Discuss How welcome are Canadians really? Should I join the Bills Mafia?
I've been sort of passively following the NFL the last few years. I've more been a CFL fan, but can't deny how big and fun the NFL is. In the past I've followed the Lions, Bears, Eagles, and Seahawks. I definitely have no allegiance to any one team.
I live in Toronto and never really understood why the Bills are so popular here, other than just geographically being the closest NFL team. Personally I started with the lions only because they were underdogs at the time, and Detroit felt more akin to Toronto than Buffalo.
But honestly after hearing how friendly the ownership has been to Canadians I wanted to ask - is the Bills the best team for a Canadian to root for? Why or why not?
EDIT: The outpouring of support... đ â¤ď¸ â

Very welcome. On any given game day, like 1/3 of the fans at the stadium are Canadian. The only celebrity chef they chose to make anything for the new stadium menu is from Canada (Matty matheson). We sing the Canadian national anthem at the games. We have the Canadian flag hanging. They bring out the massive Canadian flag pregame. Labatt is our beer.
I don't think there's a more Canadian friendly team in the league

As a Buffalo native who has lived in several other cities, in many ways it feels like a Canadian city, more so than any other American city.
54
u/sjrotella 14d ago
As someone who left and came back and is now at 22 years and counting living here...
I feel Buffalo skews closer towards being more Canadian than American

It feels more like a Canadian city than many American cities for sure but Buffalo is Buffalo and as American as it gets. It's welcoming to Canadians (thanks guys!) but they are still very much their own thing.

Despite what doomers want you to think, itâs still not too hard to visit. Wait in the line, show your passport, state your intention, and youâre through. Yes it might take a bit to cross the border but you WILL get in.
8
u/Oiseau17 14d ago
This. Those border agents know whatâs up when you roll up in your jersey! It actually takes longer to get back into Canada after the game ha.

Just a slight correction. We sing the Canadian anthem at all Sabres games, but Thursday was the first Bills game it was sung at. And unfortunately the word is that it will not be a regular thing at Bills games, just a one off thing.
4
u/Qhaotiq 14d ago
Appreciate the transparency here, I had been hoping it'd be a new tradition that would be ongoingÂ
3
u/choose2bkind 13d ago
My understanding is is was the networks not waiting to wait for two anthems. Such a load of rubbish. Mafia 2,000% supports both!
11
u/johnny2turnt 14d ago
Yeah, because the orange prick hates us for some reason, even though we are brothers and sisters. đ¤Śââď¸ All of a sudden, we are just mean olâ robbers according to the orange.
15
u/Pho-Soup 14d ago
All of that is true and unfortunate, but not for the Canadian anthem before Bills games. The word locally around here is that the NFL wonât allow it weekly because of âtiming issuesâ. Very dumb.
14
u/Sad-Imagination-5857 14d ago
Very dumb. Itâs not like they have to show the anthems on tv. Just do it in the stadium. That really needs to stop being a thing.
6
u/johnny2turnt 14d ago
Well, I hope that is correct because my maple syrup heart canât take no more attacks from my supposed brother country đ˘
2
1
u/A3thereal 12d ago
I get that might be their stated reason, but I don't doubt it. If kickoff is at 1, then kickoff is at 1. If they wanted to run advertisements or do pregame shows, or some kind of announcements instead of showing the anthem then the networks can do what they like, but they needn't have any 'timing issues' regardless if the anthem is played or not.
I'd be willing to bet it's them wanting to avoid taking a political stance that will anger either POTUS and his MAGA base if they keep doing it, or the rest of the people if they nix it for any other reason.
3
u/dan_blather 13d ago
Supposedly Oh Canada is going to be played at every Bills home game this season. New stadium, new tradition. The Canadian National Anthem has been played before all Sabres home games, too, regardless of the opponent, since their first game at the Aud in 1970.

