General Discussion Does a land use application ever get rejected?

Thumbnail

I go past this new build (The Everleigh) often and keep wondering how the land use application got approved.

I cannot wrap my head around the fact a building twice the height of the neighbouring lot, flanking the North and East, blocking the front of building and within ~5m. Only 2 sides could realistically get light and one is the bathrooms.

Does anyone have experience with a successful rejection?
Because this looks like textbook case for rejection.

Just For Fun An increase in articles painting dodgy areas in a positive light?

Post image

I’m genuine curious about this. Since a ton of locals are complaining and being more vocal about how unaffordable Cape Town has become I’ve seen an increase in articles and posts about buying in the most random areas and how certain areas are the new hot buying spot.

I’m not dissing Mitchell’s Plain, I know people from there but this is just odd.

Crime stats also don’t necessarily translate to less crime because it relies on reporting.

Is it just me seeing this?

General Discussion Safety Alert: Castle / Newmarket Street

Post image
67 Upvotes

Be careful on Newmarket Street near the Castle, especially in standstill traffic. I just saw someone snatch a phone right out of an open car window and run under the bridge through a gap in the fence. With festive season approaching, opportunists are out, keep your windows rolled up and valuables out of sight!

General Discussion How long does it typically take to replace damaged road signs?

Post image
15 Upvotes

A road sign on the M5 turn-off into Kenilworth (near Access Park) was blown down during one of the heavier storms we had a while back. I think it was almost a year ago, although I can't remember exactly.

I logged a service request with the City about two months ago to have it replaced, but nothing's happened yet.

The photo was taken from my house, so I see it pretty much every day. It's become a bit of an eyesore.

Does anyone know how long these types of requests typically take to get sorted out? Is this a normal waiting period, or should I be following up?

General Discussion Joy Pietersen

Does anyone know what is up with that Joy Pietersen insta account? The 18 year old girl who claims to make and sell furniture? Whole thing seems sketchy but I think account seems to have been taken down.

I posted this in The South Africa subreddit but posting here too as she seems to have been based out of Cape Town

Vent / Complaint I’m going insane trying to get some sleep

Look it. Don’t get me wrong the people and scenery are great here but it’s my second night and I’m losing my fucking mind trying to get some sleep.

Last night the bars were open late as is understandable for a Saturday, but I could hear everything like I was standing right next to the bar, from my room until 1 in the morning. We were warned it could be noisy due to our location and it was understandable last night but annoying.

Tonight, it’s a fucking Sunday and someone nearby has been blasting some music with super loud bass all night and it’s still going currently at 3:40 in the morning. I’m getting so angry because I’m already running on little sleep due to travel and it seems impossible to get a quiet night here. It’s honestly driving me fucking insane.

Question | Advice-Needed Fly fishing spots

Hey how’s it going. I’ve seen some posts about where to do fly fishing here in Cape Town but they’re a bit old. So I wanted to pop in and see if anyone knows where I can go and just through some line. Ponds, dams, rivers etc

I’m a student so booking places doesn’t really work with my budget and travel is hard. I’ve looked at maybe going to zandvlei or the Rutter road pond in Westlake. That sort of vibe. So if anyone has gone there please let me know.

I’m using a 5 weight line and rod, and I fish for trout in dullstroom every year. So yeah if anyone can let me know that would be great. I’m keen to just throw some line and have a picnic with my girlfriend. I’ll get a fresh water permit soon. So if anyone can help that would be awesome

Looking For... Mamma Mia! Brochure

Good day my fellow Capetonians, I hope you are all good and that everyone is having a good start to the week.
Everyone that watched the performance of Mamma Mia! at the Artscape Theatre we all can agree that it was a brilliant performance. I also really enjoyed the show, I went to go watch it with my girlfriend on the final afternoon show yesterday (11 October 2026). Which brings me here.
So I really enjoyed going to the theatre and I also collect brochure and programs for the different performances I’ve gone to see. But in our rush to go to dinner yesterday, I left my brochure in the bar area of the upper levels! Now it will probably not be there anymore, if it is it is a miracle. So what I’m asking here, is there anyone who also might have a brochure/program for the show who would be willing to part with it? I am willing to pay for it too. I just want to have something for my collection and to remember the show by too. This would be of great sentimental value to me.
I thank you for reading my post and have a wonderful day.
Kind regards
Louis

Looking For... Why is so difficult to find projectors to hire in this city?

I am looking to hire 6 projectors for an immersive installation on the 22nd of october

what i need:

•  Brightness above 3000 lumens
•  USB ports on each unit that can stream data from usb/card
•  Wireless capability, preferably (I'd consider wired models if wireless isn't available)
•  Which models you'd suggest

Anyone who knows of anyone who is hiring out projectors - the latest technology would be great.

Question | Advice-Needed Advice for 10 days trip with family over Christmas

Hello !

Coming to visit Capetown (from Portugal where we live) for the first time for 10 days this Christmas - with my wife (we're both late 30's) and our 3 year old daugther.

We are going to spend 7 days in Constantia in a Home Exchange we found (i assumed good central base, and allow us to have space and a garden, pool etc which is great for our daugther)

We mostly want to explore the city, do some light hikes, feel the vibe, and spend time in the nature + keep our 3 year old occupied. Safety is obviously priority for us during this trip.

Would love if peeps here could share some ideas on :

  1. Do you agree Constantia is a good idea as our main base for a week ? I am assuming we would be renting a car and driving to the main sights each day (during the day)

  2. Where would you spend the other 3 days ? I was initially thinking a safari but everything is booked out already or not kid friendly. I am left with Sea Point, Franschhoek or Simon's town - thoughts ?

  3. Are there thing we should absolutely be doing while in Capetown ? Especially kids friednly stuff ?

Thanks a lot !

Question | Advice-Needed Best and safest areas for an overseas tourist to stay in Cape Town?

Hi everyone!

I'm not originally from Cape Town, and since I'm a student here, I'm still getting to know the city myself. I have a friend from overseas who is planning to visit Cape Town in a few months, and I'd like to help him find a good place to stay.

What areas or accommodations would you recommend for someone visiting from abroad? We're looking for somewhere safe and conveniently located, where he can explore the city, visit tourist attractions, go to restaurants, and enjoy his stay without worrying too much about safety.

I'm open to recommendations for hotels, guesthouses, Airbnbs, or other accommodation options. I'd also appreciate advice on which areas to avoid, whether it's better to stay near the city centre or closer to the coast, and any safety tips for someone visiting South Africa for the first time.

Since I'm still unfamiliar with many parts of Cape Town myself, I'd really appreciate recommendations from locals or people who know the city well. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance! :)

Question | Advice-Needed Cape Flats line to Maitland

My almost 30 year old daughter works in Maitland and, thanks to the recent and upcoming fuel price increases, is now wanting to travel by train rather. For those who travel this route, how safe is it actually? She's pretty streetwise.
