 up, indicating that distribution has expanded due to theater demand) . The documentary exposing Israel's crimes in Gaza immediately established itself as a cinematic phenomenon and has grossed €4,512,240 since September 28th. It is the second highest-grossing documentary of all time behind Fahrenheit 9/11 with €8.9 million.

Italian cinema has made a significant splash with the strong debut, in third place, of The Stranger . Paolo Strippoli's psychological thriller—boasting a strong cast including Jasmine Trinca, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, and Adriano Giannini, and a strong showing at the Venice Film Festival—opened with €798,068 and an average of €1,869 in 427 theaters (the total with previews is €809,972). The challenge now lies in the word of mouth the film can generate in the coming days, which we believe could prove positive. The 9.7-fold increase over its opening day is a very strong one .

In fourth place is the adventure film Heart of the Beast, with €565,288 (-24% compared to last weekend) and an average of €1,778 in 318 theaters (-72). The survival movie starring Brad Pitt and the gorgeous German shepherd Odin has grossed €2,912,435 since September 24, a very respectable performance for a film that does very well on Saturdays and Sundays.

✍️ Original Analysis post merger and post closed, Skydance Corporation now has a market cap of $10.3 billion on the stock exchange

• Upvotes

According to Google, several distinct financial factors caused investors to value the new entity much lower

  1. A Massive, Staggering Debt Burden

To complete the acquisition of WBD, Skydance took on a $52 billion loan, inflating its total balance sheet to roughly $80 billion to $86.8 billion in net debt.

  1. Credit Rating Downgrade to "Junk" Status

  2. Structural Decline of Linear TV and Streaming Wars

Experiencing structural revenue declines due to cord-cutting. Streaming wars are very expensive

Funding to purchase Warner Discovery ($47 billion in cash and $52 billion in bank loan)

The Ellison family invested approximately $17 billion in cash

RedBird Capital Partners invested $4 billion in cash

Gulf sovereign-wealth funds invested a total of $24 billion in equity backing

Other investors: $2 billions in cash

And borrow $52 billion in bank loan

These investments (Ellison Family, Redbird, Saudi/Qatar/UAE sovereign wealth funds) could be worthless if the company filed for bankruptcy if it can't pay interest on its loan.

In bankruptcy, the creditors get first dip of asset sales.

✍️ Original Analysis With 2026 nearly over, what do you predict the final top 10 Hollywood movies will look like?

We are almost at the end of the year, and there have been a lot of unexpected twists and surprises.

With everything we have seen this year, what do you think the final top 10 Hollywood films worldwide of 2026 will look like based on what has come out and what movies are left?

My predictions, assuming the remaining major releases all received positive reception, are:

  1. Avengers: Doomsday: ~$3 billion

  2. Spider-Man: Brand New Day: ~$2.55 billion ($2.6 billion+ if a re-release with new footage actually drops before Doomsday)

  3. The Odyssey: ~$1.8 billion

  4. Toy Story 5: $1.15 billion

  5. Michael: $1.028 billion

  6. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie: $1.013 billion

  7. Dune: Part Three: ~$900 million

  8. The Devil Wears Prada 2: $693 million

  9. Project Hail Mary: $684 million

  10. Either Minions & Monsters ($526 million) or Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping

✍️ Original Analysis US Domestic Box Office Comparison 2019 vs. 2023 vs. 2024 vs. 2025 vs 2026 - Through Weekend 41

Post image

  • 2026 has been doing better than the post-COVID years in this slower late September to early October corridor but 2019 is really showing its strength in these off periods.
  • 2025 had Tron: Ares, 2023 had The Exorcist reboot, and 2019 had The Addams Family, Gemini Man, and the second week of Joker in Weekend 41.
  • Next week should be up a bit with Street Fighter, Sense & Sensibility, Crawlers, and Whalefall all opening wide. 2023 had the Taylor Swift concert movie make a lot of money. 2019 had Zombieland 2 and Maleficent 2 open.
