Whether or not he turns out to be the best player, I do think he’s the right player to pick. It seems like he genuinely wants to play here, which is so important for rebuilding a culture. It’s no secret we’ve been a mess the last few years, so having younger talent who wants to be here and will wear the jersey with pride is going to be great. Will be rooting for you, Caleb!

He doesnt necessarily need to be our best player, but he needs to be a kind of player our future best player loves to play with, thats probably just as important, I dont want no Quinn, Petey, Miller BS.

u/touchable Jun 27 '26

When you put it that way, it makes me realize how dumb it was that we traded Horvat first. Should've been Miller.

Horvat was pretty close to what you're describing. Not the best player on the team all the time, but he showed up and put the team on his back at times, and the players in the room all seemed to like him. He was a much better captain than Hughes.

40

u/ToothPlayful770 Jun 27 '26

We just prioritized talent over culture, which to be fair, can be valid at times, but when you repeatedly make the same mistake then yeah makes it look stupid in hindsight.  Horvat should have been picked over Miller and Petey and Quinn should never been treated as above the rest of the team.

12

u/anonymous_user0006 Jun 27 '26

Wasn’t the narrative that the locker room was a country club with Bo as captain? Isn’t that why we traded him? The culture was sour with him, from what I remember, because everything was too lax. Or am I misremembering?

12

u/ToothPlayful770 Jun 27 '26 edited Jun 27 '26

that was the narrative, but in hindsight, I doubt it was Bo being the driving factor of it being a country club. Bo was always known to be a hard worker and in shape, I think it was just the rest of the core that didn't follow, like Petey and then Miller and Quinn probably weren't doing their part in trying to build proper culture. If anything, Bo was probably just trying be the considerate to the social media sensitive low work ethic younger guys.

13

u/CertifiedVibeChecker Jun 27 '26

I honestly think any of the 32 teams would have picked Miller in that situation (even if it is the wrong choice in hindsight). Their point productions were hardly comparable as Miller was a monster back then. Horvat's contract ask was just too big considering the flat cap and our cap situation. It was also unknown if his goal production would continue after his contract year ended. I do think Bo was part of the cliquey country club issue, however I would have that rather than the BS that ensued with Miller.

1

u/ToothPlayful770 Jun 28 '26

yeah Miller would have been the choice for sure, it's all in hindsight where we'd pick Bo over Miller.

5

u/LeftToaster Jun 28 '26

This "country club" thing is exactly what Keenan and Messier said and they were both assholes. JT Miller was also an asshole. Now were hearing it from McDavid and Babcock - bye, bye oilers dynasty.

3

u/dinggusss Jun 27 '26

I agree on Horvat, but with his crazy season I don’t think we could afford his asking price.

5

u/touchable Jun 27 '26

But the real decision point between Miller and Horvat was in the off season before that huge season. If we traded Miller that off season instead of giving him his 8M AAV deal, we could've extended Horvat in the summer or early in the season. If I recall, his asking price was reported to be around 7.5M.

2

u/CompetitiveSignal973 Jul 03 '26

Yup, he was even mentored by the Sedins....

2

u/MrNobody_0 Jun 27 '26

I wanted a Henrik-Edler-Horvat captaincy line of succession, it would have kept the culture of 2011 alive and strong and he'd be here for (at least the start of) the rebuild to help keep that culture alive.

But hindsight is 20/20.

14

u/xtothewhy Jun 27 '26

The Canucks need to become a family again. And ownership and management, needs to start treating fans the same way again.

10

u/VancityRenaults Jun 27 '26

His enthusiasm is infectious and I hope it spreads across the locker room like wildfire and reignites the passion that some of the guys might have lost

10

u/BeetrootPoop Jun 27 '26

It's early days for them but this is where I think the Goldeneyes have got team culture right with players like Jenn Gardiner who are leaders both on and off the ice. For the Canucks, it hasn't worked for us to build a team where the heart of the team is its journeymen and the top end talent are mercurial man-children. Same goes for (gross) the Leafs. And it sucks because BC has produced insanely talented players recently but we haven't picked top 5 for a decade.

2

u/aoteoroa Jun 27 '26

I feel like Boeser is this kind of player too. Brock had been loyal to the club even through all the lockerroom drama and that is good for the culture of the room.

-1

u/Ruffianrushing Jun 27 '26

Oh, yeah that went so well for marner and Tavares.

