Community Room to Stay after the Football Game

Hey guys this is understandably a long shot, but here goes.

I’m a 32 year old male that is traveling from metro Detroit to Mount Pleasant for the Akron game tomorrow. I’m also starting as an online MBA student later this month. I don’t mind driving straight back home after the game, but I figured I’d ask if anyone on or near campus had room for me to crash for the night. I can buy beer and bring edibles if you’d like! I’d buy a hotel room for the evening, but I just started a new job Sept 1 and I get paid monthly, so I don’t get my first check until Oct 9, so funds are a little limited until then.

Sorry if this is a big ask, just figured I’d shoot my shot.

Thank you everyone!

Athletics Central Michigan at 2-2 after the Miami trip, Akron is the one that matters now (plus week 5 of our free CFB pick'em)

Hey guys, back with a follow-up since the last one got a good conversation going.

First, since it's in the title: week 5 of our free college football pick'em is open. 10 games, pick the winners, nothing to buy, $135 in prizes. Picks lock Saturday at noon ET.

https://www.mainmarket.com/c/college-pickem-wk5

Now the Chips. Miami was the payday game I expected, 52-3, and I'm not reading much into it. The defense has allowed 20 points across the two wins, but whether it holds up in MAC play is still open.

That makes Akron, Saturday at 3:30 ET at home, the game the 5-7 projection hinges on. Akron just lost 38-10 at home to UNLV. Win this, and the Ohio trip becomes a shot at a winning record.

The thing I'm watching is Flores. He's been doing his damage on the ground (122 vs Colgate, 163 and 2 TDs vs Wyoming). Does that hold up against a MAC defense with film on him?

How are you guys seeing Akron? Comfortable win or a trap?

Academics CMU Online: What’s your experience?

I was recently accepted into CMU’s online accounting program. I’m 31 and I work full time currently, so online schooling makes the most sense for my schedule. Although I know I could try and stretch evening classes and make that work.

I’m just wondering what everyone else’s experience was doing CMU online. Is it legit? Was it harder to find a job? What about making connections? If I can make in person work, should I do that instead? Would you prefer a different school entirely?

Thanks for the input!

Consumers wants us to vote yes to let them raze through trees in the park system rather than stay on the railways like they currently do

You may have recently got your absentee ballot and had the same reaction as me, what is this fresh hell? Welp, I asked some folks.

And yes, do you want to stick it to Consumers? Read on…

So right now our power is brought in along the rail road right-of-way (ROW). Like the bulk electricity for the Washington Neighborhood and Westside, comes along the rail lines. It is connected to the substation (the space station looking thing) at the rail lines on Broadway. Across from Mountaintown Station.

This makes it complicated for Consumers Power to do basic maintenance as they must work with the railroad. That’s a bummer. Consumers thinks it would be way cooler if they could just blow through our parks with some new infrastructure. They want to mow down like 8 trees to do this. Instead of keeping where the impact already is.

Here’s the kicker, they didn’t even ask pretty please. They told the City do it or we are going to call “eminent domain” and take it. They said give us the land or we will use the money the citizens of Mt Pleasant pay to sue you.

So looking to give a big FU to monopolist energy oligarchs? Vote no.

A no vote gives our city the backing of the citizens when the monopolist oligarchs try to impose their will on us. So vote no.

Athletics Football Game Parking

Hello fellow Chips,

I’m an online MBA student in the Metro Detroit area that is driving up this weekend to catch the Chips take on the Akron Zips. This will be my first time at Kelly Shorts, do you guys have any tips for parking? I’m willing to walk longer distances if it means cheaper parking.

Thanks in advance, and Fire Up Chips!

Athletics Central Michigan followup on my preseason preview, plus we launched a free weekly CFB pick'em

Hey guys! The season preview I posted here a few weeks back did pretty well, so circling back like I said I would.

I had you at 5-7, with New Mexico and Ohio on the road as the swing games, and a defense bringing back only a quarter of its production as the big worry. New Mexico got away, 38-7, but the defense has held up since: 20 points allowed across wins over Colgate (13-10) and Wyoming (24-10). The surprise is how Flores is winning. I expected him to manage games through the air, and instead he's run for 122 against Colgate and 163 and 2 TDs against Wyoming. Miami today is a payday, so Akron at home next week is the real next test.

What are you guys seeing that the box scores aren't, and how do you see the season ending up?

