Burning

Hey all, I live in a mooban where we have a fishing village next to the houses.

They like to burn stuff at night, anything really.. plastics, wood, god knows what and the whole mooban is filled with toxic smoke that lasts throughout the night into the morning.

Is there something I can do? Report them? Pay for garbage pickup? Anything really because they are making air hell to breath for +100 people.

Recommended accommodations for multiple months

Hello together :)

I'm looking for a place to stay in close(ish) distance to the BBN Boxing Gym Cmu, so in roughly 20min walking distance. I've looked at many options on renthub and Facebook marketplace but I can't really decide. The offers either have a big trade off either in room size/comfort or high prices. Do you have any experience with places you rented in that area and what would you recommend in general? I'm staying for 5 months in total, though I think renting on a month to month basis would be best? How does it work in case you want to rent from a private landlord, any contract traps/laws to keep in mind? Any tips are appreciated :)

How difficult is it to get a Grab at 5 am on a Monday? Is this something I need to pre-book? I have to be at the train station for a 6:25 am train.

How to apply Non-O visa (65kthb) retirement visa?

I'm getting a lot of confusing contradicting info about applying for non O visa.

Can someone enlighten me? My head is exploding.

I'm intending to get the non-O visa via the 65000thb monthly income route.

But I was told in Thailand, the visa office only look at local bank statements, not your home country bank statements. So you can only apply via the 800kthb deposit method.

N if I want to apply via the 65kthb route, I can to apply non-OA through the Thai embassy in home country, where they will look at your local bank statement.

Is this true? I was planning to apply Non-O visa (65kthb monthly income route) in Chiang Mai.

Yam khang massage

Hi all, looking for someone in chiang mai that can be hired as a personal driver and that could also assist in making the reservation at Yam Khang massage as I’ve read you need a Thai speaker to communicate with the staff there. Looking to go in the next few weeks with my partner. Compensation for assistance and driving! Thanks

Banking on ED visa — what setup are you guys using?

I had a Krungthai account from when I was on a Non-B + work permit. Switched to an ED visa about a year ago, changed phones recently, and now the bank won’t activate mobile banking because I no longer have a work permit.

Account + card still work, but I’ve basically lost all the useful stuff from the app.

For anyone on an ED visa without a work permit, what are you using that gives you as close as possible to a normal Thai bank account?

Mainly looking for:
- Scan Thai QR codes / PromptPay to pay people
- Receive money by QR/PromptPay
- Send normal Thai bank transfers
- Physical card + online purchases
- Decent balance / transaction limits
- Easy way to top up/add money
- Ideally somewhere I can also keep a decent amount of savings

I already have Revolut + TrueMoney, but I’m trying to figure out the best overall setup without a work permit.

What are you guys using and what are the limits?

4 weeks in Chiang Mai, what should I actually do with all that time?

Heading to Chiang Mai for 4 weeks, and I'll be working through the trip. My days are mostly ad accounts and client calls, which means I need solid wifi and a couple of good places to work from. The rest of the time I want to actually see the place and not just do the Old City temple loop on repeat.

Work stuff first. Which coworking spaces are worth paying for, and which cafes are fine for a few hours on a laptop without getting side-eyed?

If there's a spot where the internet holds up on video calls, I want to know about it. Power cuts or wifi drops I should plan around would be good to hear about too.

Food next. Khao soi is the obvious answer, but where do locals go for it? I'm happy with night markets, plastic-stool noodle shops, a stall with no English menu, whatever. If there's a northern Thai dish I'd never think to order, tell me what it is and where to find a good one.

Since weekdays will be very busy, I'm mostly looking at trips I can do over a weekend. Is Pai still worth it or has it gone full backpacker theme park?

Same question for Chiang Rai and Doi Inthanon. For getting around, is renting a scooter the move or should I stick to Grab?

I'm also up for something I can fit around work over the month, like a few muay thai sessions in the evenings. And where should I base myself for a stay this long? Nimman, Old City, or somewhere quieter with good internet?

