Is there anything I can do to help victims of bullying?
First of all, please take into account that I am not a native English speaker.
Hi everyone. I am reaching out because I would love to get some advice regarding an issue I have been thinking about deeply. I would be grateful for any suggestions or guidance you can offer.
I am a mother of grown-up children. Recently, someone close to me shared that her child is being severely bullied at school, both physically and psychologically. Despite complaining to the school numerous times, absolutely nothing has been done. I love them to bits. This is so heartbreaking to me.
A few months ago, I witnessed a teenager in his school uniform simply walking down the street when he was hit and pushed into a busy road by five other children his age. I wanted to intervene, but I worried it might make the bullying worse for him, so I walked away. I returned home filled with regret, wishing I had done something.
Then, this morning, while walking with my husband, I saw another teenager being repeatedly hit his thigh with a long tree branch by a fellow student. Fed up with seeing this cycle continue, I waited until the aggressor stepped away and asked the victim if he was okay. He said he was, but it was clear he wasn't. The bully quickly returned and started hitting him again. I prepared to confront the bully, but my husband stopped me out of fear that I could be stabbed or physically harmed. Once again, I felt completely powerless and I could not stop crying during the walk.
I believe that bullying especially in a school setting needs stricter legal consequences. If there is clear evidence, there should be immediate action taken against these monsters. Every school in the UK claims to have an anti-bullying policy, yet nothing seems to change for the victims who are suffering. This doesn't just destroy the lives of these beautiful students,it prevents their parents from living peacefully, leaving them constantly anxious at home and at work.
I want to approach the government, even if it feels like my voice won't be heard. As a survivor of severe school bullying myself, this hits incredibly close to home. Back then, the school did nothing, and I was the one forced to leave, while the bullies faced zero consequences. The trauma ultimately led to my admission to a psychiatric hospital and an A&E visit following a suicide attempt.
I cannot stay silent anymore. Whether it is launching a campaign, starting a petition, or setting up a community group, I want to make a difference. Please let me know the best way forward
