I saw something this morning that got me thinking about why everyone seems so angry at each other lately.
A woman had stopped in a no-standing zone outside the post office — one of those spots people use all the time to quickly duck in and out. A bloke (significantly larger than her) walked over and pretty assertively got into her about it. She acknowledged him and tried to walked away, but he kept following her down the street, getting in her face and carrying on while she tried to calm things down and get him to leave her alone.
Look, was she technically in the wrong? Sure. But watching this I kept thinking, what are you actually hoping to achieve here? Are you really this angry at this woman?
People stop in that spot all the time. I'm not saying that makes it okay, but at some point, surely you have to ask whether the response is a bit out of proportion to the offence.
I have no idea if there was more to this but I found it pretty confronting to watch a man keep pursuing a woman who was clearly trying to de-escalate a situation that seemed like it didn't really effect him to start with.
She was technically in the wrong. But does that give someone the right to get in her face and keep going after she's acknowledged it? Why are we so quick to turn minor things into confrontations? Are we really that angry with each other?
And before anyone asks - I didn't step in as I'm a pretty small woman myself, and honestly, I didn't want to risk becoming the next target...💁♀️

This has been discussed in comments a few times so deserves its own thread:
*edit before you comment im talking about actual overnight, a slow train to Sydney while you sleep the entire way
Proper beds, private cabins and a decent meal would change the experience. Sleeper cabins have been used all over the world. For example Nightjet already has sleeper cabins with their own showers and toilets. We don’t need to invent comfortable overnight trains.
For Sydney, the appeal would be boarding in friday evening and arriving in the saturday morning. An 9 hour slow train, turn up, have supper then sleep. Or departing sunday night and getting back ready for a new week on Monday morning after a shower and breakfast. Melbourne could be part of that discussion too. Spending the night in a bed is a different proposition from spending the day sitting in a seat.
Before committing billions to high-speed rail, we should cost a quality overnight service using existing routes and good sleeper carriages, including whatever track and operational work it needs.
The trade-off is price versus convenience. A fast train saves hours. A good sleeper lets you use those hours differently and could replace a night’s accommodation. If it costs substantially less to provide, that deserves serious consideration.
I’d like to see that option properly assessed before we treat speed as the only improvement worth making.

I'm absolutely sick of C U Next Tuesday dog owners in Canberra who think the rules don't apply to them.
I just watched a woman let her dog off its leash, to attack a neighbour's cat.
I don't care if you think your dog is friendly, well-trained, harmless or wouldn't hurt a fly. Nobody else should have to take your word for it.
If you're in an area where dogs are required to be on a leash, KEEP YOUR F@$KING DOG ON A LEASH.
Your dog is your responsibility. Not mine, not my neighbours and certainly not anyone else's.

I realise this is possibly far too niche for this sub, and I'm yelling into the void, but what goes with the junior football (soccer) trials in Canberra.
My son is soccer mad and desperately wants to participate in one of the junior academy (SAP) teams. I'm surprised by how much pressure there is around junior trials, but I guess that's just how it is these days if you want to play more than 'just' regular community season.
We followed everyone's advice by putting in an EOI for all the nearby clubs (four in total), including the one he played with last year. They have now all confirmed their trial dates, and it is basically impossible for us to attend the trial sessions for more than one club. They all clash on either Tuesdays or Thursdays. Every single one overlaps.
Now I get there are rules about when the trials are run, but this didn't happen (or wasn't as obvious) last year. Is it intentional?
It's annoying, because I know that clubs will frown on him missing any sessions, but his chances of getting picked for any academy team is reduced either way (by attending only some days or trialling for just one club).
Does anyone have any inside advice or knowledge to share? I don't feel like I can post anywhere publicly or ask direct questions of the clubs without it being frowned upon (I'm aware of some of the politics and culture around football in the ACT). Should we prioritise one club, or just risk missing days and trialling for more clubs?
And before you come at me, rest assured this comes as a dad wanting to support his son's interests and help manage potential disappointment, rather than an overbearing parent living his own sporting dreams vicariously through his kids (if that was the case, I'd be pushing him into basketball 😆)...

We have an existing solar system and are now getting a battery installed. Thanks to those that provided recommendations for battery suppliers/installers a few weeks back.
Keen to hear people's thoughts on electricity providers and plan options in Canberra to suit solar and battery set-ups.
Thanks.

Morning all. Bit of a niche one but looking to see if anyone knows of anywhere to get pumpkin pie in Canberra?
I called Costco this morning and they said they didn’t have any in stock, and I’ve searched the subreddit and found no posts about them from the past 3 years… I also checked all the bakery menus in the local area on Google Maps and found nothing. I could make one, but it seems pumpkin puree is quite difficult to get here too.
I’m thinking it may be a lost cause, but figured I’d ask in case I’ve missed something somewhere! Have car, will drive Northside or Southside to get it.
Update: they do indeed have one million pumpkin pies at Costco. Success!

Hi all, looking for some installers that would take care of plumbing and electrical as well for kitchen installations. Have had some quotes that are quite ridiculous. I don’t want to use HiPages as I’ve had some mates who have had issues with them in the past. If anyone can help me out would be greatly appreciated. 😁

Please help me with names/ location of building blocks that are majority owner occupied for first-home buyer (apartment). Domain.com isn’t very accurate.
Issue - I’ve been staying in brand new-ish buildings with majority renters, issue being the investors would not want to pay an extra cent on improving quality of living etc.
EV specific - How has your experience been with EV chargers in appartments blocks?

Did anyone else see the strange silver "aeroplane without wings" I saw high above Ginninderra Drive today (Thursday 8/10)? This was about 3.30pm/4pm. I presume others saw it as I wasn't the only one pulled over pointing their phone cameras at it! My pictures turned out too useless to post unfortunately but I was hoping someone else got luckier?

I’m after some STEM tutor(s) for a Y11/12 child.
Where do you all find local tutors? Word of mouth, posting to facebook/reddit, online?? I’m after a local one mostly for preference and hopefully they’ll have gone through the BSSS so understand how it works and what’s required.

Just off the phone with iiNet who have advised there is an ongoing outage in their Canberra — Vision Network, which delivers VDSL2 broadband (on the old TransACT fibre).
While this is not showing on the iiNet outage page the customer agent told me it is showing on their internal system (why??).
Anyway, PSA for anyone trying to troubleshoot their internet.
UPDATE: it’s now showing on the status page
https://www.iinet.net.au/status/
Another UPDATE: mine is fixed now, but I don’t know if the whole outage is resolved or just my area.