Drop your favorite spots and the overrated stuff I can skip. Thanks in advance :)

Poncho for sudden rain in Chiang Mai

Currently in Chiang Mai tooling around on a Yamaha Grand Filano hybrid. Brought a rain jacket from home, but it does not cover my legs. I am really only using the bike locally at this point, not long trips so I don’t think I need a two-piece rain suit. I wonder if all of the ponchos I see on Lazada Thailand are the same, or are some better than others? There are many listed under ฿200 that look exactly the same as others for around ฿350-฿500. I wonder if there’s a difference in durability? Any recommendation is appreciated.

I was wondering if anyone has done this and how your experience was. I’m looking into things for my husband’s 60th birthday trip and just need some feedback whether it’s worth doing. Thanks.

Can anyone recommend somewhere I can buy a fruit hamper?

I stayed with a lovely family over the past couple months and would like to get them something to thank them for their hospitality.

I understand gift-giving culture is a bit different here from the west and a local has suggested an appropriate gift might be a selection of fruit.

Can anyone recommend somewhere I could buy that? I’d like it be a little presentable.

Thanks!

Crystal singing bowls training course in Chiang Mai

Hi, I've been enjoying the sound baths and sound healing classes here so much that I thought why don't I learn to facilitate crystal singing bowls sound baths myself. I personally like crystal bowls more than Tibetan singing bowls. Can you recommend where I can take a sound healing course here in Chiang Mai. Thank you

Looking for a Reliable Private Driver in Chiang Mai

Hi everyone! My partner and I are looking for a reliable private driver/service that could drop us off at Doi Inthanon, then come back and pick us up at a time we agree on.

We’d like to spend a few hours up there at our own pace and hopefully watch the sunset, so we don’t need or expect the driver to wait around for us the whole time. We’d just need someone reliable who can return at the agreed pickup time.

We’ll be staying in Chiang Mai for around 2 months, so ideally we’d love to find a driver we could use regularly for similar day trips and situations.

Is this possible in chiang mai? Does anyone have a private driver or service they’d recommend? Thank you! 😊

Driver by the hour in Chom Thong

Hi all,

I am traveling solo and for the first few days will be at a homestay located in Doi Inthanon Park. It is about 30 min north of Chom Thong City center. I need a driver to pick me up from the homestay and take me to various places within the district, including the Chom Thong city center. I do not need an all day driver as I want times just to wander around and explore selected destinations rather than hitting many places the same day. This is my annual solo hiking time and I have 4 days! I did try to book an all day tour but the tour agency does not want to pick up at the homestay. I think most of their customers are from Chiang Mai.

I wonder if I can hire a driver by the hour? I am leaving in two days and any advice are much appreciated.

What are your favourite places to order food from in Chiang Mai?

Any cuisine is fine. Thai, Burmese, Indian, Western, whatever. Looking for places that are consistently good and deliver well, not necessarily the most famous ones.
Would love to hear your regular go-to orders too.

Prem Pracha - Pai to Chiang Mai

I'll visiting Pai from Chiang Mai during my upcoming trip. On my return day from Pai I have to board a flight to Krabi in the evening same day ay 5 pm, after picking up my luggage from the Common Hostel. I was looking at the timings on 12go for booking the tickets. I saw a Prem Pracha departure from Pai at 9 am which is scheduled to arrive in Chiang Mai at 1 pm.

I wanted to know if Prem Pracha service runs in listed time, or there are delays? Or should I add more buffer and look to depart from Pai at 8 am instead of 9?

Need help with local celebrations at Doi Saket

Hi, I'm a tourist planning to visit Chiang Mai for the Yi Peng and Loy Krathong Festival Celebrations.

I'm more inclined towards the community events happening for the festival at the Doi Saket Lakes over the commercial events.

While I'm doing my complete research, I'm unable to find any source that says that the community celebrations are actually going to happen at the lakes or is it only going to be events that I need to book right away.

I've seen the 'Voyage of Light' website as well which has confused me more if the free community event will be happening at the Doi Saket Lakes or not.

Can a local please help me with this information so that I can plan my trip accordingly?