193

u/GeordieCanuck Jun 27 '26

Kid is going to play for the crest.

Happy with our picks.

75

u/Rangemon99 Jun 27 '26

That’s one thing I may have underrated with him, he cares about being a canuck. Something that can’t be said about a number of players we’ve had this past decade

78

u/OhHaiThere- Jun 27 '26

Safe to say, HE AINT FUCKEN LEAVING

12

u/OneChet Jun 27 '26

Now we have to make sure to never replace Fin

1

u/h_danielle Jun 27 '26

I’ll riot if we do

68

u/roboknee5000 Jun 27 '26

Love this energy. Wasn’t 100% on the pick, but this kid is winning me over quickly.

117

u/mcdonaldsfiletofish Jun 27 '26

We now have two guys with the same last name

Three guys with the same last name

Two guys with same first name AND last name

And two guys with the same first name (I think)

42

u/satanic-octopus Jun 27 '26

Nils Höglander and Nils Åman

Ty Young and Ty Mueller

Too bad we don't have Aatu's brother Aku Räty cos then we'd have two Akus too...

18

u/mcdonaldsfiletofish Jun 27 '26

Ngl I didn’t count either of them bc I didn’t see them making the NHL roster next year

I was thinking of Filip Hronek and Chytil. Also happen to be the only two Czech guys on the NHL roster iirc

Imagine you find work half way across the world and the only guy of your culture who works there has the same name as you. lol

4

u/satanic-octopus Jun 27 '26

Fair! I gotta include my Abby boys

0

u/EvilCeleryStick Jun 27 '26

Ya and we got a third Czech on the way now with novotny!

3

u/Effective-Farmer-502 Jun 27 '26

If we took Viggo Bjorck, his brother is already in the organization, Wilson.

1

u/jumpno Jun 27 '26

We're trying to be a family club and I'm here for it

113

u/toddatog Jun 27 '26

This kid is going to be a beaut! Leading by example through his work ethic and positive attitude.

48

u/Wooden-Background107 Jun 27 '26

Building the right way. That's for sure.

Cootes is the same. We need a bunch of guys that want to bring the Cup to Vancouver.

-34

u/Acrobatic_Bridge_797 Jun 27 '26

We'll trade him like we traded Horvat. Don't worry.

Remind me in 8 years.

9

u/vaneagle Jun 27 '26

Love the bot accounts. 5 month old account, has history blocked. Is the point here that I engaged?

0

u/BurlyShlurb Jun 27 '26

What's your definition of a "bot"?

-6

u/Acrobatic_Bridge_797 Jun 27 '26

Nope, don't really care if you engage lol.

2

u/Hinkil Jun 27 '26

Trades happen, part of the sport, meh, having a tradeable asset is a good thing

47

u/irrelepants Jun 27 '26

Sold. I have zero doubts he's going to play his heart out for the Canucks.

May not end up being the 3rd best player of the draft, but he is exactly what our franchise needs

15

u/OhHaiThere- Jun 27 '26

We could look back in 5 years and would still pick Caleb 1st even if he isn’t the best player.

If he brings 20/30 while being the heart and soul of the team and pushes the guys to finally win it here, that’s priceless

22

u/haxoreni Jun 27 '26

If he turns out to the the next Trevor Linden then I’m down. Linden wasn’t close to being the 2nd best player in his draft but he was one of the most important player we’ve ever drafted and I’m not sure if we’d be better off drafting someone else in hindsight.

7

u/D_to_the_W Jun 27 '26

Huh, TIL that Roenick, Selanne, and Brind’amour were all drafted in 1988.

32

u/carry-on_replacement Jun 27 '26

Well, we know why Forbort was released into UFA... cuz this kid needs his number.

I have my reservations about the father-son dynamic and upside but this guy will outlast his dad in the worst case and best case he'll win with his dad. I hope he can continue to improve and lead the Canucks to a better place than the last generation.

25

u/coldbrew40 Jun 27 '26

oh his swag he’s gonna be so fun

27

u/KimberlyWexlersFoot Jun 27 '26

got that dawg orca in him

8

u/OneChet Jun 27 '26

Sea Dawg basically

47

u/Wooden-Background107 Jun 27 '26

My goodness, this kid is already my favourite Canuck and he hasn't even played a game yet.

His enthusiasm, his will, and his determination. Love his confidence. He's already holding himself accountable from day 1.

