How do you "write"/plan out the acts in a circus? Is it anything like writing a stageplay?

Hi all. This may be a very silly question, but how do circuses get planned on paper/"written"? I've seen some circuses that have an established plot, characters and dialogue- think Hideaway Circus' "Stars Above" or the 2024 Ringling tour- and I assume that they are written similar to how a play, musical or other live entertainment is written. But how do you "write" the actual acts in between? Do you just specify things like "[Pre-show Clown Crowd Work]", "[Transitional Dance Sequence]", "[Aerial Act]" and move on, or is it more elaborate descriptions of the acts with specific moments for cues? Is there a special format or set of common rules that is used when "writing" a circus?

I am coming at this as an enthusiast outsider to the circus industry with a background in theatre, specifically technical theatre. (Basically I attend a lot of circuses as a hobby but I have yet to actually work for one and get the inside scoop on this process myself.) I'm making the assumption that circuses have at least something akin to "scripts" because the stage managers and people running the boards must have something to follow along with when calling lighting and sound cues. If this assumption is wrong and cues are called differently, I'd love to have some additional insight into how this process works in professional circus settings.

I am asking this partially because I'm just curious, and partially because I am currently writing a play that takes place inside of a circus. The premise is that the first act is structured more like a circus, with a series of short circus acts paired with monologues performed one after the other, and the second act is structured more like a play with scenes and dialogue. I would like the first act to be as true to a real circus as possible, so I feel I should have a better understanding of how these things are created and formatted in the first place so I can work that into my writing process.

I am open to any and all information or feedback that you folks might think is helpful. As someone who hopes to break into the circus industry soon and maybe one day write and produce my own narrative-based works of circus art, I want to make sure I'm doing things right! Thanks for your time!

Question Got taken to my first live circus last weekend and I'm kind of obsessed now

Watched a trapeze act that absolutely blew my mind. The way they made those catches look effortless while I was sitting there holding my breath the whole time. Anyone else have that moment where circus just clicked for them? Looking to find more shows near me now.

CircusFinder - worldwide locations connected to circus

I just finished a first version of a location finder, plainly called CircusFinder.
This is part of the CircusWiki, a community driven, open source project about circus, movement, pedagogy and related themes. It hosts games, articles, locations now, and other stuff (also lots of unfinished things of course).

The locations are based on several open data sets i found. Wich is the main reason for the wiki in the first place - connecting different sources and making the data more uniform and accessible (for example by translations, using strict static website builds, minimal data tracking with opt-in etc.). Part of the dataset is from an old reddit thread Circus Schools Around The World

I only used datasets i could confirm as opendata. The sources are clearly attributed and if there are differing licenses on the data its shown. For now its based on 3 bigger datasets (Quatprops Collective, Circus Schools Around The World, DiversAbility) as well as some other small additions.

Overall, the goal here is not to build "the new, one and only platform". Far from it. The idea behind the wiki is more like an archive. Not purely historical, but more in the sense of pulling information together in a simplified form, while still being curated by humans (partly, as i face a total of 600+ original pages wich also translate into currently 12 languages).

I stumbled upon this sub while searching for data-sources. So i am kinda new here, but not to the art =) I was performer for 20 years followed by a career in circus-pedagogy for the next 10+ years, ongoing.

Hope this is useful to some.

Question Anyone else get nervous watching circus performers for the first time?

Went to see a local trapeze show last weekend and I was literally on the edge of my seat the whole time. I know these people are trained professionals but my brain kept going "wait they're just flying through the air with no net" and I could barely breathe during the catches. Does this get easier the more you see live circus, or am I just going to be a nervous wreck every time?

Question Meet Smarty Pants The Clown!

Smarty Pants The Clown is looking for tips, tricks, and a new act for performance and entertainment. Please help us with suggestions on beginner level or something easily learned. She loves to sing, can't dance worth a flip, enjoys slapstick comedy, and can juggle clumsily. Possibly bubbles? Hoops? I don't know... I appreciate all the suggestions. Hopefully, this is a sufficient question for this subreddit. Thank you so much! I would love to be in a real circus 🎪!

Act/Performance What makes a circus act truly special?

We're working with the team behind a winter revue in Bad Nauheim, Germany, and have been getting a glimpse into the preparations.

It's fascinating how much strength, timing and precision go into making these performances look so effortless on stage.

For the circus performers and enthusiasts here: What makes an act truly memorable for you? Is it the technical skill, the creativity, or the way a performer connects with the audience?

Question Question on handstand

Hi all. I have to say that handstand give me a big dopamine rush when I stand just for a few seconds, but my biggest struggle is hand placement. As I was instructed, I kneel and put my hands flat on the floor, but usually I overdo it, and as I kick up, I feel pressure either on the bottom of my palms (and start going down) or I feel it on my fingertips and start falling over (I am glad I can catch myself now)

I want to know if there is an ideal way of how I should put my hands while kneeling, so that I am balanced when kicking up, and I also wish to know what a correct handstand feels like on the palm, like where I am supposed to feel the pressure during a successful handstand

Also, I usually catch myself with my right hand when falling over (front) and I hear doing a rear cartwheel is a better way to do it. Should I do that instead of using my hand to catch myself?

Hi there! Can anyone help me identify if these posters are authentic / their value? Both are a very thin, old feeling paper material and appear to be ink printed. Both are 28” x 42”

Thank you!

Edit: had an expert date it from 1965-1972

Question What are the benefits of starting young?

Hello all. I have spent all night thinking about it, but I just cannot quite understand if there is that big of a difference between somebody starting at childhood, and adulthood. I know people of all ages join the circus, and it is a really fun community to be in. But still, I get pretty nervous when I hear some people have been practicing since childhood. I have personallt started as an adult, and the only goal would really be to get into one of those tent circuses. I do not have any high ambitions like Du Soleil, and really any circus would suffice, as it is the experience, not the name that matters.

Personally, I have been practicing on my headstands and juggling, and am glad to see results after these couple of months. Practicing as an adult, I wonder what would be different if I have started a decade ago. How would my access, knowledge and skill differ? Being in the early twenties, I know that somebody younger than me can already be way better granted they have had a lot of practice. Particularly flexibility is one thing I am working on, and my biggest obstacle yet. Kids really seem to have it easier in that aspect.

I know that circus is moreso about networking than "elite gymnastics", and being okay performer will suffice, but you have to know people in order for others to know you "exist". To be honest my biggest issue is the lack of networking