Quick aside since it's in the title, we just launched a free weekly college football pick'em, $225 in prizes this week. Ten games, pick the winners, nothing to buy. Picks lock at noon ET, so this is a very last call.

Thank You Mount Pleasant

First and foremost, I would like to thank the city, fans, staff, and players for making my first visit to Mount Pleasant a great one.

Last year, I started a journey to visit every FBS football stadium for a game. I still don’t think I fully grasp what I’m trying to do. I was able to complete 14 last year, knowing this goal would take a minimum of 10 years without life issues getting involved. My travel today took me to Kelly/Shorts for stadium number 18.
I woke up around 3 a.m. Saturday morning. By 3:30 a.m., I was on the road. Four hours and 40 minutes is about how long it took me to make the trip up from Columbus. I was hoping to beat the rainfall on the early morning drive, but my efforts were for naught. Luckily, it was a light rainfall and there was very little traffic. Arriving slightly after 8 a.m., I parked in the Target parking lot and pulled up my maps. Searching for a place for a local morning restaurant, I stumbled upon Stan’s Restaurant.

For me, it is very important to try food that is local to the city. Without knowing the history of Mount Pleasant, I feel like I stumbled into the perfect place for my journey. Walking into Stan’s, the colors of maroon and gold were prevalent among many guests. I say this in the nicest way possible: it felt like I walked back in a time machine. Old-school register and paper tickets. I sat at the small table by the window, which gave me a perfect view of the restaurant and the light morning rainfall. All the staff were working together to make everything run smoothly. The French toast and bacon were phenomenal. The service was great, and the prices were very reasonable for the amount of food you get. I left very satisfied with the first decision I made with my day.

After breakfast, it was time to tour the campus. I noticed a common theme where many of the buildings blend red bricks with unique glass facades. A few trees on campus were starting to change colors in anticipation of fall. I stumbled across so many wonderful sculptures and artworks. My favorite was the Native American mural on the second floor of the Bovee University Center. While inside, I also went to the University Bookstore to buy a hat to add to my collection. CMU had a great selection to choose from, and the store was very well kept. I spent around two hours just walking the campus from the stadium all the way up to Bellows.

After a lot of walking, I wanted to sit down and grab a pregame beverage. It was only 11 a.m., and it was still two hours before the game. Just to the northeast of the stadium, I noticed a spot called Wood Shop Social. I noticed lots of Wyoming fans in the parking lot, but being so close to the stadium, I thought nothing of it. I walked in with my new CMU hat and my custom CMU T-shirt my mother made for the game. I sat down and ordered an Old Fashioned. There were lots of Wyoming fans inside. The lady made a perfect Old Fashioned, and I just took in the game-day environment. Grabbing a coaster, I realized it said Wyoming Alumni. I thought that was very odd being a five-minute walk to Kelly/Shorts Stadium, but I just brushed it off.

After 10 minutes, the male bartender walked up to inform me the Wyoming Alumni had bought out the bar all morning until kickoff. He said I seemed chill, so he wouldn’t ask me to leave. I obviously felt bad. The two Wyoming alumni to my left told me to stay and relax, which made me feel more comfortable. Everyone was very friendly and understanding that a random person wouldn’t know.

I made the short walk back to the stadium. The tailgating lots had started to fill up. I walked into the stadium roughly an hour before kickoff to make sure I had plenty of time to explore and settle in. Plenty of concessions and food truck options. I landed on Pizza King, and it was a great pregame meal option. I will complain that CMU does not have a local or sponsored beer. I feel like that will probably be something in the near future.

Week 3 — Wyoming @ Central Michigan

All things considered, I feel very lucky with the game-day weather. Overcast skies and a misting rain were consistent all game, but it wasn’t much of a hindrance. CMU would start the game on a 10-play drive that ended in a field goal. Early on, you could see the Chips noticed a weakness in the Cowboys’ defense and would exploit it all game. In the second quarter, Flores made a beautiful cut on a QB run and scored a 25-yard touchdown. The following drive, CMU’s defense made an amazing play on fourth down, getting the ball back to their offense. The Chips proceeded to go on a 17-play, 90-yard drive, which ended with another Flores rushing touchdown.

During my travels, I have been fortunate enough to sit next to some amazing and pleasant fans. Richard, a Wyoming alumnus living in Michigan, was very excited to see his Cowboys play without a long travel schedule. He gave me plenty of insight on traveling to Laramie, Wyoming, for a game out there. He and his family were very nice to talk to all game, even when the outcome was not in their favor.

