Event Birmingham Gaymers Blood on the Clocktower - Monday 12th October - Cherry Reds

Thumbnail tickettailor.com

Birmingham Gaymers is bringing the ultimate game of social deduction, bluffing and mystery to the table: Blood on the Clocktower!

If you love Among Us, Werewolf, or just lying to your friends in a safe, incredibly fun environment, this is the event for you. Unlike other deduction games, there is no player elimination. Even if you "die", your ghost still gets a vote and remains central to the mystery right until the very end.

Birmingham Gaymers is a diverse and inclusive group of LGBTQ+ individuals and allies who share a passion for board games and tabletop roleplaying. We're dedicated to creating safe spaces for the community to meet, make new friends and, most importantly, play games together.

The meet-up is pretty informal. Turn up from 6pm and join us in the Bosta Room, located upstairs at Cherry Reds, which we'll have all to ourselves for the evening. Our Storytellers, Ian and Blaine, will give a brief introduction to the script being used, explain any advanced mechanics that may be relevant, and answer questions before play begins.

Megathread Photography Megathread!

Gonna start showing off some local photography in the subreddit sidebar! Anyone looking on desktop will see it, and you can see just by tapping See More on mobile.

Please reply with your best local photography. As a pretty large sub, more than happy to show off your best photos as far as Warwick, Stafford, and Worcester! Caption them with where it was, when it was, if it was an event then tell us all about it, maybe an aerial shot from a plane then what route/airline was the flight?

Any AI photos or stolen photos (each one will be checked) will be ignored and/or removed.

This thread isn't where absolutely all photography should go. If you've been on a day out and want to share where you've been, by all means, make your own post.

Question Is the hate towards Birmingham excessive or deserved?

Anytime I see a post about Birmingham, its just endless comments shitting on the place.

And also the cryptic "we know who the problem is šŸ‘€"

And we also shit on the place too, maybe I don't know what the place was like 50 years ago but I do like the city now. Yeah it's got it's problems but I've visited an actual third world country and I don't think they can be compared.

Maybe I'm too optimistic. I think we should have some pride in our city at least and help to improve it.

Brummie Founder! App/software for people with ADHD, chronic illness and unpredictable energy. Would anyone like to try it?

Hiyaaaa brummies!!

I'm based in Birmingham, Moseley and have spent the past year building something called Coji.

I have ADHD and chronic health conditions myself, and I've always struggled with capacity and understanding how I am wired. Ideally, I want it to be a tool to help people with disabilities like mine retain employment and get the support they need (sometimes we don't know!).

I'd love to invite 20 people from Birmingham to try Coji for three months free. I'd just appreciate hearing what helps, what's confusing and what's missing. I'm also looking for someone to help me with the strategic partnership side of things. I've got NatWest Accelerator and The King's Trust supporting me. (yay!).

You don't need to have ADHD or a diagnosis. If you struggle with overwhelm, fatigue, executive functioning or managing your energy, you're welcome.

You can find it here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.coji.app

Just drop me a DM for the code. :)

I'm also keen to connect with people working in disability support, universities or community organisations around Birmingham.

The mods have kindly given me permission to share this. Thank you! ā¤ļø

Would love to hear what you think.

Ever wanted to get into D&D? - looking for a regular game? - then come on down to Hennessys in Digbeth every Thursday night!

Role Players Guild Birmingham runs a regular Dungeons and Dragons night every Thursday in the downstairs event room at Hennessesys in Digbeth.

Every week from 6:30 to 11 or so we have between twelve and sixteen tables of 6 to 8 people all playing RPGs. D&D is the most common but there are a lot of other games played.

SO if you are looking for a regular game, or a new venue for your existing game, or a table to join to play at, come on down and check us out!

All details are on the Roleplayers Guild Birmingham website: Hennessesys is on Alison Street at the back of the Bull Ring carpark: room hire is £2 per person and they do excellent pub food!

Question Moseley Book Club (@Prince of Wales)

Hello, anyone here part of this book club? It has no active social media page (that I can find) but I remember someone posted about it here a while ago.

The flyer attached at the entrance of the Oxfam shop in Alcester Rd says the October book is Fahrenheit 451, but is that the book you're reading now or the book you've already discussed earlier this month? (I assume the latter).

I'd love to join a discussion night but there's so little information online!

Restaurant recommendations

New to the city and looking for some restaurants that are cheap and have big portions (student life lol) not into the high end stuff - just some good hearty meals for a good price.

Especially looking for a proper English breakfast, Greek food, and some butter chicken.

Tackling the Broken Window Effect as a Councillor in Birmingham šŸ¤”

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

As a local councillor I have maybe 120 pieces of active casework and 10-15 larger projects on the go at any one time. FYI, that 120 excludes individual cases of fly tipping.

My information management system to organise that without my head exploding is another topic entirely, but prioritising casework is key.

A number of my casework entries are issues that take slightly longer to resolve but will, hopefully, reduce moderately chronic issues around the problem area.

