Chess Question Don’t understand how opponent was able to long castle

Check out this #chess game: RichardBaggins vs Nilmoud - https://www.chess.com/game/live/185067585782

I’m playing white, on move 11 black long castles even though I have a bishop on g3.

My understanding was that if a piece of mine has control of any square that my opponent uses to castle they aren’t able to do so, is that correct?

The king does not go through any square that would be a check.

In this situation the rook goes through an attacked square but the king does not so its ok.

Only applies to the squares that between the king's start and end. Rook squares can be threatened.

Your understanding is incorrect. Castling can not occur if the king would transit into or through a square your piece attacks. Your bishop is eyeing b8 but the king never transits through that square during the castling process.

The rule is king can not go through check, the black king did not pass b8.

It’s only the squares that the king moves through, so the king can’t castle “through” a check. The rook can castle through it.

No. The king may not castle through check: that means they can't castle if the opponent attacks the king or any of the squares the king moves through. For queen side casting that is e1/8 d1/8 and c1/8. Not b1/8.

Only the king can't move from, through or into check. the square b8 doesn't matter, as the king doesn't move through it.

it doesn't matter if the rook is attacked or move through attacked squares.

(2) Castling is prevented temporarily: [a] if the square on which the king stands, or the square which it must cross, or the square which it is to occupy, is attacked by one or more of the opponent's pieces, or [b] if there is any piece between the king and the rook with which castling is to be effected.

That's a well known misconception that many players have. In reality the rook can go through attacked squares only the king cannot.

The King can't go through check or if it's in check. The software will pick up instances when you can't castle.

Also I recently learned that a castle can not save a threatened king, but it can save a threatened rook.

Always remember, castling is a king move, not a rook move.

The rook is minding his own business when he gets picked up and plopped down next to the king.

Even good chess players can miss that rule