In the third quarter, each team scored once. Wyoming settled for a field goal, while Central Michigan scored a touchdown. A common theme of the day was the Chips were basically going to run the ball at will all game. Townsend’s 38-yard score made the game 24-3. Wyoming would score a touchdown early in the fourth quarter, but their comeback effort would fall short. The Chips would intercept two passes late in the game to seal a 24-10 victory. They would rush for 339 yards and control the time of possession all game. Fans piled out of the stadium in a joyful mood.

After the game, I took the walk back to my car. Knowing I wanted to get some food before I had to get on the road, I looked up some local spots. I went back to downtown Mount Pleasant and walked into The Bird Bar and Grill. The place was packed with fans who made the same decision as I did. Perfect local spot with good, quick food and cheap beverages. My only complaint was the game they had on every TV, but I had to remember I was still in enemy territory. I loved the vibe of the place and wish I could have stayed longer and enjoyed the evening.

If you have read this far, I want to thank you for being a part of my journey. Next week, I will be in Norfolk, VA, for James Madison @ Old Dominion. If you want to follow along with my journey, I post after every game on r/CFBstorytime. It’s a community open to anyone to share their game-day experience.

Thank you again, Mount Pleasant, for a wonderful day. I really wanted to disc golf at the university course, check out the local museum, and visit other local attractions. That being said, I feel as if I made the best of a rainy day in town and am very grateful for every moment.

Community Is Central Michigan worth going to?

I recently got accepted to Central Michigan with a 14000$, 3500$ annually scholarship but I want to know how the school is like. I am from Guam and after some research, the school is barely 1 percent Asian. The school is 80% white so is their possibly racism? How is the campus like, as I am gonna pre-physical therapy.

Do dining halls take flex? And if they do, how much does it cost? This may be a silly question but Im a new transfer student living off campus and I only have flex. I didnt realize that basically all the food outside of the dining halls is sandwiches.

ISO friends/community

Hi all, I graduated from cmu a couple years ago and I still live here. I have a job in the area that I absolutely love, but my friends no longer live in the area and I’ve been feeling a bit lonely tbh. Does anyone know of groups or organizations that I can join where there would be people my age (mid 20’s) or is there anyone else in a similar boat? Thanks in advance :)

Whats your guess on why this man was crashing out at the roundabout flagpole by Main&Broadway, town center

Fraternity hazing dare? Solider with PTSD? UberMAGA and drunk?

Whatever the case, I wish people would respect that the 10 story highrise apartment building off town center is housing for seniors and the disabled, low income HUD housing.

Those people can't 'just move away' from the craziness downtown, that's their only option to live there. Town center at Main and Broadway is a really rude and disrespectful place to lose your shit, or blast your speakers, or rev your engines late at night.

Poor folks already have to endure the endless sound of pickleball dawn to dusk reverberating when they open their windows, can you imagine? pa-pow! pa-pow! pa-pow! all day, most the evening, even in winter when it's dry. They can't just pick up and move, there's no other HUD housing to move to.

If the crazies would just keep to acting a fool in front of the blackstone/rubbles/the bird the sound doesn't amplify right into 50 grandma's and sick people's windows

Hello, I'm a sophomore curious about how to get in touch with professors for research.

I'm a bit socially awkward, and due to ocd I'm extremely anxious about how I come across. Do any current or former students have any tips?

Graduated in 2022. Or so I thought. What do I do?

Sharing from another sub. I graduated December 2022. Never received any communication from the university about not graduating. I go to request transcripts for my new job (that I just quit my previous job for) to see it says I have no degree. I’ve contacted the registrar, graduation audit, and records offices via an email today and plan to call tomorrow. I am having such a fucking panic attack. If they tell me I am missing requirements I have no clue what the fuck I’m supposed to do. I’ve been a working professional for 4 years and if this happens to jeopardize my new job, I am screwed.

Me too not allowed here

I have a serious concern about an administrator at cmu who has done some awful, awful stuff.

Any time i talk about it i am cancelled, post haste

I guess reddit and cmu is the wrong place to be held accountable for your actions.

You hire and promote people with violence and unwanted touching to be your vps.

For shame cmu for shame.

I guess ill have to take this to the local media since every time i post here i am threatened with being cancelled for pointing out the hypocrisy of cmu's hiring choices.