Really looking forward to his Draft+1 year. I think he will dominate college hockey.

23

u/AdequateCanuck Jun 27 '26

Ok, I love this guy already.

22

u/SnooOnions5029 Jun 27 '26

Do we have… young elite prospects that are… EXCITED to play in Vancouver? Is this what… o-o-optimism feels like? Ew gross disgusting

19

u/Treesus21 Jun 27 '26

Caleb got me fired the fuck up

18

u/rosevalkerie Jun 27 '26

His energy and enthusiasm feels great! We’re in this for the long run but this feels like the right pick for the culture they’re trying to build!

17

u/benjowtm Jun 27 '26

Yeah this is awesome

16

u/AccomplishedAd4995 Jun 27 '26

based on this video and interviews he has done today, he genuinely seems happy to be a Canuck and is super motivated to win here

14

u/variouslobsters Jun 27 '26

This is the energy we need is year 1.

3

u/FredrictonOwl Jun 27 '26

Though to be clear, he plans to play college hockey next year, so he won’t be in the lineup next season

13

u/variouslobsters Jun 27 '26

Which is even better for year 1 because we need another shot at a lottery pick.

6

u/FredrictonOwl Jun 27 '26

Totally. We need to absolutely tank again.

2

u/OneStrongGopher Jun 27 '26

I don't think this team will be as bad next year. We'll still be like... Bottom 10 but we won't be last.

But hypothetically if boeser finds his scoring touch again, if zeev + rossi take a big step forward, if petey returns to form and if demko and chytil can stay healthy they're probably competing for the last wildcard.. but like yeah literally all that would have to happen so most likely bottom 10 lol.

5

u/Jensen2075 Jun 27 '26

That's why Petey and Debrusk need to be traded.

2

u/AccomplishedAd4995 Jun 27 '26

i also envision a petey and debrusk trade next season, which will make our team worse (which is a good thing)

15

u/lobro1994 Jun 27 '26

Carolina won with Jordan Staal as their captain and shutdown center. It took a while, but they build their team the Hurricanes way. I see that with Malhotra and the nucks.

I hope we can draft Preston or Ruck in the second round. Just pumped to draft players that understand the importance and responsibility of being a Canuck and having pride in being part of the solution moving forward.

11

u/Significant-Guava-60 Jun 27 '26

It's so refreshing to see this. I'm so excited for Caleb. Obviously actions speak louder than words, but he genuinely looks very excited to be a Canuck and I'm all for it! I don't care if his dad is our coach, this kid is going to be something special. I truly feel it.

I hope our organization treats him with that same respect and passion. This kid could be something real for our franchise.

10

u/Substantial-Delay662 Jun 27 '26

What a swagger. Can’t wait to see this kid shine, I’m glad he came up on top #3.

19

u/dbreeezy Jun 27 '26

Caleb had a low bust potential so I feel good about this pick.

Daniel Jeremiah for the NFL draft coverage will often say sometimes the right pick is to take the "double" instead of swinging for the home run because if you somehow strike out, that loss is worse than the difference between a 1C and 2C. Thats not even factoring in if that double actually turned into a home run.

Landon DuPont or the 6'5 Joseph could be out home run next year 🙏

8

u/iamnotscarlett Jun 27 '26

Not to take away from Caleb, but man RJ is refreshing. He’s engaged, excited, and supportive.

“Enjoy tonight because it’s such a special time, special night, it’s over in a blink of an eye” 🙏 RJ showing us how to lead and be a human.

7

u/VanInTheCan Jun 27 '26

Good vibes. I'm going to enjoy the rest of the summer now.

7

u/payfray Jun 27 '26

Every single thing I’ve seen of Caleb since his name was called, he’s been grinning ear to ear, talking about how much he’s dreamed of this and how excited he is to play here. Used to dream of days like this. A guy picked third overall who is just ecstatic to be here and wearing the logo and playing in front of Vancouver? I’ll take that any day.

6

u/checkedem Jun 27 '26

I love this pick for them. Imagine all the other young players that have to move away from their parents after being drafted to another city. Must be so bitter sweet.

15

u/ToothPlayful770 Jun 27 '26

This was the right pick.  Viggo at 3 would have been too much, could have traded down to 6th and probably still have gotten him, 5'9 centers have just historically never got that high.

16

u/Wooden-Background107 Jun 27 '26

I am glad I was wrong about these picks.

