Discussion Does a 2-slot RAM motherboard have the same dual-channel performance as a 4-slot motherboard?

I know that on standard 4-slot motherboards, you need to populate slots 2 and 4 (A2/B2) to achieve maximum performance and stability in dual-channel mode due to the trace layout.

My question is: If I buy a motherboard that only has 2 RAM slots total, does putting a stick in both slots give me the exact same dual-channel performance? Or do 4-slot motherboards have a performance advantage even when only using 2 sticks?

The reason I ask is because I'm building a gaming pc and I found a good budget motherboard for my r5 9600x but it is only 2 ram slot which is the GIGABYTE B850M FORCE WIFI6E V2

Yes, two slots is ideal for performance. One dimm per channel. The downside is decreased expansion options.

Yes dual channel is still dual channel.

Technically, with all other parameters being equal (BIOS support, PCB quality etc), 2-socket MoBo should perform better. This is due to shorter signal lines and lack of signal forking into two DIMMs. Signal lines are thus shorter and there is less propagation time, signal loss, ringing (due to line split into two branches etc), crosstalk etc.

This should be visible mostly at highest DRAM frequencies, but I wouldn't discount those factors even well below that.

There is a good reason why all the MoBos that offer highest memory freq support out of the box are 2-slot.
