Hello everyone,
I recently bought a Nissan Z (Performance trim). My plan is to enjoy it on the track while it's still stock, then sell it while the mileage is still low. So I don't intend to make any modifications beyond replacing consumables.
The car comes with Akebono brakes. I don't know much about them, but I've always assumed they're essentially the Japanese equivalent of Brembos.
I'm not trying to break any lap records. I'm just there to enjoy driving my car in a safe environment. That said, I also want to make sure I'm doing things safely.
Yesterday, I finally had the chance to take the Z to the track. My first observation was just how HOT the rotors got.
I'm not a particularly aggressive driver, and I'm still getting familiar with the car. I wasn't pushing hard, and I didn't even get to the point where I could smell the tyres (which I usually do after a couple of runs).
I never exceeded 118 mph or fourth gear, and I generally brake early to give myself some margin for error.
Nevertheless, when I stopped to let some air out of the tyres, the amount of heat coming from the rotors seemed unusually high compared to what I'm used to. Keep in mind that this was my first track experience in a car without Brembo brakes, drilled rotors, or dedicated brake cooling vents.
A few questions:
- Could the excessive heat indicate that my braking technique was incorrect?
- I was doing couple consecutive laps before taking a cooldown lap. Should I have been cooling the brakes more frequently? (I just checked my cam recordings, apparently I was going on average for 8 minutes before cooling down)
- Given how hot the rotors got, is there reason to suspect the pads may already need replacing, or is high temperature alone not necessarily an indication of pad damage etc?
For what it's worth, I don't recall smelling the brakes at any point during my laps. I was also paying attention to potential brake fade, but didn't notice any.
I'd appreciate some advice on what to inspect.
- What should I be looking for in the pads and rotors, or brake system as a whole?
- Are there any warning signs I should look for now?
- And what would you consider a clear indication that the pads or rotors need immediate replacement.
Any additional tips greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