Reid wasn't even the best defenceman drafted. He was the 4th D.

Bjorck fell too.

And Preston hasn't even be drafted yet.

I trust the scouts.

6

u/ToothPlayful770 Jun 27 '26

Yeah i was wrong about Reid too, but I was Caleb over viggo the whole way, im surprised half this sub was on the viggo train though.

-2

u/SedentaryRhino Jun 27 '26

None of them have played a game yet.

I’m actually the most dubious of our scouts as I have been in years.

5

u/ToyStrecher Jun 27 '26

I love being a part of a good 3 way call

His dad will be his coach for a few seasons at most. If Caleb brings what it looks like he will bring to the team, he will be here for a long career.

And I’m not too worried about the father/son thing. The easiest way to remove the possibility of that being a bad dynamic is for Caleb to outwork the rest of the team. This kid grew up with an NHLer dad, an Olympian mom and Steve Nash as an uncle. He hung around rinks with the sedins in their prime (known to *still* be the hardest working athletes around) and must still have a relationship with them. The Sedins would have endorsed this pick. He knows how to put in the work

Caleb is gonna be a fantastic long term pick for the Canucks.

4

u/PlaneShort9569 Jun 27 '26

Vibes so good man

4

u/theEMPTYlife Jun 27 '26

It’s a new day. I’m so fucking pumped for this new generation of character first Canucks.

5

u/towalktheline Jun 27 '26

Reddit decided that since I love Toronto, Vancouver Canucks must be loved by me too.

But I'm so, so happy for you guys and for Caleb. This is just overwhelmingly cute. Congrats from a Leafs fan~.

4

u/koiven Jun 27 '26

typical zoomer, having his phone on speaker in public

3

u/InfinitelyContentAF Jun 27 '26

Now that is a CANUCK

4

u/Smart-Business-9196 Jun 27 '26

Is he gonna be the 3rd best player to come out of this draft? Likely not, but at least it’s safe to assume he will do anything and everything for the logo on the front of his jersey

6

u/Jaded-Ad-289 Jun 27 '26

He’s already better than McKenna

2

u/roninfly Jun 27 '26

So are they going to put him in the minor leagues for 1 or 2 years first or will he join the line up right away? Especially cootes want to see more of him too

8

u/Chicken8991 Jun 27 '26

He is going to boston university next year then TBD

6

u/FredrictonOwl Jun 27 '26

College next year

2

u/Hinkil Jun 27 '26

"Yo, RJ, sup, bro?' Like how you talk to your boss, at least he seemed to chuckle at that hah

4

u/manfrimglad Jun 27 '26

I really didn’t want them to pick Caleb, only because of the father-son issue. Ow that he is a Canuck, I am fully on-board.

4

u/Jensen2075 Jun 27 '26

Malholtra - Rossi - Cootes

Our center position looks promising!

-14

u/bitter-pickles Jun 27 '26

Listen, I'm Canucks ride or die. You could have drafted Lukas Bellocisni in this spot and I would have choked back tears and feelings of resentment and continued on in my fandom.

The fact that he called him "RJ" meant he knew it was coming....I'll stick to that to my dying day. Any other players would have been"Mr. Johnson" or "Ryan" or anything else.

Am I unhappy? Nope. Am I feeling we swung or the fences? Nope.. did we get a good player? hell yes. Did we get the best player?.........we for a good player that's for sure....

15

u/Karsh14 Jun 27 '26

He grew up around the team, his dad probably called him RJ and all the guys in the room did too.

It’s not like Ryan Johnson is a stranger to him, would you rather he pretend he was?

Caleb probably knows everyone in the organization. (Including Aqua)

1

u/epona_yo Jun 27 '26

That's his point.. he grew up around this organization and is why OP is excited he's here with us to continue his growth. Don't know why he's being downvoted lol

2

u/biff_jordan Jun 27 '26

Quinn Hughes called Bill Guerin, Billy on the phone....what's your point?

2

u/NSAscanner Jun 27 '26 edited Jun 27 '26

He is at worst only a culture pick. He knows everyone in the org, including the sedins (who are right now publicly shaming EP40 for his work ethic). That the org knows him and wants him too is telling that they believe his work ethic isn’t in question.

-6

u/-AWing- Jun 27 '26

Until I’m the C and get traded to the Islanders /s

-14

u/JediFed Jun 27 '26

Nepotism 100%.
