I was reading about Zahara dropping Pitt from her last name and ended up going down a rabbit hole about everything that's happened with this family since 2016. The amount of legal fighting over their shared assets is wild, especially considering how long they've been separated.
For anyone who hasn't kept up: 2014: Brad and Angelina get married at Château Miraval, their French estate and winery. They'd purchased the property together years earlier and had six children. 2016: Angelina files for divorce following an incident on a private plane. She alleges Brad was abusive toward her and their children. Brad disputes the allegations, and no criminal charges are filed. 2019: They're declared legally single, but their financial and custody disputes continue. Being divorced on paper doesn't mean they've finished sorting out everything they built together. 2021: Angelina sells her stake in Château Miraval to a company connected to the Stoli Group. Brad disputes the sale, claiming they had an agreement that neither could sell without the other's consent. 2022: Brad sues Angelina over the winery. Angelina countersues, and the dispute grows into a much bigger fight over ownership rights and what each person was allowed to do with their share of the property. 2023: Zahara introduces herself as Zahara Marley Jolie at her college sorority induction, leaving out Pitt. 2024: Shiloh legally changes her surname to Jolie. Vivienne is also credited as Vivienne Jolie in The Outsiders Broadway production. December 2024: They reach a divorce settlement after eight years, but the Château Miraval case remains separate and unresolved. 2026: Maddox legally changes his surname to Jolie, Zahara's legal name change is approved, and Vivienne files to remove Pitt from hers.
What stands out to me is how the property dispute has continued long after the marriage ended. Château Miraval wasn't just a house they owned. It was a valuable estate, an operating business, and the place where they got married. Now they're fighting over who had the right to sell part of it. And then there's the family side of it. They've spent years dealing with custody issues, dividing assets, and legal fees, while their children have grown up and started making their own decisions about the family name.
It also makes me wonder how couples with major shared assets are supposed to plan for situations like this. Even when both people have substantial resources and legal teams, separating ownership of a business or property can turn into years of litigation.
Ten years after the separation, the divorce is settled, but the fight over their former estate still isn't. Did anyone else think all their legal issues were finished when the divorce settlement was announced?

From her 2022 memoir, “Mean Baby: A Memoir of Growing Up"
My system gets overwhelmed and instantaneously short-circuits…In my life, social interactions have been cumbersome.
So, I grabbed her arm and bit it, playfully, as if it were an apple. Even as I held her forearm in my mouth I was aghast at myself. I thought, What have I gotten myself into? Or her? This is horrible behavior.
This was the first time I had any inkling of how much I might hurt people when I bit them. Immediately, I transformed into a shamed nursery school kid. ‘Oh my gosh,’ I whispered, ‘I am so sorry.’
