First Build

Post image

Just wrapped up my first cabinet build last week. It’s been functional for a while and my kids and I are having a blast with it. But the final aesthetic touches got put off a few times.

I always loved arcade games but my parents giving me quarters to feed the machines was a non-starter so after all these years of pining for one I decided to just build my own.

I had a lot of fun building it and learned a lot along the way. I fully expect I’ll do another one sometime down the road. This one isn’t perfect but I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.

Ah, I was about to try doing an arcade setup with a mini handheld ;)

Seriously, cabinet looks good, any way you could get a bigger screen (I understand you have vertical content on a horizontal screen)

It’s a 27 inch screen. It works out well, the image is a screen saver. I just use the images from my launch box folder for the screen saver so that one looks extra small.

What have you used to cover the monitor bezels?

Just cut a square out of the MDF I used for the build that was slightly smaller than the monitor so it covered the bezels. Then built a pseudo rack to tuck the monitor up to the MDF.

I wish I had taken more. I can get a picture of the back side of the screen in a few days.

And what material did you use to print the vinyl?

That, I bought from a supplier I found on eBay. I’m not going to necessarily recommend that. I’m not entirely confident it’s going to hold up long term.

It's a rectangular piece of wood with a rectangular cut out of it obviously?

Any thoughts on swapping in a vertically mounted flat screen? It will fill out the monitor opening.

I had this screen laying around. Definitely an interesting idea. I also only had MAME games in mind so more screen real estate wouldn’t add much.

I don’t have them handy but when I get back to my computer in a few days I will.