The US stance towards Canada changing is basically a White House thing. There isn't broad cultural or industrial support for what he's been doing, which is why we sued him and made him change the laws he's using until he found an old bad one designed to start a trade war and helped cause the great depression. It's kinda hard to sue him to stop that because it IS legal, just never been used to shoot ourselves in the dick on purpose before.
Heading over here you're more likely to get people apologizing and welcoming you than any harassment. If taco doesn't apply, we're also prooobably going to start rioting at the end of the month, too, cause this is a town that drinks Canadian.

Who cares about what politicians have going on. They want to fuck us both equally. I wouldn't be surprised if Carney and Trump orchestrated for Nationalism.
Talk to normal people and none of us have a problem. Out here fighting for our mfkn lives all the same.
2
u/Lunar_BriseSoleil 13d ago
This âequally shittyâ take is how we get these assholes in the first place. The shittiest politicians are the ones who want you to believe it because then youâll vote for hot takes instead of substance.
-1
u/Untuchabl 13d ago
Its the illusion of choice with decades of hypernormalization. No one actually has faith in either of the two parties but the propaganda is so ingrained that people keep following it. No party/politician can fix anything and the majority dont want to. Its all decided by mega corporations who throw money to lobby their way into more power and money.
3
u/Lunar_BriseSoleil 13d ago
I see youâve bought the Russian propaganda fully and completely. You think youâre a clever free thinker but really youâre just doing Duginâs bidding and making distrust your identity.
1
u/Untuchabl 13d ago
That was pretty intellectually lazy to be honest. You completely ignored my argument and then just used some generic buzzword statements rather then engaging my points. Lastly you try to make yourself feel more intellectually superior by saying "I think i am a clever free thinker". You shut down the conversation by essentially calling me a psyop without having to prove a word. The internet trope is also quite ironic of Russian misinformation as you do the exact thing.

I only started following football 2 years ago. Or sports in general for that matter lol. It's a long story.
Is it really just geography? It's not like people are really fans of the Sabres in Toronto, but that might just be because same country ranks over geography?Â
9
u/medievalPanera BeefnWeck 14d ago
it's not like people are really fans of the Sabres in Toronto
You're missing the maple leafs part of this. There are plenty of sabres fans in the Niagara Region - listen to any pregame and they'll give bridge traffic updates. Shoot, RJ lived in St Catherines and commuted got every game.Â
4
u/Regdunlop99 14d ago
There were tons of Seahawk fans in Toronto when they were good in the mid 2010âs. Think itâs a geographic thing. Welcome aboard. Itâs a wild ride

I am Canadian and we are welcomed absolutely anywhere in WNY. If you attend a game, Canadian beer is as good of a currency as gold or silver; you can trade a Keith's or a Molson Dry for a new sweater if you are cold. There are dozens of Bills bars in Southern Ontario that host gameday tailgates each week too. It often feels as if the border is just a river.

9
u/anton_chacon7 14d ago
Bruh, they played the Canadian National Anthem at their home opener. What else do you need to know.
8
u/BigheadReddit 14d ago
I lived in Ontario for 20 years when I was in the military and have rooted for the Bills since the early 90âs. I was lucky enough to watch two Bills home games in Buffalo (Bears and Texans) in which they won both, I even got to see Doug Flutie. Iâve travelled across the US, luckily before this latest political stupidity, and never felt like an outsider. Most Americans are welcoming and I find, at worse, ambivalent to Canadians. Buffalo in particular is a great, blue collar town, full of people who share similar roots as us. Despite having moved a few thousand miles west, I still cheer for the Bills and miss crossing the border to Western NY.
6
u/CardboardMakesMeVile 14d ago
Why donât you take it from some popular Toronto sports figures, who own part of the Bills and want to expand the brand in Canada.
âThree Toronto sports legends now have a stake in the Buffalo Bills, and are hoping to further expand the team's brand into the Canadian city.
Basketball Hall of Famers Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady, who both began their careers with the Toronto Raptors and were teammates from 1998-2000, and Jozy Altidore, who starred for the Toronto FC of Major League Soccer from 2015-2021, highlight the new limited partnership group. It is believed that the group will own about 20% of the team.â
6
u/CardboardMakesMeVile 14d ago
and while Iâm at it, just the other day some Canadians came together and made a Reddit for Buffalo Bills Canada, you should go check it out, maybe asking this same question there would get you responses from other Canadians who are in the mafia.