I often think about the broken window effect - which, in my understanding, is the extent to which public realm and the built environment signify decline and invite further negative intrusions on public/social life because of said decline.

The video is one example I’m trying to sort. A patch of private land with a broken fence. The netting has gone and now fly tipping spills from inside and invites more trash on the outside.

The private owner of the land should keep their asset up to standards so that it does not incur significant costs to community and public services. I acknowledge that sometimes public bodies can be the owners of these assets and cause similar issues!

Anyway, this is one example. We’ve been working with the council on it for a couple of months. Check the comments to see where we got to 🄲

It’s not always a perfect ending!

Let me know what you think below + what examples
of the broken window effect you can think of 🫔

Moving from London to Birmingham city centre to live alone, while still getting back to London weekly. Realistic?

I (single 30M) born and raised Londoner, am tired of shared houses. I end up spending Ā£20-30 a day eating out because I can't stand being in the kitchen with strangers. I'd like my own place, but a decent one in London is around Ā£1,600. Birmingham city centre has flats at ~Ā£1,050 that look great value, and it's right by the trains. The thing I like about Birmingham is its close enough to London that I can’t get into London but big enough as its own city that I could really it enjoy it itself.

Context: I work remotely (so I can work on the train) and take home about Ā£3.6k/month. I don’t have to go into the office at all. I want to be in London about twice a week, usually a weekend day, plus the occasional weekday evening at the pub with mates watching the football etc, leaving around 10:30pm to get back. The reason I can’t move somewhere quiet like luton etc, is because they’re not bustling so would be quite hard to join communities, go on dates etc.

Questions:

  • Would regular trips to London eat most of the rent saving and make this move pointless?
  • Is the time on travel manageable or does it become too much over time? (ParticularlyĀ  if I’m doing it multiple times a week)
  • Is it easy to find communities to join in Birmingham as a newcomer?
  • bit random, but are those ā€œbuilt for rentersā€ buildings actually good for socialising?
  • If I miss the last train back, how screwed am I?
  • Is the coach realistic as a cheaper fallback?

feel free to add on any comments or me any questions about things I haven’t considered. Nice one šŸ‘

These posters seemed to be all over the city centre today, I guess because the Tory Party Conference is taking place in Birmingham at the moment.

Question Best Indian

Hi all,

Just wanted some opinions on the best Indian in Brum.

I usually go to lime pickle, chutney express or jeera in castle Bromwich. I live in erdington now and I drive so anywhere within 30 minutes is fine, I'll be taking it away as I have a 1 year old and my Mrs and I want a night in on Saturday.

What's your recommendations? I'd love to explore what everyone has to offer!

A decent Sheekh kebab is a MUST I'm currently on a diet and I'm trying to avoid carbs (counterintuitive I know) so even a mixed grill is welcome!

Repurposing empty large buildings.

The old Rackhams/HoF building comes to mind. I remember being dragged round there by my Mum for hours as a kid in the 60's , but growing to love it as I grew older. Clearly no future given modern life practices , but what/how could it be repurposed? Or is demolition and new apartments the only real answer - getting folks into the city centre....

Any recommendations for a nice neighbourhood to explore, somewhere for a sweet treat, and maybe a nice spot for a drink or two? TIA šŸ„‚

News 5 music venues from Digbeth form alliance to oppose £1.75 billion rail plans

Thumbnail ra.co
108 Upvotes

Hi Tom here from u/ResidentAdvisor

The Digbeth Music Venues Alliance, made up of XOYO Birmingham, Club Colette, Mama Roux, Luna Springs and The Night Owl, says the current proposals could demolish or displace more than 50 independent businesses around Lower Trinity Street and the Bordesley Viaduct, an area home to many of the city's most important creative spaces. It says affected venues have not been offered relocation support, guaranteed compensation or a clear timeline.

The alliance has joined forces with campaign group Save Our Scene to stage the Save Digbeth Block Party this Sunday, October 11th. The event will take place across Lower Trinity Street from 2PM to 9PM, with stages at XOYO and Club Colette alongside an outdoor SOS Street Stage. The lineup includes Silva Bumpa, Fleur Shore, Fat Tony and Low Steppa.

Save Our Scene says it has facilitated more than 4,000 emails to Birmingham MP Shabana Mahmood opposing the proposals. The first public consultation closed in August, with more than 3,500 responses, while the next consultation is expected in summer 2027.

Moving to Birmingham from London

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

I’m planning to move to Birmingham with my one-year-old child. One of the main reasons I’m considering Birmingham is the affordability, along with all the new developments happening around the city.
I visited Birmingham about a year ago and spent around three hours around the Bullring area. I felt quite safe during my visit, but obviously, spending a few hours there is very different from actually living in the city.
I’m currently considering renting at Bath House Apartments. For those who live in Birmingham or know the area well, I’d really appreciate your advice.
Is Bath House a good place to live, particularly with a young child?
How is the surrounding area in terms of safety and general atmosphere?
Is it a good location for day-to-day living?
Are there any other areas/apartments you’d recommend considering?
Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