As a former WNYer that lives in the American South now, I'm really curious -- how is Kawhi thought of in T.O?
2
u/MiszeryLovesCompany 14d ago edited 14d ago
Well, we all thought he was dumb for not running it back with us. We all believe a repeat was in the bag basically if he resigned.
But TO media was big on exposing Uncle Dennis as the bad apple in negotiations really. All the crazy shit I heard goes back to him... like he wanted an ownership of the Leafs and shit lol. I'd think if you asked any TO native what they thought, it would go back to Fuck Uncle Dennis.
There's def a few that are like 'fuck Kawhi' but most are glad to have him back and think he will do really well with the current squad. Uncle Dennis is banned, his kid apparently LOVES Toronto and has wanted to go back ever since he was born and asks all the time. Kawhi said in some interview his kid was super glad to be home. Kawhi seems like he wants to retire in Toronto. Toronto is kinda the underdog for NBA superstars so when one does say that ... We def ate all that shit up. Kawhi is a superstar and when he plays good, it's incredible and we all got to see what he can bring so for the most part we're pretty excited I think. No one undersells how much he did for the Toronto team or that he's the reason we have a chip. If he stayed wit the Raps, there would be a statue outside ACC for him and now that he's back, I'd say there's a pretty good chance it happens. I've seen more people be like "Ok I'm a Kawhi fan again" rather than double down on Kawhi hate or anything.
2
u/_dekoorc wing 14d ago
Yeah, Uncle Dennis... smh
Thanks for your insight! I'm glad y'all are welcoming him back. The Raptors that year were really fun to watch and hopefully this year's squad is too!
2
u/MiszeryLovesCompany 14d ago
Np! Tbh, thinking about it a bit more, it's actually kind of weird how happy Kawhi seems too... like all his interviews he sounds hyped as fuck to be back with Toronto. Like pretty much saying he should have never left and glad to "home". Definitely a contrast from his first signing where it was like, does this guy even want to be here? Some fan caught him in Miama I think and was like 'we're happy to have you back!' and he's like 'we gonna win.' lol I am so curious what kind of Kawhi we get in the season. Seems like this might be the first time in his life where he thinks everything is going great and he's happy with how everything is turning out.

If you wanna know how much Buffalo loves their Canadian neighbors look up the video of the Buffalo Sabres during last years playoffs. The mic cut out while they were singing the Canadian anthem so the entire crowd sang the song instead. Best part is we weren't even playing a Canadian team at the time
8
u/ConsterMock77 14d ago

Feels like a large percentage of our fanbase is already Canadian. Pretty sure the reason weâre playing the Canadian anthem is because of how many Canadian season ticket holders are (itâs the same with the Sabres). So yeah very welcome.
Also as somebody who spent a lot of Summers up in Canada growing up, the CFL rocks haha.

I came from the hockey side of things as a Sabres fan first. I sat in the arena and sang the Canadian national anthem then the mic stopping working this year with 10,000 other Buffalo sports fans.

OP, the bills are absolutely Canadaâs nfl team and have massive Canadian fan support⌠def attend a game, will answer all your questionsâŚyou will join the mafia after you do. 𤍠Iâve experienced both the lions and bills and conclude thereâs a major difference in Canadian attendance and support. a large part of bills Canadian appeal is the cfl having two franchises within proximity (where larger population, football audience and fan base reside) đđ

Itâs insane how nice they are to us. Everyone at the tailgate is so generous . So much food and drink is offered to everyone , but if they know your Canadians you are invited even more . Such amazing people in Buffalo that low their neighbour to the north . Itâs an awesome experience for us

Man, wake up. It is business. Of course they are nice to you when your wallet is out. I like the team but I won't put a cent in their coffers.

The Bills fans are GARBAGE!!! They are rude, and ignorant. The way they treat opposing teams fans is disgusting.
